For awhile now I've been looking for a high-tech bag that will suit my needs as far as hiking and shooting Landscape photography. After a year of searching for the perfect bag, I found the Tamrac Expedition 6x and 7x.

Initially I was torn apart between the two, being afraid that the 7x maybe a bit too big of a bag for my personal taste. I was trying to cut weight for hiking.

That all changed when I saw this product in person at a local Calumet Photo. between the 6x and the 7x, the 7x is BUILT for outdoor and long hikes. It has features found in camping backpacking packs such as Adjustable Upper Cinch Straps, Adjustable Waist Belt Stablizers, and Adjustable Hip Belt Positioning. All these were NOT found on the 6x which in physical dimensions were only roughly 2" narrower and 2" shorter. Having looked and compared both bags, 6x and 7x, the 7x really isn't that large. Maybe a bit larger than a students Jansport backpack.

Those features sold me. Aside from the shoulder straps being comfy AS HELL and the amount of high end features this bag does have already, I have to give this product a 4 star rating not because of the craftsmanship of this bag, but because of my physical body dimensions. I am 6'1" so the hip strap, like most photo backpacks, tends to come up a bit higher than my waist. I have adjusted it bit lower but its still just a hair off.

As far as load capacity, I'm able to stick in a 5D mark II with Battery Grip, 70-200L IS, 24mm 1.4L, 24-105L, 2-580EX II, Sekonic 756DR Light Meter, 2-Pocketwizards, Canon ST-E2, Accessories, and STILL have room for2-3 more L series lenses. Plus this pack must have been military inspired because You can add MORE storage with their M.A.S. accessories. The pack has 4 M.A.S. attachment spots on the sides for pouches or lens bags.

    Hope this helps.

Comments about Tamrac 5587 Expedition 7x Backpack (Black):

I use this bag to hold alot of gear and it is perfect for doing so. It is a tight fit with everything I have but holds its great. My only draw back (the reason for 4 stars instead of 5) is the tripod carrier. It is for itty bitty tripods. It does not strap my tripod completely, and forget putting the head on my tripod to lug around. Overly bulky looking. I have a Manfrotto 055PROB with a 410 junior geared head for reference. Other than that the bag is awesome.

Comments about Tamrac 5587 Expedition 7x Backpack (Black):

I wanted a bag to accommodate all my camera gear and laptop, I can put inside 5D3 with grip and 70-200mm f2.8L attached, Canon 24-70mm f2.8L, Canon 100mm f2.8L IS, Canon 16-35mm f4L IS, Canon 35mm f2 IS, Canon EF 2X III, filter case, 580 EX II and cords, batteries+charger, plenty of memory cards, tripod/monopod and laptop.
I know that there are many photographers that prefer to travel light or have much more gear but, for me it really serves the purpose. If you want to travel light this is not for you because it can get heavy due to much equipment, look somewhere else. I also have a small Lowepro backpack I use for short trips (with laptop) or photography 1-day and Tamron slingbag.

Comments about Tamrac 5587 Expedition 7x Backpack (Black):

You can't buy a backpack without trying it out, and the 7X fitted me perfectly - bigger bags were too heavy and smaller ones did not have the space. I was very happy with the bag until a zipper broke - disappointing after just a few months of light use, but these things happen. Then another zipper broke in exactly the same way - you pull on the pull-tag, and it breaks off in your hand, so you have to push the slider body with your finger to operate the zip. The bag was still useable, but not easily so, so I complained to Tamrac.
They replaced the bag immediately and without question - even though the bag was nearly two years old by this time.
Today, I kitted out my new bag for a trip tomorrow and guess what - the zipper pull-tag came off in my hand as I opened the bag. This is a brand new, empty bag where the zipper has been opened maybe five times in its life and has never had any strain on it.
This time, I found the broken piece on the floor in my house and examined it closely. It is a very poor quality casting from a porous metal that fractures easily.
I would like to think that my experience is an isolated incident and that Tamrac got a bad batch of zippers. Unlikely, though, given that my two bags are two years apart in age, so I must put this down to poor quality of components.
My equipment is way too valuable to house in poor quality packs, so I will be upgrading to Lowepro bags in future. This Tamrac is DEFINITELY not worthy of its "Expedition" title!

Comments about Tamrac 5587 Expedition 7x Backpack (Black):

The quality of the backpack is excellent but I would expect nothing less from Tamrac. I also purchased and attached a pair of medium size M.A.S. attachments, the large flash pouch and the large rain cover. I have a DSLR, 24-70mm f2.8 lens, 70-200mm f2.8 lens, 1.7x teleconverter, flash, remote control, batteries, several 77mm filters, tripod and other small items. With everything it ends up between 40 and 50 pounds. The first day I went out with it I had it on for 7 hours. I was very surprised how comfortable it was. I am about 5'9" and 185lb. When I took it off at the end of the day it was like I never had it on. I am used to using a large shoulder bag which for me is much easier to access equipment in when on the move. It's not so easy with the backpack which is what I expected but I bought it for travel and for that purpose I think it is a great product.

Instead of wasting your time by reading many pages of review I wanted to list what I have in this backpack:
        1. Very durable, water, or rain is no problem.
        2. I loaded with one 70-200mmm, 80-400mm, 85mm, 24-70mm, 16-35mmm, 105mm, flash 910, camera, and 50mm. All fit in this backpack.
        3. Three front pockets have plenty of room for batteries, memory cards, cleaning stuffs, phone.
        4. Three inside pockets with zip to fit my Lee graduated filters, polaroid, three ND filters, and one sunset filter.
        5. Side mounting tripod is easy to carry.
        6. An optional hanger for your water, accessories, etc.

Strongly recommended. B & H shipping and receiving was excellent.

I've carried this bag that was fully stocked with camera equipment, all day at the zoo, and through Joshua Tree (desert terrain), and it was very comfortable. I was able to carry it onto the plane, which is great for anyone who travels, but doesn't want to check their camera bag.
The only thing I would label as a 'con' would be that it took me a while to really get it adjusted to my body. I still don't think I have it 100% right, but it's already pretty awesome.

Great for air travel and documentary films or even just a day trip shooting photos. I fit 8 lenses with 2 cameras and accessories no problem. Great padding to protect lenses easy to adjust to fit the size for snug fitting.

Comments about Tamrac 5587 Expedition 7x Backpack (Black):

This product works as I imagined it would. This is an upgrade from the official Canon backpack. The construction is solid and there is plenty of room to store a decent amount of gear. Right now, my back is packed with two camera bodies, a 580ex flash with battery pack, 85mm, 18-55mm and 55-250mm lenses, sun sniper pro camera strap, batteries, memory cards, and a few small extras. I'd still be able to squeeze a couple more lenses in it with the exception of the 300+ mm L-series giants. They key feature here is how supportive the backpack is. The waist belt coupled with the lower back padding makes a huge difference. Carrying more gear in this bag with a tripod attached was much easier than with the Canon bag. Another nice feature are the MAS and SAS accessory systems. They allow you to carry extra gear without having to immediately upgrade to the next size. Tamrac gained me as a loyal customer with this great product!

Comments about Tamrac 5587 Expedition 7x Backpack (Black):

Since I just received it, I will in the future use this backpack all the time. I had a small one that was just not doing the job, I need something had would carry all my gear in one unit. I was carrying some lens in my pocket and my wife even carried some in her purse, now I can carry everything I need and have everything I need for any shot. It looks and feels like it is made of some very strong material and has so many pockets and places to put my equipment this will be a great asset for me. I just came back from a shot in Las Vegas and it was totally awesome, I should have purchased one earlier. At the present I can't think of anything bad to say about this backpack.

Whoever designed this thing, knows what is needed.
It has a huge array of pockets and compartments (velcro straps) that can be modified according to your needs. You can reconfigure to fit your equipment. Water proof, strong construction. Unbreakable. Expensive but for a reason. !!

Comments about Tamrac 5587 Expedition 7x Backpack (Black):

The backpack provides plenty of space and cushioning for camera and other gear and is very well built. At the same time, it is a large pack and somewhat awkward for frequent access. I will use it mainly for longer-distance transport and use a smaller pack for excursions. The strap and pad system is very comfortable. This is my third Tamrac bag purchase of different sizes and they all fulfill my needs well.

Comments about Tamrac 5587 Expedition 7x Backpack (Black):

This is a well-conceived product-- roomy, configurable, and a very comfortable harness. However, the thickness of the bag obviates its use as a carryon bag. At 13 inches (plus the thickness of the harness), it won't fit under most airline seats, and will only fit in the overhead compartments of larger jets. I think Tamrac could have shaved about 2" off the girth without sacrificing too much protection, and made it much more carryon-friendly.
