I bought the lens for slide copying with a Nikon D800, for which itworks well. I attach pictures of the apparatus. The light is a standard,clip-mount, reflector light one sees everywhere. The bulb is a 13WGlobe CFL. The slide carriers are VuPoint (B&H VUNST35) the diffuseris 3046 Cinegan Velvet Frost (B&H RO3046S) the tripod head is an oldBogen I had on hand. The hardest part was getting a good lightsource. I tried a flash, an LED Video light, a Testrite Reflector(B&H TER10), etc. The simple clip-mount, reflector light worked thebest. Also, a report cover works nearly as well as the CineganVelvet Frost but there is a difference in amount of light transmitted and grain showing through the slide. The big surprise is that this is an excellent lens overall, especially for portraits. The resolution is excellent and it required zero auto focus correction. At wide apertures, it beautifully isolates subjects with narrow depth of field. The finer points of this lens are discussed by Ming Thein in a post dated February 1, 2013. I agree with everything he says about it.

A macro lens without a manual aperture ring sure disables the ability to use some of the traditional macro gear like bellows. I still cannot believe that Nikon would design a lens targeted at macro photography without working in an aperture ring. Still, this lens gets plenty close without further extension... maybe too close for many subjects. I so prefer to have the aperture be from the ring when I'm working in tight situations. But oh well.
But aside from the "G," 60mm is a little wide for bugs, and might yield too much perspective distortion on some objects when you attempt to fill the frame at close range. The 105mm VR and the 3rd party macro offerings up to 150mm by Sigma might be worth considering.
It's not built like a tank... nor is it built like a flower. But with its light weight, it feels like a reasonable construction design and adds little weight.
As far as using it as a portrait lens, well, again the optics are great for it; however, if you're doing really close-in work rather than traditional portraits, well, I'd still prefer my 50mm f/1.2 AIS or the 50 f/1.4 just for the shallow DOF.
The front element is not very much recessed compared to other true macro lenses ... so do be careful around pollen-bearing objects and other things that might soil or damage your glass. If you put a filter on this thing, remove it for macros... and use a high-end filter like a B+W for the rest of the time. Don't spoil the great optics with inferior glass.
Focus is absolutely fast.

I got this lens to do macro phtotography anbd aquarium photography. The short focal length is terrific for this and the auto focus is very fast and accurate. I have some really sharp images from the aquarium I was unable to obtain with other lenses.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G ED Macro Autofocus Lens:
Only used the lens once. The close-ups of butterfly heads were sharp and clear and I was able to get as close to the subject as 4 inches away - which is what I wanted. However, I learned that I need a very steady hand to take theses close-ups. Will use a tripod next time.

While the lens is sharp the focus speed is somewhat too far on the glacial side for my likes.

This lens is great at capturing very sharp images very close up. It is whisper quiet and tack sharp! No better macro lens for the price than this!

As letterpress printers, we needed a lens that could capture the fine detail of textures and impressions our printing process is known for. We are photographing a wide variety of paper goods [from greeting cards to poster prints to wedding invitations]. Although, I'm still getting used to using the lens thus far I'm very satisfied with the quality of the images. Since nearly everything is flat art work we use a tripod and can take our time shooting.

I've used the "old" 60mm AFD micro for many years. Sharp for macro or close work, not as good for toward infinity work. The new AFS version is SHARP at any distance. AFS is quick (although I don't use it with close up work...manual). A buddy of mine picked up one of these for his D800 and I was able to run tests between both new and old versions...and then I purchased one!

Comments about Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G ED Macro Autofocus Lens:
Bought this lens with a dream of a 2 in 1 macro/portrait lens combo for my D7K.
As a macro lens this should be great, but time will tell if I will say the same about the portraits ...
Initial test shot produced very sharp pictures with nice bokeh when focusing close subject.

Needed a good portrait lens (for animals) and the macro ability of this lens is what sold me vs buying the 50 1.4. Turns out this was a great decision as the working distance of the macro feature really helps with the DX format of my D7000 ...for pet portraits indoors. It's tack sharp at 2.8 and the bokeh is respectable when shooting at close range. Nikon's March discount helped to push me towards this purchase. Thanks Nikon!

This is a great macro lens. Only downfall is that you have to get SO close sometimes that lighting is an issue.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G ED Macro Autofocus Lens:
I originally bought this lens because my wife loves to take macro photos and I wanted a good lens for her to play with. After receiving this lens I was absolutely amazed by the portrait quality of this particular lens. It is a great go to lens if you are in need of a good sharp portrait with nice bokeh. It has now become a great addition to our lens collection and will be our main prime lens until we have enough $ for the 85mm f1.4.My only negative comment would be that the focusing can be slow and a bit tricky at times but overall not a major concern for what you are paying for. If you want faster then you have to pay for it, however, when I use it with my D800, the outcome is excellent.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G ED Macro Autofocus Lens:
I have had a 60mmD lens for years and decided to upgrade to the AF-S 2.8G to go with my D4. I find it very versatile and one of my favorites when I don't need distance. It can be used for macro, portraits or anything you want to shoot within that range. It has a lovely DOF, sharp images. It is also very light weight, so easy to bring along for event shooting when you can get close in to your subjects. Also useful in low light shooting.
I have only a few "tryout" shots with my new "G" lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G ED Macro Autofocus Lens:
I bought this lens for macro, portrait, and street use. Unfortunately, my version had some dust in the elements so I returned it. I played with it somewhat and it is a good lens, but not great. The bokeh is good and the ability close focus 1:1 was nice, but it is slow to focus.
It feels light in the hands, but to me the materials used felt cheap. I decided not to exchange this lens for another one, rather I went with a Zeiss that I really happy with.

On both FX and DX format Nikons, this little beauty brings home crisp, vivid images. It is solid, quiet, compact and light, which makes it a pleasure to shoot with. For me it doubles as a "normal" lens on my D600. I love my 105 VR, but for sheer sharpness this lens has it beat.

I use the 105mm and 200mm micro lenses so this is the final Nikon lens for versatility covering most of macro shooting.
