The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens is a compact and lightweight telephoto zoom lens that is specifically designed for the range of EOS digital SLR cameras that use the smaller EF-S lens mount. Combining powerful performance with high image quality, this lens offers the equivalent of 88-400mm in 35mm format, and is ideal for photographers seeking an affordable, versatile lens for general-purpose telephoto photography.
The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens incorporates Canon's 4-stop compensation Image Stabilizer technology. This allows the use of shutter speeds up to 4 times slower with no perceptible increase in image blur. Automatic panning detection automatically turns off the Image Stabilizer in either the horizontal or vertical direction when following moving subjects.
Note! Compatible with cameras that have APS-C size sensors

Let's get this straight. People who complain about Distortion and CA, get over it. With good software such as Lightroom or DXO, you have no need to worry. These all can be fixed. Honestly this lens isn't as bad as some that I've seen really. Also when you complain about this being not so good in Low Light? Know what you're buying and what it's purpose is. That being said. I'll be honest, the reason why I purchased this lens was because it cost an extra $ on top of the body purchase I was making. This lens is simply filling a void right now till I can replace another Super-Zoom lens I once had. Keep in mind, this is not an L-Class, but for the money it WILL give you great images if you know what you're doing. It's clean, not too soft at either end and will perform quite well for what it is intended for. Outdoor Daylight or a very still night time shot. I have no complaints about the lens, I owned one before and was quite happy with it. The build quality is better than expected, it doesn't feel quite cheap. So if you're looking for a really cheap zoom, go for it. I'm not going to list any CONS with this lens because it is only meant for one purpose and it does its job quite well.

I was looking for a lens to supplement the 18-55mm lens that came with my EOS Rebel T3i and with my tight budget, choices were limited. After a fair bit of research I plumped for The 55-250mm because it seemed to offer a reasonable compromise - good performance at an affordable price.
I have tried it in both auto and manual modes over distances ranging from about 2 meters (6' 6") to infinity and the results were more than adequate for my requirements. I'm sure more use will further improve the results.
Once or twice in the beginning I thought I felt a bit of hesitation when using auto focus, but it hasn't repeated that.
My only concern is the somewhat flimsy construction, but my last lens purchase was for a Canon AE-1 about 20 years ago, and things have changed since then so I might be treating it a little unfairly. With care I'm sure it will do what I ask of it and last the distance.
I would have given the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens for Digital SLRs three-and-a-half stars if I was able, as it deserves more than a three.

Comments about Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens for Digital SLR Cameras:
I am not surprised by the good image quality of the lens - but I am surprised by how good the IS is for such a focal length lens. I have a tamron 70-300 that is just phenomenal but the IS is kinda noisy, does the job, but noisy. But the IS in this lens, you can't even hear it.
Very nice, very nice indeed.

It's a inexpensive zoom lens. The quality is good. Of course you can always get a better one if you have the money. If you're just an amateur photographer, I suggest you get this but if you are printing out larger formats formats and its your job, get the higher models.
