I was used to having a 50mm lens on my K1000 so was looking for something equivalent to use with the Leica M8 i just bought. I had sticker shock when i started looking at the lenses available. (the M8 was "cheap" on an auction site) So i started looking at Zeiss and Voigtlander as possibly good entries into the Leica world.

After checking out Flickr shots using this lens it seemed to be be a really good performer so i dove in for 1/7th the price of an equivalent Leica-branded version.

I have taken beautiful hand-held photos in the dead of night, and full-on winter sunshine in the snow and have yet to find a fault with the lens. You don't have to mess around with frame lines in the viewfinder since the default ones match the 35mm, it is bayonet-mount so you don't need an adapter, and it is crazy fast, making it a lens you could probably glue to the M8 body.

Buy this lens! It is really compact, beautifully made, shoots beautiful photos, and is cheap in the world of Leica. I don't see any other lens offered by B+H that offers the versatility and value that this 35mm Voigtlander does, for the M8.

      Great:

Not too many choices for fast primes on m4/3, especially something that's small and compact.

The CV 35/1.4 is very compact for the speed, and performs reasonably well for the price.

      Not so great:

m4/3 is very hard on its lenses, and any optical performance issues really show.

Like the 40/1.4 Nokton, the bokeh can be a rough and edgy wide-open to about f/2.5

Longitudinal CA and purple/green fringing at out-of-focus transitions are fairly apparent wide-open to about f/2.5

Corners not very good until about f/2.8-4 or so, and never really become tack-sharp (although this is not uncommon with most adapted lenses on m4/3)

Bottom line: there's not too many choices out there for m4/3. If you want a fast, compact prime, this is one of the few choices. Keep in mind its limitations wide-open (it won't give you the flawless performance at any aperture that you're used to with 4/3 lenses), and you have a neat tool that is useful in the right situations.

If you don't mind going to a slightly bigger lens, i think the Zeiss Biogon ZM 35/2 might be a better choice: it's not quite as fast as the CV 35/1.4, but would likely be a better performer at every aperture.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35mm f/1.4 Manual Focus M Mount Lens - Black:

When I shot film, I mostly used a Nikon FM2 with a 50mm f/1.8 lens. That lens was pretty sharp stopped down, but I really liked the soft-ish way it rendered wide-open. Having made the switch to digital years ago, I've never been able to replicate that rendering... until now. Most lenses these days are too technically flawless. For many applications that's fine, but not always.Wide open, this lens is just sharp enough in the center, and the f/1.4 max aperture has the ability to create excellent subject/background seperation. The bokeh characteristics when shot wide-open may not be to everyone's taste, but I really like it. Also, there's minimal - but still noticeable - chromatic aberration along high contrast transitions at full aperture, but as long as you know that, it's avoidable - and it's correctible anyway.Stopping down a little changes things completely. By f/2.8, chromatic aberration goes away and it's as sharp as anything Sony makes (I use this with E-mount cameras, via adapter) and even better at f/4 through f/8, after which diffraction sets in.I've included two sample images. Although their resolution is significantly reduced, they'll still give you a good idea how this lens performs. Both are shot on a Sony NEX-6 with a VM-E Close Focus adapter. The portrait of the girl was shot at f/2.8 at ISO 800, while the photo of the two girls by the cornstalks was shot with a 3-stop ND filter at f/1.4 at ISO 100.

For me, I will give a 5 Starts for this lens.
It's not sharp when full open, and even not sharp in edge when adapting on a digital camera. But it's compact and well build, and it also provide excellent pictures.
Check it if you need a compact 35/1.4.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35mm f/1.4 Manual Focus M Mount Lens - Black:

I've been using a Leica M8 for some years. The 35mm so far is my favorite for street fotography.
I was excited about this very fast lens for the price. So decided to give it a chance.
It's very well built, durable, nice bokeh, not as sharp as a Leica or Zeiss.
But the thing that bothers me is the magenta aberration more than usual. All photos taken with a background source of light look as they have a silky magenta layer on, which is understandable because of the lack of an ir filter of the m8. But it looks worse then any other lens I used.
But if you're keen to shoot monochrome photos. This accessible lens + m8 would be good friends.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35mm f/1.4 Manual Focus M Mount Lens - Black:

I use the Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4 Nokton Classic MC on my Fuji X-E1 and my Leica M4-2. It works perfectly on both (with an M-mount adapter for the Fuji). It's sharp in the center at f/2.8, and from f/4 to f/16 it is quite sharp – perfectly usable as a general-purpose lens. Contrast and color rendition are excellent. The build quality and feel are absolutely superb, as is the Voigtlander LH-6 lens hood. I think it's useful to think of the Nokton as an f/2.8 lens that has the capability to shoot at wider apertures if necessary, or if you want to create a dreamy looking soft-focus effect. If you want an M-mount 35mm f/1.4 that is truly sharp at f/1.4, you'll have to save up for the Leica ASPH lens (or opt for Fuji's excellent 35mm f/1.4 if you are using an X-E1 or X-Pro1). The barrel distortion that others have observed in the Nokton is definitely there, though it isn't really an issue unless you're shooting architecture. Finally, one thing the Nokton does really well is make beautiful photographs with a distinctive look. You'll either like the look of the "classic" flaws in the optical system or you won't, but at this price it is definitely a lens worth a try.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35mm f/1.4 Manual Focus M Mount Lens - Black:

I use this on a Leica body, and I find the barrel distortion unacceptable for a prime lens. It is worse than some of my 60 year-old Russian Zeiss copies. Also the light fall-off (vignetting) in the corners is absolutely above average in faster stops. As long as you are shooting people and busy scenes, you are good to go, but as soon as you try to set straight frames for architectural shots you get very disappointed.

Though, the optics are modern, and have a very neutral color rendition, maybe a little bit on the cool side of the spectrum (MC Version). It has a reverse-gaussian bokeh, which is not considered as the best of the class, but still it can be nice and classic-looking. What I particularly like about it is the compactness, build quality and smooth functioning. The focus ring is a joy to play with!

        Other issues are:

Back-focusing at average distances while right on at minimum and infinity.

People say the image is soft at f/1.4. They are right, but keep in mind that the lens is in general quite sharp, so the softness at 1.4 does not make the lens unusable. Depending on your preferences it may make it even more suitable for photographing people.

I emphasize again that the color rendering is very nice for a lens at this price point. You may want to stop it down to f/2 to get rid of some of its distortions, though. If you want to use it on a crop-sensor digital body (M8, M43, APS-C, etc...), probably you won't suffer from barrel and vignette effects as much as I do.

Love this lens! I bought it through B&H and the help I received was awsome! Heard alot of good things about B&H and I was not dissappointed. Regarding the lens... I've done my homework and read alot of good and alot of bad. I was able to filter the bad down to people going cheap on their adapters or not setting the camera correctly for the lens focal length. For me I went with the Voigtlander MFT adapter - built oh so solid! and also if you don't set the image stabilization for the proper focal length, your images most definitley will not be as crisp as they can be - i must admit i forget to change it in the camera settings sometimes when I switch lenses and boy am I not happy with myself! Overall! solid lens and beautiful pics!

I was searching for a decent "pancake" lens for my NEX-7 and I've always liked my other Voigtlander lenses, and this one fits my street shooting habits like a glove. Takes getting used to the focus/aperture rings but makes for fast focus and shooting and I've been very pleased with the capabilities of this tiny prime lens. Another classic Voigtlander lens for my bag!

I use it on my Leica M2 and was hoping to find something very useful, being a 35mm and ƒ/1.4.

The lens that I have used the most on my Leica is a Jupiter 3, Sonnar replica
that you can get for about $200 online.

I was hoping that the Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4 would be at least as good as
that very cheap Sonnar replica that I´v got but how wrong I was!!

Vignetts alot under ƒ/4 - Sonnar replica has no vignett @ƒ/1.5!

This was recommended to me to try out on an M8 (roughly 50mm pov). I was surprised how sharp it is even at 1.4 and how niice the bokeh was (some claim it can be harsh). However i did end up returning the lens due fo severe back focus. I tried another and it wasnt as bad but did not end keeping that one either. Had the focus been more accurate it would have been a great lens. Perhaps the copy you get will be better. I only gave it 3 stars due to the inconsistency for IQ i would give it 5.

I recently switched up my kit to a Sony NEX 5N. This one of the rangefinder lenses I bought and I absolutely love it. The stills coming out of the lens are gorgeous, incredibly sharp and gives classic bokeh. Using the lens for movies is also a treat. The focusing ring is so smooth and makes it really easy to pull focus. The lightness is just the icing on the cake.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35mm f/1.4 Manual Focus M Mount Lens - Black:

I use this lens with a Sony NEX 5n, and it's on my camera 90% of the time. I only swap to my 50mm only every so often, as this lens is more versatile for taking scenery and people shots.

In good light and wide open (like during the day) the lens is a tad soft with noticeable CA, but once it's stopped down to 2.8, it's quite nice and sharp. It definitely proves its worth in low light as it works quite well even at 1.4, and somehow with almost none of the CA visible in bright light.

The lens doesn't give the straightest lines near the edges, but that's a concern only if you are extremely fussy about such things. The only other major gripe (which I got over eventually) is that you can't get up close to smaller subjects (I take lots of pictures of my cats) due to the 70cm minimum focusing distance. But that's definitely a compromise that I can live with (and that's also what my Pentax 50mm 1.4 is for!)

In terms of aesthetics, it's very tiny and compact on my 5n, and people are always impressed at how neat the entire package looks. I think this lens is definitely worth the price.

i bought this lens for my M8 and love it. i wanted a lens that would get me as close to 50mm as possible and this one does the trick. i am also so impressed with the fact that it takes in so much light. i took a three second shutter in low light with out a tripod and it looked great, and in focus. part great camera part great lens. only down side is finding filters for it but i shoot 100% b&w with this camera so filters won't be needed. also hats off to the team at B&H. i have bought a number of items from them and will continue to do so. i live on vancouver island in canada and there is nothing around here that matches them.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35mm f/1.4 Manual Focus M Mount Lens - Black:

I shoot a Nex-5N. The more I use the Nokton, the less I like it (although I still see it as a decent lens). I think with this lens you get what you pay for. It's image quality is noticeably inferior to my other Zeiss RF lenses (21mm f/2.8 & 50mm Sonnar). My biggest gripe with the lens in the quality of the bokeh; it's downright ugly and distracting. For me, 35mm on a crop sensor makes this a "single subject people shooter" which means I mostly shoot in the f/1.8-2.8 aperture range. So the noticeably nervous bokeh makes it hard for me to enjoy subject isolation in the shot. And when shooting at wide apertures, you do not get as much of a 3D effect compared to Zeiss lenses. The colors are also flatter compared to my Zeiss lenses which makes this lens slightly better suited for b&w photography. That said, the lens is a reasonable performer for its price point and also very portable. I can fit my Nex into my jacket pocket with this lens attached. If you can afford a fast Zeiss or Leica 35mm, I strongly recommend you skip buying this lens; otherwise this is a reasonable keeper until you can afford something better.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35mm f/1.4 Manual Focus M Mount Lens - Black:

I bought this lens for Nex 5N. It matches well the body style. Lens is sharp although manual focusing at wide open may prove challenging. The focus ring is a bit small and not easy to use with large hands. Feels pretty heavy.

Comments about Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35mm f/1.4 Manual Focus M Mount Lens - Black:

I use this on a Bessa, mostly for street photography. Love the creamy dreamy rendering wide open and it is sharp stopped-down. Great build quality. Fun to use. Haven't used on digital so can't comment.

Is it just me or do these old-style lens just look and feel better than modern lenses, which are big and cheap looking?

One thing I have found is that AF is over-rated on anything 35mm or less - I don't find speed of focus to be an issue - but I suppose it is a matter of skill and experience.

Nice lens in my favorite focal length.
