I've been involved with digital audio since the late 80's. I've owned several pieces of M-Audio digital audio hardware over the years and they have always worked very reliably and sounded acceptably good in my digital audio workstation platform... there is always something better out there, but what is the price point? M-Audio products in my experience are a very good choice at a very reasonable price.

The M-Audio ProFire 2626 is no exception. This product has performed flawlessly right out of the box... no problems whatsoever. It sounds great. No pops, clicks or other nasty digital artifacts, just good relable operation and sound quality. I'm using the ProFire 2626 to fly digital audio channels via ADAT light pipe to and from a Soundcraft Spirit Digital 328 mixer and then into and out of a music studio DAW computer. The DAW computer is an ASUS M5A99X EVO motherboard/AMD Phenom II X6 1100T CPU/8 GB Ram G.Skill F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL/Windows 7 Professional 64 bit/ Steinberg Cubase 6 DAW software. I'm also using the analogue output channels on the ProFire 2626 as effects returns into the Spirit mixer. The analogue outputs sound very good, so it seems that the quality of the DAC's on these outputs are reasonably good. I've haven't tried using the analogue inputs on the ProFire yet as my studio uses a much higher end analogue/digital front end consisting of a good quality tube compressor into Mytek ADC's.

A word of caution... it is important to use the right Firewire IEEE 1394 interface card in your computer to connect to the ProFire 2626. I did my homework on this and found through my research that people have had good results with firewire digital audio using a SIIG 1394 3-port PCI Card Model NN-440012-S8. This is the one that I bought. It has worked perfectly with the ProFire 2626 and it is very reasonably priced. I suggest that you read what M-Audio says on this subject as you can read the ProFire 2626 user's manual from M-Audio's website. M-Audio is recommending Firewire cards that use a Texas Instruments chipset. The SIIG 1394 3-port PCI Card Model NN-440012-S8 uses a TI chipset.

I am extremely pleased with the M-Audio ProFire 2626 product.

Tried to use as expansion unit for M-Audio Project Mix I/O to add 8 more input channels as advertised for BOTH units. Right off, I capture at 92 kHz. If you can even get the unit to lock on at 92 kHz, only 4 of the inputs can be active, so you are paying for 8 and getting only 4. (M-Audio customer support verified this.) Installing exactly as instructed by M-Audio customer support, the unit would not lock on a sample rate of 96 kHz, and no sound would come through the 2626 into ProTools. Useless unit. M-Audio needs to not advertise this as an expansion unit for their own products because it will not work. Period.

Comments about M-Audio ProFire 2626 - FireWire Audio Interface:

Great interface, I read alot of people saying the built in mixer was confusing, not so, I literally just plugged it in and it worked with Pro Tools just fine, you never really need to mess with the built in mixer unless you are using two 2626s together or doing something beyond just recording. I noticed (though its probably a preference setting in protools or that we just need to actually use sends to make a headphone mix) that the headphone send level isn't very loud even when jacked up but raising the overall output level of the interface (i.e. the studio monitor level) raises the headphone level as well, again I think this is just something we need to setup in the DAW, not the interface itself.

Comments about M-Audio ProFire 2626 - FireWire Audio Interface:

If you are recording with Pro Tool, on a Mac Book Pro, and use a Glyph drive, this is for you! Yes, the ProFire2626 is a firewire interface, but you can not daisy chain with the interface in the middle of the computer and harddrive. The Glyph will create a low digital hum. You have you record to you computer, and then later transer the files to your Glyph when you are ready to back up or mix. This is a bit annoying. Also routing the signal to Pro Tools and getting around M-Audio's mix window will require some searching on Google. But once I got everything set up, I am very happy with the interface. But there is a lot of work to get it running. And you might also want to purchase a 400 to 800 fire wire cable.

Comments about M-Audio ProFire 2626 - FireWire Audio Interface:

For the most part the 2626 has been an upgrade over my old Digi 002. Midi connection was a little janky but it works. Some of the routing with the mixer can be a little confusing at first. Can't really comment on the preamps as I immediately hooked up an outboard preamp, but they seemed to have a reasonable amount of gain from the one time I plugged directly in. It's a little tweaky to set up at firts, but other than that it's been working solidly. Aside from the knobs it looks pretty cool too.

Comments about M-Audio ProFire 2626 - FireWire Audio Interface:

I just purchased the ProFire 2626. I run Windows 8 and there is no driver on their website. I called their help line and they were no help. On their website I was able to determine that the driver for Windows 7 works with Windows 8...so far so good. Before I purchased, I investigated many interfaces and wanted a rack mounted, firewire interface with 192 kHz sample rate. Based on my research this is the best for the price range; and B&H had it on sale to boot! Don't bother with the Live Lite software that it comes with...it is too complicated to use. I use Acoustica Mixcraft 6, very intuitive and again the best software in the price range. I have a pretty fast computer and was able to record acoustic guitar and vocals at the 192 kHz sample rate and it sounds absolutly awesome. Still lots to learn but I definitely recommend this unit.

I record some of the live music shows I mix FoH on. Often 24 tracks, and I generally use a Preonus StudioiLive direct to MacBook Pro. Sometimes I have smaller gigs without the sound system so got this for those. It does a fine job! I use it with Pro Tools 9. Good mic pres, sounds fine. My only surprise was that the line level inoputs are fixed level; the gain controls don't affect them. I missed that in reading the manual.

It is being discontinued, but for my present purposes it does a fine job for me!

Comments about M-Audio ProFire 2626 - FireWire Audio Interface:

I bought this to expand my home studio so I could record drums with higher quality and also be capable of recording a bands live performance. I was surprised with the high head room and the ability to push my levels hotter without sacrificing dynamics with over compression. I wasn't a huge fan of using it on vocals, but maybe I just need to play with it some more to find a sweet spot. The digital capabilities are awesome! Plenty of inputs for more devices and an extremely easy routing system. Low latency monitoring is a lifesaver for vocals (and pretty much everything else). Overall, I would recommend this to someone running a home studio or a small beginning studio.

Period.

Setup was easy to get going, although drivers for Windows 7 SP1 seem to be iffy. I am mainly using MAC, so it does not matter as much to me. Seems solid enough - I have it racked up so it should be fine.

I use the profire 2626 for V-Drums, mics, keys, and acoustic guitars. It works great in all areas. It's easy to setup, easy to use, portable, and the clarity rivals that of higher priced interfaces.

Comments about M-Audio ProFire 2626 - FireWire Audio Interface:

I use this product to connect my guitars and mics to my Mac Book Pro.

The interface comes with several cables, but I needed to purchase a 400 to 800 firewire cable to connect this to my laptop. The laptop only has an 800 firewire port and the 2626 has a 400 firewire. A simple cable or adapter is all you need to connect them.

I used to have a M-Audio Fast Track Pro. I purchased this because I needed to connect more than two instruments/mics at a time and I wanted a higher quality preamp.

The ProFire 2626 was a wonderful upgrade. The quality of the sound was noticeably better, the number of interfaces will let me grow my little home studio beyond anything I can foresee and the flexibility of the built-in mixer is awesome. I can freely connect and route my signals without limitations. I can get a huge sampling rate beyond anything I really need. The two headphone jacks are configurable within the built in mixer so I can route directly within the interface to the headphones for virtually zero latency, or I can route to each of them separately within my DAW, Apple Logic.

I am thrilled with this purchase and hope to keep this interface for several years.

Comments about M-Audio ProFire 2626 - FireWire Audio Interface:

I have two of these units, one hooked up to my laptop and one in my studio. I now am able to use one interface now with Pro Tools 9 and Sonar X1 as well as being albe to connect to my ADAT machines. In my studio, I have two Preamps that have ADAT outs, which I can connect to the ADAT "Ins" on the 2626 giving me 26 Simultaneous tract "Ins" & "Outs", something I have been in need of.

It was easy to install. I did have to go and get the updated drivers for Windows &, but they're right on the M-Audio web site. The routing options are a big plus, especially when patching in outboard gear.

One more BIG selling point was the price. B & H beat out everyone else, so after I bought my first one, I knew exactly where to go for my second.
