The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens from Canon is a compact and lightweight telephoto zoom lens that is specifically designed for EOS DSLR cameras that use the EF-S lens mount with APS-C sized sensor. Combining powerful performance with high image quality, this lens offers the 35mm focal length equivalence of 88-400mm and is ideal for photographers seeking an affordable, versatile autofocus lens for general-purpose telephoto photography.

The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens incorporates Canon's 4-stop compensation Image Stabilizer technology. This allows the use of shutter speeds up to four times slower with no perceptible increase in image blur. A panning detection feature automatically turns off the Image Stabilizer in either the horizontal or vertical direction when following moving subjects. An Ultra-low Dispersion lens element minimizes aberrations and contributes to overall sharp, high contrast imaging.

Image Stabilization
Image Stabilization extends low light options to previously unavailable levels. Handheld images taken in low light and at long focal lengths will benefit from the 4-stop shutter speed equivalence of the optical image stabilization system.
Superior Image Quality
One UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) lens element is used to suppress the effects of secondary chromatic aberrations - for crisp, sharp, high-contrast images without fringing throughout the zoom range.

I bought this lens over a year ago. People ask me about my photos all the time. I have even had people want to come shoot with me as a result of my photography. Once they see my lens and camera, they are really shocked that I have taken the photos I get with this lens. I cannot say enough about the clarity and detail I receive from this lens. It is cheap and not well made, but it does a fantastic job for the focal length and cost! I would recommend it to anyone that cannot afford an L-series lens. Greg Jowers

Positive first: It's a good lens, not just for shows and sports but also for an everyday use, if you like shooting telephoto.
It is not super fast, but usually also not slow at all, I use it on the T5i and the AF nails it pretty fast so don't worry about loosing too many pictures because of it.
As for the downside, besides the all-plastic built which feels a little like holding a toy, there is a real one major downside for this lens - and it is the Canon 55-250mm STM.
For extra 50$ the STM offers a quicker and INTERNAL focus. AT first I thought that it is not such a huge upgrade, but after using the IS II for an hour I realized that saving myself those 50$ was a huge mistake. Sure, the image quality and the optics are quite the same - but this lens rotates A LOT while focusing, which makes it NOISY, SLOW, and a pain in the neck if you are using a polarizing filter. At some points the lens mechanism also moves to far ahead in order to focus that it actually changes your framing a little.
So add the extra 50$ and buy yourself the 55-250mm STM, I wish I had, it's worth it.

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens:

I have owned this lens for several years now, and I am impressed! When you nail the focus on this lens the images are VERY sharp. You will end up with a little color fringing on specular highlights or heavily back lit subjects, but come on, for the $$$ it is an impressive piece of glass. Optically this lens is far beyond its price point; I really can't stress that point enough. The build quality isn't too bad either. Sure it feels a little plasticy, but I have never felt like it was going to let me down if the going got a little rough. Now the IS, this is the only lens I own that has IS. Canon claims something like four stops slower handholds than you can usually achieve, I think this claim is fairly accurate at 250mm. If you follow the "One over the focal length" rule for shutter speed, you end up with 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, 1/15. I have made usable images of still subjects at 1/15 to 1/20 while hand holding. Overall, this lens is a steal at the price B&H charges. Buy It

This lens is great! The zoom is great for more long-distance shooting. One thing to bear in mind, make sure to use a tri-pod, especially when zoomed in a lot. This is true for all cameras. The more zoomed in, the shakier any movement looks.

I use this lens for just about anything. Focuses well, image stabilization is a great help to someone whose hands shake a bit. The only thing I noticed that aren't so great is that the manual focus ring is a little stiff. It is improving with use, however.

I am new to the DSLR world...What was I waiting for?!? I've used this lens to shoot pics of the moon with a Rebel T3i (18MP?) and it produced a pretty clear picture upon cropping and I didn't even have it on a tripod. Seems to have good image stabilization. I haven't used the auto focus much at all to be able to comment on that functionality.

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens:

So far I have used this lens for some wild life photos. The additional zoom is a must have along with the kit lens in my opinion. If you plan on purchasing this lens to shoot video, I would recommend spending the additional money to get the STM version which offers much quieter auto focus. If this is not an issue save the money and get this one.

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens:

I'm a photography student so my knowledge in lenses is a little limiting right now. However I consulted with my professor before making this purchase. After using the lens I was very happy with it. The quality of the pictures I'm getting from it was definitely worth the buy. I do a lot of portraits for friends and have a really good range with this lens.

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens:

This is a great lens for the price. The image stabilization feature allows me to get good sharp images, and I love how lightweight it is. I did a side-by-side identical photo comparison test with my old lens (a 70-200mm off-brand), and the difference between the two was like night and day. The pictures with the old lens were so blurry they were unusable, but the photos taken with this lens were sharp. I wish I had bought it sooner!
