This is a great way to add additional firewire ports to a 17" MacBook Pro, or to a Thunderbolt-equipped MAC with the Sonnet Thunderbolt adapter.

Comments about Sonnet 2-Port FireWire-800 ExpressCard/34 Expansion Card:
Worked just as advertised. Pop it into the ExpressCard slot on a 17" Macbook Pro (the 13" and 15" models do not have an ExpressCard slot) and it works immediately with no configuration. Using this card has benefits versus using a FireWire hub or chaining devices in that it adds a whole new FireWire channel, not just sharing bandwidth with other devices. For me this means being able to hook up a DVCPRO-HD camera to the built in FireWire port, and having a FireWire hard drive connected to this card for live capture of HD video. I've purchased other Sonnet devices and the build quality and reliability is relatively good compared to competing manufacturers.

This is great for adding more firewire 800 ports, although it needs to be powered if the device draws power from the computer.

I use this product to capture video into a laptop that does not have a firewire port, but does have an express card slot. card is secure in the slot and very well made and, apparently, has a built in driver- or at least behaves as though it does. I would buy it again [...]

Comments about Sonnet 2-Port FireWire-800 ExpressCard/34 Expansion Card:
Since the new 17" MacBook Pro only has ONE FW outlet (come on Apple, what happened here??), I had to get some extra ports to accommodate all the externalities that I need hooked up to my machine. 2-Port FireWire-800 ExpressCard/34 is a wonderful solution, except for one thing that they do not mention... You can only connect self-powered drives through it. So my portable G-drives do not work through the ExpressCard, since they need power from the computer to run.
Comments about Sonnet 2-Port FireWire-800 ExpressCard/34 Expansion Card:
I tried it on my macbook pro and didn't show up anywhere.
Looks pretty solid card but just didn't work out.
I called BHphoto support ( said compatibility issues), and they were very helpfull and finally got a full refund on it.
