I bought the lens for slide copying with a Nikon D800, for which itworks well. I attach pictures of the apparatus. The light is a standard,clip-mount, reflector light one sees everywhere. The bulb is a 13WGlobe CFL. The slide carriers are VuPoint (B&H VUNST35) the diffuseris 3046 Cinegan Velvet Frost (B&H RO3046S) the tripod head is an oldBogen I had on hand. The hardest part was getting a good lightsource. I tried a flash, an LED Video light, a Testrite Reflector(B&H TER10), etc. The simple clip-mount, reflector light worked thebest. Also, a report cover works nearly as well as the CineganVelvet Frost but there is a difference in amount of light transmitted and grain showing through the slide. The big surprise is that this is an excellent lens overall, especially for portraits. The resolution is excellent and it required zero auto focus correction. At wide apertures, it beautifully isolates subjects with narrow depth of field. The finer points of this lens are discussed by Ming Thein in a post dated February 1, 2013. I agree with everything he says about it.

A macro lens without a manual aperture ring sure disables the ability to use some of the traditional macro gear like bellows. I still cannot believe that Nikon would design a lens targeted at macro photography without working in an aperture ring. Still, this lens gets plenty close without further extension... maybe too close for many subjects. I so prefer to have the aperture be from the ring when I'm working in tight situations. But oh well.

But aside from the "G," 60mm is a little wide for bugs, and might yield too much perspective distortion on some objects when you attempt to fill the frame at close range. The 105mm VR and the 3rd party macro offerings up to 150mm by Sigma might be worth considering.

It's not built like a tank... nor is it built like a flower. But with its light weight, it feels like a reasonable construction design and adds little weight.

As far as using it as a portrait lens, well, again the optics are great for it; however, if you're doing really close-in work rather than traditional portraits, well, I'd still prefer my 50mm f/1.2 AIS or the 50 f/1.4 just for the shallow DOF.

The front element is not very much recessed compared to other true macro lenses ... so do be careful around pollen-bearing objects and other things that might soil or damage your glass. If you put a filter on this thing, remove it for macros... and use a high-end filter like a B+W for the rest of the time. Don't spoil the great optics with inferior glass.

    Focus is absolutely fast.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G ED Macro Autofocus Lens:

I bought this lens to be able to shoot wedding rings with, and let me say, it does an amazing job. Before I was just using my 24-70mm f/2.8 lens for rings as that was all I had. My shots were honestly very mediocre. Now, my shots are professional, sharp and perfect. Highly recommend.

Comments about Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G ED Macro Autofocus Lens:

My experience tells me this is the sharpest Nikkor under 200mm focal length. Yes, I have owned all three Nikkor micro lenses, 60G, 105VR and 200/4D. I use 60G as my general walkaround lens and it gives me very sharp, high contrast, distortion-free images. Its AF speed is much faster than that of the AF-D version and 60mm focal length is perfect for my taste. The only downside is a bit heavy due to many glass elements used for high correction.

I purchased this lens as a replacement to my older 60mm 'D' lens since the older one now resides on one of my film bodies. The build quality is excellent, and it is virtually silent in operation. Focusing in AF mode is extremely fast.

This is a super sharp lens with no "racking" making stacking of closeup shots a dream come true.
Works very well for food shots too where front to rear sharpness/details is a must, as well as in product shots for advertising not to mention closeups of small crawlies if that is your field of interest.

Recent purchase. The minute I got this lens, I put it on my Nikon D5300 and went out in the garden to shoot Spring flowers. This lens is quite light and fast focusing, and I had a unique and powerful experience of being "at one" with my camera. All were handheld shots using Aperture priority, mid morning diffuse light, and ISO 400. Most were excellent when displayed on my NEC monitor, Mac Pro. I am very pleased at the sharpness given the handheld nature of the shots. I shoot a lot of flowers, and look forward to even better sharpness when I use a tripod. Great lens.

This lens is very flexible, as a relative new guy to nicer photography, I had used a pair of DX zoom lenses thinking that the flexibility would be a boon, but the relatively slow speed of the lenses left me with a lot of underexposed images. Having moved away from the camera auto settings to all manual settings, I wanted to also try a prime lens... I can't be happier. This lens is nice for it's simplicity, one focal range, fast aperture, and able to really focus in tight - I get what Macro is all about now. It also delivers fantastic portrait shots, and is fast enough for action shots of the dogs in low light w/o a flash. Overall I can say this lens has started me on a faster lens collection to get those really fantastic shots.

Not so sharp on a D7100, but on the D610 in truly rocks!

Comments about Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G ED Macro Autofocus Lens:

I'm using this lens with a D5200 body so the effective focal length is 90mm. This review applies to use with any Nikon DX series camera. This is perfect for closeup photography of smaller items for .. with a comfortable working distance of approximately 30" for a coffee cup sized item. Like any good Micro lens, you can get inches away from the subject for very small items like insects and if most your macro photography is going to be extremely close, you might consider the 105mm Micro lens. I spent a day at Longwood Gardens with this 60mm and a 105mm Micro lens. Was using both lenses for macro & general photography and the 60mm (on my D5200 body) was the best combination. Without any problems, I got right down on the subjects for very close shots but then could easily use the same lens for a general shot across the gardens. With the 105mm Micro, I found myself continually backing away from the subject and often competing with other visitors for space. The 105mm was not effective at all for general shots, particularly within the greenhouse because you just could't get far enough away. If you want a good Micro lens but the convenience of using the same lens for general photography, this is the one to go with. Why not 5 stars, I haven't used this lens enough to feel confident in giving it a prefect rating.

                            This gives some great photos!

When you can focus so close to an object, eg, wedding ring, it makes everything look so clean and detailed, pictures take a new turn in quality.

This is my first foray into the world of macro photography. I wanted a Nikon Micro lens to go with my D7100 and I made the right choice. The auto-focus is right on with just the depth of field I was looking for in my close up shots. I was using a AI 50mm f1.4 with extension tubes for my film work years ago but I can't remember getting photos this sharp before. For a walk around/portrait lens it has the right balance to be carried all day. It's one of the best purchases I've made from B&H. Highly recommended.

I use this lens for general use and find it a fantastic lens. Sharp and auto focus is close to instant with no sound at all, at least nothing I can hear. Seems to be well built for a plastic lens and does not scream cheap! The macro gets really close and focus. I can recommend this lens.

Use this lens on tabletop and macro (flowers) photography. Found it to be very sharp resolution. Used a flash so didnt get a chance to checkout wide open. Would recommend to anyone that needs this focal length.
