Product Highlights
  • Perspective Control
  • Tilt, Shift & Rotation Capability

The Nikon PC-E Nikkor 24mm f/3.5D ED Lens is an ultra-wide lens with special "Perspective Control" tilt and shift functions, making it ideal for architectural and nature photography. Using tilt and shift correction will help obtain a natural-looking perspective in a distortion-free architectural image. The PC-E 24mm lens is compatible with all digital and 35mm film SLR cameras (in manual mode). With the latest digital cameras (i.e. D3, D700 & D300, and later models), auto-aperture control is possible directly from the camera itself.

Three ED glass elements provide improved sharpness and color, while Nikon's Nano Crystal Coat virtually eliminates internal reflections for greater image quality. Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC) offers outstanding color performance and substantially reduced ghosting and flare.

Wide shifting range of ±11.5mm, with a tilting range of ±8.5°.
Three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements offer superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration.
Three aspherical elements virtually eliminate coma and other types of lens aberration even at the widest aperture.
The Nano Crystal Coat virtually eliminates internal reflections across a wide range of wavelengths for even greater image clarity
High-performance Super Integrated Coating (SIC) offers superior color performance and substantially reduced ghosting and flare.
Rounded 9-blade diaphragm for more natural appearance of out-of-focus image elements.

My only criticism of this great lens is that Nikon did not take a leaf from Canon's new 17 TS-E, which allows the tilt axis to be rotated independently of the shift axis (as shipped, these are fixed at 90 degrees from on another, and their orientation may not be changed, officially, except by Nikon Service Centre).

The capacity to change this alignment is so fundamental to using tilt and shift simultaneously that I considered buying a Canon FF body just to be able to use the new 17 TS-E lens.

Even if one takes this route and has the axis orientation changed, the owner must decide, and stick to the choice. The reason the Canon solution is SO much better is that one needs to change this orientation job-by-job. I have decided that, for this focal length, the best arrangement is to have the tilt and shift axes aligned and this I have done.

This 24 PC-E is a brilliant lens, and is so good i now need the 45 and the 85. To be able to control the plane of focus is simply liberating: no need to risk diffraction to get needed depth of field; just a simple tilt and it's done.

Same with shift: correcting perspective in-camera is simple, and this is where Nikon's Live View is simply the best solution around: sub pixel magnification (if necessary) allows pin-sharp focus checks, anywhere in frame (I use 2 D700s).

Potential buyers need to be aware that the shift knob can touch the flash housing if the lens is rotated to the full extent; this clears on the D3 (no flash). The solution is simple, though; just rotate the other way; makes no difference to the operation.

Users need to be aware of not over-tightening the lock knobs for tilt and shift; fortunately the knobs are small—I do not know if I could used this lens in really cold locations for this reason.

The lens is extremely sharp, even wide open, and corner to corner. The manual focus helicoid is pro standard, and feels beautiful to use.

An excellent lens, but I will be an early buyer of any future version that works the way the new Canons do.

Stunning lens helped me produce some amazing images. But always had an odd rattle and was difficult to set the shift. The shift pressure screw fell out, along with the bracket that holds it together inside the lens. Useless now.

Comments about Nikon Wide Angle PC-E Nikkor 24mm f/3.5D ED Manual Focus Lens:

I come from 35+ years of view camera studio and environmental background and 40+ from 35mm and medium format. Including teaching in workshops, Higher Ed, commercial and fine arts.I am using this on a Nikon D800E.While this is a step back from the total control I have using my view cameras it is the next best thing. Focus stacking can be used with it if you can't get all that you need from the tilt/swing, but stacking is such a pain. The lense is as sharp as one could wish. I do not think that I will have the shift/rise axis converted to "landscape compatible" mode as has been suggested by others. I find that I prefer the 90* opposed shift for composing landscape.I DO wish that Nikon had made the shift/rise and tilt/swing on two separate rotating rings as some other manuf have done. If they did that this would be an absolute winner in all aspects. As it is, though, I still feel this is the best choice on the market for less than $

Comments about Nikon Wide Angle PC-E Nikkor 24mm f/3.5D ED Manual Focus Lens:

Best used for Architecture, some usefulness for Landscape if you need to Scheimpflug. If you don't know this word you don't need this lens.
Best way to correct perspective while putting camera a right level to record scene. Next best thing to a view camera.

Good: Great optics, sharp, contrasty and easy to understand. Outstanding build and overall excellent piece of glass on a D800. There is remarkably little distortion for a 24mm lens. Electronic stop down function is clever and helpful. The movements are surprisingly extensive. I rarely have need of tilt function.

Not perfect: Slight barrel distortion easily corrected in your raw editor. Knobs are small but if larger would interfere with camera body and certain movements. I classify this as a concession to reality. There is some vignetting at maximum shift at wide apertures but I've rarely needed that much shift on assignment.

Stuff you'll want to know: This has manual focus and manual aperture setting. On this lens you set the aperture but focus and compose wide open, the camera (most of them, check compatibility chart) stoops down at shutter release. On the older version of the PC lens (the one without tilt) it was easy to forget to twist the aperture ring after composing and focusing.
Few current DSLRs have view finders designed for manual focus. They are small and dim compared to film SLRs of yore. You'll need plenty of light for accurate focus. However, at 24mm inherent depth of field of the optic is great so you won't find it impossible to get acceptable focus if you stop down a couple of stops.

Comments about Nikon Wide Angle PC-E Nikkor 24mm f/3.5D ED Manual Focus Lens:

I already owned the 45mm PC-E Nikkor, and loved it so much that I finally decided to pony up the additional cash for this wide angle tilt/shift companion lens. Very glad that I did. I don't miss the film days, but the tilt/shift control of my old 8x10 view camera allowed me to take pictures that you simply couldn't take otherwise. These high quality lenses bring much of that capability to the full Frame DSLR world, and they are worth every penny.

To be able to rotate the lens was unsuspected positive, after reading previous, now obsolete reviews. Glad that Nikon responded to this important demand.

This is a very well made lens, which can produce outstanding quality images. However, it is also a lens which has a significant learning curve. There are technical aspects about a PC lens which one must know and understand to get the best results out of this type of lens. For landscape purposes, the ideal set up for the lens would be for the tilt and shift functions to be parallel to one another, instead of a right angle. Nikon will modify the lens to this configuration if you choose (at a cost). However, the Canon equivalent lens allows you to switch back and forth on the fly, which seems like a better design in that respect.

This lens really allows you to compose creatively where other lenses do not. Shooting landscapes with this lens using only 1-2 degrees of tilt allows for larger apertures and lower diffraction than normal lenses. Do not overdo the tilt unless you are going for the diorama effect. Use the left-right shift for seamless panoramas. Use rise shift for architecture. Once you learn how to use this lens, you will not want to take it off.

This lens is very sharp all the way to the edges at any stop. It was my first tilt/shift for SLR work but very easy to figure out and work. I read all the cons on the lens before buying and have yet to confirm one on my own. This lens will definitely be in my bag at all times. Only thing I do not like, as shipped, the angles are set the wrong way for landscape and tabletop photography. You can't get tilt at the same time as rise/fall — you only get swing. You can send the lens to Nikon and they will make the correction, for a fee.

Comments about Nikon Wide Angle PC-E Nikkor 24mm f/3.5D ED Manual Focus Lens:

Being accustomed to shooting 4x5 I consider this lens an absolute must have for landscape and architectural photography. It's incredibly sharp and contrasty across a wide aperture range, the manual focus and aperture rings are large, comfortable and precise and overall build quality excellent. Unlike many reviewers I have no issue with the control knobs and button locations on this unit. A surprisingly welcome feature is the electronic aperture control which offers the benefits of not only convenience but also speed allowing the lens to double a useful walk around manual focus wide angle (when zeroed); something I really never considered practical for my old Nikkor 28PC with its manual preset aperture. Only problem is now I really want to add both the 45 and 85mm PC-Es.

I used this lens for Architectural photos with my D700. The images are crisp, the bokeh is creamy. It might be heavier than I expected. But, it is solidly built. I love this lens.

Comments about Nikon Wide Angle PC-E Nikkor 24mm f/3.5D ED Manual Focus Lens:

I bought this so that I could take photos of landscapes and have the entire landscape in focus. For that, it seems to work well. Some people use a focussing screen to assist placement of the focal plane. I use a Marshall's on-camera monitor (w/ peaking) to ensure the focal plane is where I want it. It is possible through the viewfinder, but difficult!

My biggest cause for concern is that the tilt work one way fine, but is tight and difficult to use in the opposite direction.

Comments about Nikon Wide Angle PC-E Nikkor 24mm f/3.5D ED Manual Focus Lens:

I primarily use this for architectural photography. Takes a little getting used to, but with a little time it performs brilliantly. When using with a nikon D700 you lose a little of the shift movement when raising due to the overhang of the onboard flash. The locking knobs feel somewhat cheap for such an expensive lens.
