Product Highlights
  • 650mm f/5 Newtonian Reflector
  • Motorized Equatorial Mount

For those who are looking for large aperture and light gathering capability, the answer may lie with the choice of the Celestron AstroMaster 130 EQ-MD newtonian reflector telescope. Its 5.1" diameter is considered excellent for light collection. When you are looking for faint sky objects such as clusters and nebulae, large aperture becomes relevant.

A 650mm f/5 aperture is considered really bright in optical terms, and offers a wide field of view. In order to take full advantage of the telescope's short focal length and wide field of view, the user may consider the purchase of a longer eyepiece than the standard 20mm for viewing galaxies.

The AstroMaster 130 EQ-MD features coated glass optics, and is capable of producing clear and bright images of the moon and the planets. This unit comes with the motorized Celestron CG-3 German equatorial mount to allow slow motion controls on both axes, a quick dovetail attachment, a Star Pointer finderscope, a set of two eyepieces, star chart software, and a rugged, pre-assembled tripod for your convenience.

Quick and easy no-tool setup

Comments about Celestron AstroMaster 130 EQ MD 5.1"/130mm Reflector Telescope Kit:

Tired of Go-To malfunctions. Go back to basics with this very good motorised equatorial mount. Very well constructed with a 130mm reflector at a price no one can beat. Perfect scope to learn the basics of the night sky. Celestron stands behind the product too. Great scope, great tripod, great service, unbeatable price(for now). Why buy a used problem. Make the best of your clear nights. Very portable, but not recommended for a camping trip. Too big but doable if you wish.

Comments about Celestron AstroMaster 130 EQ MD 5.1"/130mm Reflector Telescope Kit:

Ever since I moved into a new house away from the bright city lights, I've been meaning to start learning more about astronomy. I researched different telescopes in this price range and felt that the size and value of this scope would make a nice purchase. B&H had a similar price to [@], but they were including a free red LED flashlight so I gave B&H a chance. The purchase was easy and the package arrived very quickly. I spent the first night assembling the scope and learning about the movement. The included instructions were a little lacking, so it took a while to learn how to install the battery. There are some great Youtube videos that are very important to understand how to aim and balance the telescope. (I didn't understand at first how many adjustments were necessary due to different eyepieces, targets, etc.)The first night I used it, I was able to view the moon very easily and experiment with everything. The second night, I was looking at Jupiter and the Orion Nebula! Gripes: The motor and slow motion cables definitely get in the way, so I would suggest removing the RA cable if you use the motor drive as it seems to be useless anyway. There is some conflicting information about the DEC cable, but I would position that cable up at the top, not below. The motor control North and South hemisphere setting appears to be reversed, also... The mount isn't as solid as I'd like it to be and shakes a little bit. When I locate an object and tighten the mount as much as I can, the object still falls out of view immediately, which can be frustrating. Overall, I think it works well for the price and will last me for a while until I decide to get more serious about the hobby. I wanted something affordable, which would allow me to share the Universe with my daughter, and this is going to work great. I would highly recommend pairing any telescope with NightWatch, or similar book, because the amount of objects up there can be overwhelming if you don't know what you're looking for. I would recommend the accessory kit with the barlow lens and 15mm lens. The field of view on the 15mm is much better than the included lenses, which makes it much easier to see.

Comments about Celestron AstroMaster 130 EQ MD 5.1"/130mm Reflector Telescope Kit:

I bought this telescope after doing quite a bit of research on several types of telescope. For the most bang for your bucks, this telescope could have been a very good choice. You get a relatively fast optic (F/5, i.e. brighter image for the same focal length) and a relatively long focal length.
This would have been a pretty good application for planetary viewing and deep sky oberving. With the equatorial mount, it will allow you to easily track stars with the motor drive. Unfortunately, I didn't have the chance to try it out the mount due to some problems with the counterweights. So, I just snapped the optical tube on the NexStar Goto mount that I have.
Out of the box, the scope and the mount does not look quite durable. The optical tube seems to be an aluminum tube. The secondary miror is held at the front with a plastic structure. This does not look very strong and durable to me, but it does the job (I think). The mount is quite heavy, but the aluminum tripod makes me wonder about stability issue.

I did have a problem with the counterweight. The metal spring that is supposed to hold the weight to the counterweight bar is stuck inside. The first thing I tried intuitively was tapping it with the counterweight bar. Probably, I did not try it at the correct angle, hence, I failed to fix this problem. After waiting for the whole weekend for the Celestron tech support, I decided to return it. I got the response later that the metal bar in the middle of the counterweight can easily be tapped so that the spring would spring back into the original position and not blocking the hole. Well, it didn't work for me, but I guess I could have tried harder?

The scope comes with a built in star finder. This is fixed at the front of the telescope. I found this to be at an awkward angle to reach. It also obstruct your camera if you mount it on the piggy back mount on top of this scope. I didn't have much luck aligning the star finder with my scope, and gave up finally.

The 20mm objective lens in the box is also flimsy when compared to other Ploss lens that I have. However, this gives you the correct-angle viewing, and I think that's a plus.

Comments about Celestron AstroMaster 130 EQ MD 5.1"/130mm Reflector Telescope Kit:

Overall I think this telescope has a lot of potential for what it cost. However were I to go through the process again I might just buy the optical tube and get a sturdier mount, with better eyepieces.

When you're buying a first telescope, you always go in with dreams of Hubble in your head. You won't get that with this, but that doesn't mean you can't see some cool stuff.

The 20mm eyepiece it comes with is... mostly useless. Cheap plastic. The 10mm is decent, but the magnification will only turn Saturn into a bright largish blob, with no definition.

Buy a good quality 6mm or smaller eyepiece, maybe with a doubler, to start to reach out and see more.

The mount isn't very intuitive for a beginner, and initial setup and fine tuning takes a fair bit of work. Moving it all around is like keeping time with a Casio instead of a Rolex. It'll work, but hardly a precision instrument.

That said, if you do get everything "just right", you'll be able to get nice views of the planets, and although I haven't observed the moon yet, I imagine some pretty great views of that too.

My first telescope mainly for beginner astrophotography. With the correct adapters, my DSLR mounts perfectly. The only issue you might have for astrophotography using prime focus is not being able to focus in far enough. The length of the eye piece mounting might be an issue for some. A good barlow lens helps but doubles your magnification.

Scope itself is decent. It's small and light enough to travel with. The stand is 'ok'. Best to not extend the legs out to full as the stand begins to become a little unstable.

For the price, I would definitley purchase again.
