Essentially they cut the annoying ambiance in my office, as well as at any parties I spin at. And as far as sound quality of the music, a very wide range and very warm, thumping bass. These were a GREAT investment.
The only drawback is the little hinges just above the ear-cups. They're intended to allow the user to adjust the angle that the headphones are on your ear; just slightly behind, or infront. I see that as an un-necessary feature, and something I could see breaking down over time.

I read lots of reviews about these phones before I got them. They arrived today and I decided to AB them against some of my tracking phones I use in the studio. Got these because of the bass response, and yep they sure have a low bass response.

Checked them against Sennheiser HD250 II and HD280 pro on different material ranging from acoustic guitar/singer to heavy metal, and hip hop.

Ok the verdict is the bass response of these things is phenominal, I could literally feelthe bass popping out of my mouth. Compared to the sennheisers the DJ1200 are far more powerful in the bass department and beefier than most phones I've heard. But and it's a big BUT, they seriously lack the upper mids. Cymbals lack sizzle which I can easily hear in the Sennheisers. Acoustic guitar lacks the sweet highs which make it sing, vocals lack air which makes them come out of the mix. Also when you turn them up a little the bass becomes overwhelming and distorted, masking the mids and highs so all you hear is a mess of sound.

You're probably asking what sort of rubbish headphone amp did I use? I used a Benchmark DAC 1 D/A with benchmark headphone amp, one of the best mastering grade DACs around and it doesn't distort on anything else.

At reasonable listening levels the DJ1200s sound ok, definitely NOT a balanced sound, very low mid to bass heavy. But in saying that, Metal sounds awsome on them , and so does Hip hop and a lot of bass heavy electronic music, it's like being at a concert, you feel the bass as well as hearing it. This is where my other headphones lacked the low end and punch that the DJ1200s have in the bass, and they do have good punch down there.

If you want balanced monitor headphones for your mixes or you want hi-fi headphones to listen to a string quartet, then forget it, these phones just aren't for you, as they sound like you're listening through a curtain compared to hi-fi headphones.

All said and done they're pretty good for what they do and a useful addition to my headphone collection. If the bass on your mixes sounds bad and boomy, these puppies will let you hear that straight away, where other headphones fail, and that's why they're useful for me.

And if you want an awsome pair of phones for DJing, these would be my best bet, they kick bottom ;-) (sorry wasn't allowed to swear here) and sound just like you're listening to a huge stack of speakers in a big club, very beefy live sound!!.

The sound isolation is amazing though, I used them for tracking vocals and there is no spill into the mic from the playback track, I'd rate them highly in this area.

Also comfortble to wear, they're on-ear phones and not over the ear, so the cups are smaller than over the ear phones and sit on your ears, so some people might find them a little tight. But this gives them their sound isolation, and I like this feature. The actual pads are very thick and soft, so they are really comfortable for on ear phones, in fact more than any I've tried so far.

      Hope this helps you decide.

      Cheers

Comments about Technics RP-DJ1200A Professional DJ Headphones:

My 1st pair last 5 years of brutal professional dj use on 3 continents

These sound great in very loud environments such as nightclubs and festivals. The cup fits snugly round the ear to keep external sound out and ensure I don't need to raise the volume high enough that will damage my hearing.

I personally have used these headphones to DJ in front of numerous 1,000+ crowds.

        Strongly recommended

Comments about Technics RP-DJ1200A Professional DJ Headphones:

These are the best headphones I have ever owned, I love them more than my Pioneers or my Beats by DRE. I had my Technics RPJ-1200's (The all black headphones) for years until I stepped on the cord, which in the early models of the 1200 were unfortunately not coiled so I ruined one side of the sound. I later took that cord out and replaced it with a coiled version from radio shack upon which I fixed the sound on the second side. I'm glad they eventually made the 1200A's (silver)with the curled coil wire as that will keep that same problem from occurring in the newer headphones.

One user reviewed the headphones stating that he felt the rotating cup was a useless feature. I completely disagree with him, I actually loved that feature as most of the time I only use one side of the headphones when I DJ. I often turn one cup up higher on my head leaving one ear out to listen to the monitor. But obviously when using the headphones for personal music listening when I travel I want to be able to use both ear pieces and other times the sound at the clubs an be so loud that you need both cups to hear the headphones, so a single ear headphone is not the answer. The feature introduced here by Technics was the perfect answer. Technics did a great job with this design. The rotating joints should be a little thicker or made of a light aluminum for strength as it is a high stress point.

My own headphones certainly withstood a lot more play time with me than my Pioneer DJ1000 Headphones which had a stress damage break in the first 2 weeks. I had to return The first Pioneer's and got a new pair that I've had to tip toe around being very careful with ever since. My Technics headphones were much more sturdy and required less care than any other headphone with the exception of their original first generation frail cord.

These headphones are excellent for the price that I paid for them. They are sturdy, have a good high to mid frequency range, and the low end is just right for my taste. I will admit that the ear cushions aren't as big as I would have hoped, but that is something that can easily be overlooked.

Positive: light weight, adjustable earcups, noise cancell, sound quality.
Negative: it becomes just a little bit unconfortable when using for a long time non-stop, but it's not even a problem. I would recommend it.

I returned them for a full refund and purchase another brand.

I use these headphones professionally in high volume nightclubs around california with a rane mixer, they hold up in extreme spl environments without distortion. I enjoy using them, the only thing they dont do is flip all the way around, the driver only flips half way so you HAVE to have them on your head or around your neck... you also cannot remove the cord like on the lesser priced unit??

Comments about Technics RP-DJ1200A Professional DJ Headphones:

I use these headphones for DJing as well as regular listening.

I use thid headphones for my IPod, and it works great - the sound quality is fantastic and there is decent amount of noise cancellation built-in (not 100% though). Its a little bulky - so travelling with this can be a hassle.

I use this product to DJ
Pros: Great sounds, nice bass. Adjustable; you can lock on side on your ear to monitor, and the other you can swing the arm to the back of your ear for monitor usage. One thing, i really enjoy is how you put it on your ears, it blocks the sound from outside and others can't hear you either. It's not almost like noise cancelation.
Cons: The ear pieces are very tight, and it can get hot. I've used it for like 1-2 hours, it makes your ears sweat.
                                    Overall: it's great!!!!

yes these are the holy grail of headphones for the professional dj. these are the only headphones that swivel back behind your head for single ear monitoring.. i love these phones.. pretty durable.
although my old ones all black are on their way out..my old ones also did not have a coiled wire..
there are probably other improvements... i think there are japanese ones in camo color that i gotta have..
