Comments about Swann SW244-BVD B/W Video Doorphone:

My House had a "New Line NL 300" installed in 1998 that was failing in displayed picture. This "Swann SW244-BVD" is almost a direct replacement functionally. The main diffrence is the form factor of the camera end of the intercom. The New Line was rectangular and the Swann is square. The functions are the same with door chimes, visual of the visitor , audio intercom and Electric Door release.

All of these functions work the same on both units, however they will not work with one end being Swann and the other being New Line. The same two wire cabling works for either.

The one small irritation with the Swann system is the voice intercom can only be activated by the monitor unit after a call button depression by the visitor on the camera unit. This means you can look at the outside world from the monitor side but not converse unless the camera call button gets depressed. This is different from the New Line unit in that if you see you can talk.

The camera angle is adjustable up a little and down a lot via a plastic tab. Since my hole in the wall was determined by the original unit even all the way up cut off some person's heads. I removed the adjustment slide tab completely by removing two screws on the circuit board and using a needle nose plier to compress the plastic clip for the slide tab. After that I replaced the circuit board and screws and then used a small screw driver to engage the plastic slide that the tab had interfaced with. I adjusted the camera direction for maximum elevation where the camera lens touched the window and that was enough for my view.

I found that even though the two wire cable should have worked in any polarity, that the voice intercom required one polarity and not the other. I just switched the wires at the Monitor and all was well.

The Swann unit directly drives my door strike "Adams Rite 7140-520" The camera unit gives a polarity but I doubt that it matters to the door strike.

If I wasn't replacing an existing unit I think the install would take minimal time. Just running the provided wire and mounting the camera and monitor. So maybe a couple or three hours. My Swann worked as expected and I am happy to have replaced with such an inexpensive and useful system.

I live in the low desert of California and the old unit, that uses technology that looks the same as the Swann unit, survived 15 summers of some extreme heat. The failure mode reminded me of how old TVs would fail with dried out electrolytic capacitors.

Yes, a color unit would have been more spiffy. But knowing that the existing wiring would work and the higher temp specs and the no risk price made this a very easy, and unless something happens to show otherwise , a good choice.

Very disappointed with this product and thought at least my wasted time in installing it would be worth something if I could give you all a warning: quite simply the audio often does not work, and when it does, the sound of anyone outside is very quiet, even if speaking right into the mic. The video will also sometimes turn of when you push the talk button, etc. Very unreliable, don't waste your time like I did! (Only by knowing that I have given others fair warning, can I feel this was not a complete waste of time)

Comments about Swann SW244-BVD B/W Video Doorphone:

Simple product. Very easy to setup. I didn't expect it to be so big. Construction seems to be solid enough, yet device (both the camera and the main unit) looks cheap. But the product works as it is intended. However, the manufacturer looks like doesn't bother with proper wrapping of the product, since my unit came with awfully scratched screen of the main unit. It looks like it has be refurbished or something. That may explain its price drop recently.

I figured out that the video switch on the back that says off and on, turns the video on in the off position. Ok, no big deal there. The door bell rings and the video works but I cannot get the audible to work. The person outside can hear me but I cannot hear them.
