The Tamrac 5585 Expedition 5x Backpack (Black) is a medium size pack that offers foam-padded protection and quick access to multiple SLR cameras, lenses, flash, accessories and a 12" laptop computer. It is made from double coated, weatherproof 900 denier PolyTek fabric. The main compartment is completely foam padded with numerous adjustable, foam-padded dividers to protect digital or film SLR, 5-6 lenses, and a flash. The camera with a long zoom lens attached is suspended on two vertical, foam-padded dividers that are internally reinforced with rigid plastic. A restraint strap holds the lens firmly in place. Two Windowpane-Mesh pockets inside the front flap visibly organize filters, film and other accessories. A plastic, foam-padded platform in the bottom provides shock protection while a LockDown rain flap protects the zipper from the elements.
The 5585 QuickClip tripod attachment system is centered between the wing pockets, while the lower, plastic-reinforced Tripod Foot Pocket holds two of the tripod legs secure. It is carried by a carry handle or harness. Dual-Density Comfort Pads on the harness provide maximum carrying comfort while Air Flow Channels help keep the harness cool and dry during extended use. There is also an adjustable waist belt, expandable sternum strap for finer adjustments and "D" rings that accept an N-11 optional backpack camera strap. The backpack has M.A.S. (Modular Accessory System) attachment slots that allow you to add optional accessories and S.A.S. (Strap Accessory System) optional accessories that allow you to customize the bag. Four SpiderTabs that provides additional attachment points for expedition equipment or extra clothing.

Having just returned from a 2 week trip to Greece & Turkey, I want every photographer traveling with a camera to know this backpack camera bag is simply perfect!
I packed my new EOS 1DS Mk III, 16-28, 24-70, 70-200IS, 580EX flash, IR Transmitter, cable release, batteries, charger, 40 16GB extreme III compact flash cards, books, passports, Leitz tabletop tripod and ball head along with a whole bunch of AA batteries.
The bag easily fit in the overhead bin and was extremely easy to wear all day while out touring the sites. Being waterproof, it helped protect the gear during the occasional showers and best of all, going through security was a breeze.
This is the perfect sized bag for travel.
I highly recommend this one. It is very well made, well thought out and great to wear.

What a disappointment when I got this home and actually put something in it. I find this backpack to be extremely uncomfortable. Once I packed in all my gear and started to wear it, it almost instantly became uncomfortable. It puts a lot of strain on my neck and feels like it's yanking my shoulders back. My wife even commented how it didn't look like it was riding my back comfortably and I hadn't even voiced my concerns aloud yet. No matter the adjustment, I just can't get this bag to feel comfortable. My old, lower priced lowepro sling bag was packed to the brim with all my equipment and it still was more comfortable than this bag.
The inside of the bag is well done and it's very roomy for my t2i, 3 lenses and my flash. I also fit in my gorrila pods and Sony point and shoot camera and video camera easily. The outside compartments are hard to zip/unzip on my bag, I really have to fight with them to get them opened and closed. Also, I dont understand why on such a high priced bag, the outside compartments don't have velcro to close the little pockets for your memory cards and smaller items.
Also, the laptop compartment is poorly placed. Makes much more sense to have it closest to your back to not affect the natural curve of the bag.
I'm going to be returning the bag and choosing something else.

Comments about Tamrac 5585 Expedition 5x Backpack (Black):
I bought this pack to replace the discontinued LowePro backpacks I have been using for 7 years. I carry an assortment of lenses, 1 or 2 DSLR bodies, and an assortment of small items. This offers about the same amount of space as the Lowepro Trekker. Construction is equal to or better, and the shoulder straps on this bag are easier to get on and off stiff shoulders. In almost every way this is a good replacement. For the most part I'm happy. However, neither bag provided convenient pockets for batteries, memory cards, and especially filters. I thought the three pockets on the outside of this bag would be perfect. In actual use they are too stiff to open and close easily, and the pockets inside them are too small to hold filters. Because of the way these three pockets or outfitted they hold a lot less stuff than they should. In the end, they are a gimmick that has little real advantage and many disadvantages over a single, larger, exterior pocket.I'd still love to find a pack that is right for keeping these small items handy. I've resorted to the add-on pockets that Tamrac sells in the MAS attachment straps, but I always fear that this is a perfect way to lose a half dozen filters all at once. How about spots to put a few pens? We'll see. If those kidney shaped pockets are what has grabbed your attention, forget it.

Comments about Tamrac 5585 Expedition 5x Backpack (Black):
Overall the bag is great. You can TIGHTLY fit in two cameras and a couple lens etc. It is a good mix between the backpacks and other similar smaller ones that can only fit one camera and other gear.
BUUUUUT. The downfall is with a couple things. First they have no rain cover (which they have on cheaper bags, so it is kind of lame to buy a more expensive product and lose little things that add up. My BIGGEST gripe is with the "laptop slot". It is poorly designed by placing it in the front of the bag, and therefore lose a LOT of space. By being on the front, the natural curve design of the backpack causes the laptop slot to be very small. If they simply put the slot BEHIND the equipment (closest to your back when wearing), you would be able to fit a normal size laptop. With the 5x, i believe it is sized for a 12" laptop. VERY small and doesn't fit the average size laptop sold these days.
Inside the extra accessory pocket are just two large pockets. So instead of safely fitting accessories, you end up just having a "junk drawer" for loose stuff.
Otherwise, I love the bag. It's very durable and helps with your back problems from carrying gear all the time. Get this product or a similar one!

I must say that I have two other Tamrac camera bags and am very partial to the sturdy and professional design of the Tamrac bags. I knew the bag would be top quality, but I was not too sure about how my equipment would fit.
Pleasantly surprised, very roomy for body w/lens, multiple exta lenses, flash, etc. side compartments are great for storing small items (memory cards, cords, batteries, etc.) The laptop portion of the bag is on the outside of the bag, which I prefer compared to other models which have the laptop riding close to the wearer's back... I think this would put a bit too much strain/pressure on the laptop and potentially damage it. The laptop on the outside is easy to store and access when needed. The zipper is a water-resistant type which has a rubber seal on it, wouldn't say waterproof as it does have a small crack which does not seall 100%, but in reality it cannot do so and still function as a zipper... to be water tight / water proof, the zipper would need to be similar to a scuba drysuit zipper.
I'd certainly recommend the bag. I thought it would be much bulkier than it is. It looks good, stores the equipment safely, and rides well on the back.
