I've used one of these for 6 years and have really liked it. It saves a lot of space in my studio--virtually all the space that would be taken up by a floor stand is available for something else, it moves easily, and there's not the hassle of running over cords. I like that the extension bar is now much sturdier than the one on my old boom.

I wish movement on the x-axis could also be tightened with a handle like on the y-axis so the mounting plate could be attached to the wall horizontally, since the studs behind the desired location on my wall only run horizontally.

It could also be much improved with a ball joint or universal joint and more clearance for the handles, because it can be quite complicated and challenging to point an attached softbox at certain angles the way it is currently designed.

I bought this for my school's tv studio to hold a flourescent light so I could eliminate a stand in my classroom. Without any weight on it, it works perfectly smoothly but put any weight on it and it is difficult to extend and retract.
I had planned on getting one for my photography studio if it worked well, but I'm reconsidering it now that I have one.

This thing is perfect. I needed this to fit in a spot without having too much clutter. I am currently using a Speedlight on an umbrella adapter on it. Easy installation and holds that amount of weight with no difficulty.

            Perfect for small spaces

Comments about Manfrotto 098B Wall Mounting Boom Arm, Black - 47.2-82.6" (1.2-2.1m):

I shoot every day in my small woodshop and I kept tripping over the tripod. This mount allows me to position my camera at an infinite number of positions to capture every corner and angle of my shop. The long, telescoping boom arm is really stable and the included clips capture your cords and keeps them organized. I paired this with a ball and socket tripod head to allow even more adjustability to the camera angle

This is strong enough to hold a White Lightning Ultra 1600, which is exactly what I needed it for. My new studio is a bit smaller than my old one, and a regular free standing boom is a little too big to be convenient.

Comments about Manfrotto 098B Wall Mounting Boom Arm, Black - 47.2-82.6" (1.2-2.1m):

We've mounted 2 arms in our 25' wide shooting area as primary BG light mounts. These arms allow a very wide adjustment range and are strong enough to easily hold a monobloc and medium soft box - perfect for high key.

Clients have mentioned how they feel less "closed in" now that the c-stands are gone from the sides of the shooting area.
Re-configuring from High-Key to std portrait, accent or even noir style lighting is very quick and easy.
Swiveling and feathering the lights is also fairly easy to accomplish using a step stool.

Be aware: The mounting plates are drilled for 2 optional widths of bolting to the wall, and neither one is suitable for a standard stud width - you'll have to angle the mount bolts slightly towards stud center to get a complete bite on all 4 bolts using the narrower set of holes. However, doing so makes for a rather rigid mount. If you can manage it, put 2 studs together and use the wide spacing pattern to mount.

Because a lot of my french canadians friends already bought at BH, I will do a french review.Pour un installation studio permanente, ce boom est indispensable, avec son extension, il offre une excellente portée et que dire en hauteur.Pour cela je vous suggère de ne pas l'installer trop haut. Il se replie complètement, et il peut être très discret.

This boom arm is great for a small studio. Keeps the stand off of the floor and out of the way, and allows me to position the light almost anywhere that I need it. I will probably be adding another one to the opposite wall.

I saw a version of the Manfrotto wall mount arm, actually the Auto version with a spring loaded balancer, I did some research and found the 098B wall mount boom arm. This item was much cheaper, and had the features I needed up/down horizontal.
the length of the boom is adjustable though theres a maximum weight limit on the end of the boom. I use an manfrotto autopole to support the boom arm though it's probably not recommended, but it gives more options to locate different light sources. I would use a pack/head light setup with umbrella. The profoto D1 I have seems to be a bit heavy at max. extension

This wall boom is a great replacement for a light stand. It really frees up a lot of floor space. Also it eliminates the need for counterweights and the possibility of tipping. (I had a gymnast doing acrobatic poses who was really anxious about knocking over light stands - no worry now) The diameters of the boom segments are larger than I expected - larger than the stand-mounted boom it replaced. Quite sturdy, adjusts smoothly and easily.

The instructions are meager - no suggestion for mounting height. I figured it should be high enough to walk under but low enough to reach easily. I held it up at arms length, holding the boom horizontally in my clenched fist to determine how high to mount it. I removed the base plate from the boom arm to mount it and then re-attached the boom arm. About four inches lower would have been better for ease of adjustment without having to stand on tip-toes. I intend to lower it when I get around to it.

I use the boom for my hair light, a small mono-light. It's cord is too short to reach from the end of the boom to the wall plug, so I mounted a surge protector extension cord on the wall near the base plate of the boom. This provides the convenience of a remote on-off switch.

I'm pleased with this boom. It's an excellent alternative to a stand-mounted boom. I'm considering getting more, perhaps the shorter model, for a couple of background lights.

My studio space is limited, so the wall mounted Manfrotto boom arms allow me to put up a light without the clutter of another light stand. They are especially good for hair and background lights.

Perfect for what I needed! Frees up floor space - protects the flash from getting knocked around. Puts the light right where I need it.

This boom arm is solidly built and easy to use. It is a bit more limited than a boom stand, but you don't have to use so much floor space, and you don't need to deal with a heavy counterweight. This boom arm can be mounted on an Autopole using two super clamps, and that's how I initially used it. It was very nice, takes much less space than a boom stand, but I screwed it on a column to get more space (since I use it mostly as a hair light for portraits). It's ideal for small studio.

If I were shooting tabletop products more often, I'd keep one on an Autopole. This would be very useful, since lighting system around the table can get cluttered very easily. However, adjusting height of this arm on Autopole can be a bit tricky, especially if your head is heavy. So, test the setup thoroughly before using it on a real job.

I use this boom arm for both canon speedlights with umbrella modifiers & my White Lightning x1600 monolights. It's great. It does need to be anchored to something legit though. . . don't think this thing is gonna hold up any sort of load if you aren't anchored into a stud or some other sturdy anchor point. Also, the arm that controls the up/down tilt has a fixed tension, so it's not the kind of thing where you can just crank down harder to hold heavy loads. It either holds it or it doesn't.

As always, Manfrotto's instructions are either non-existant or simply not there.

I have a small studio and it works great
It mounts very easily on a wall and allows a wide range of light placement for hair lights, backdrops or special lighting effects without having to work around a floor stand.

Comments about Manfrotto 098B Wall Mounting Boom Arm, Black - 47.2-82.6" (1.2-2.1m):

Installation is very simple. The arm extends smoothly, and has 4 clips to hold cables - preventing them from dangling and getting in the way - and especialy useful useful if you shoot children's portraits!

The bracket is strong, and I've not noticed any movement/slipping even with large softboxes attached.
