The "boom" clamp has a lock hole (for a pin) for holding vertical position (no boom rotation), BUT in boom position, there is only one secure rotation position and clamped in place. The problem arises in attempt to hold and balance a heavy load. (I have the Spider TD6+2-4' soft box: heavy). There is only one hole at tip of boom shaft. Assuming you can attached a sand bag to it, one only has one option for balance (moving in and out the boom shaft!). This is very difficult to do. I have my unit mounted on a Smith-Micro dolly; when trying to balance, I pull the feet out of the dolly (a dolly fault). My rating is based on the boom optional use; else, a 4 star rating is desered.

Comments about Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand (Black):

I have had one of these for years but needed a second one for two set ups on the same day. I have used it repeatedly putting a flash head and strip bank at the end, probably more than the recommmended weigh limit. It has held up beautifully. I put some weighs on the leg crossbars in addition to the "sand bag" to make sure it doesn't tip.
If you are planning on adjusting it's placement often during a session, you may consider adding wheels to the legs. They make it so much easier to adjust its position on the set with everything all attached. You'll need a larger case to accomdate the addition of the wheels as compared to no wheels. I compared it to the Avenger version which in my opinion had very little advantage. I use lead and iron weights in the "sand bag." There are other boom stands but none as easy to transport as this one.
I take the large lever handle off for transportation so it won't break. I keep the little plastic tab washer on the bolt where the lever handle goes all the time with no trouble, even though they recommend taking it off. It keeps everything in place during trave.

Comments about Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand (Black):

I use this boom stand on almost all my shoots. It's great for holding a heavy shotgun/blimp mic above an actor's head, or holding a 500W light behind an actor's head for a hair light. I've even used it to hold reflectors. It's light weight compared to the alternatives. It's durable as I've broken other stands in the same time that I've had this one. It's a must have in my kit.

I use this primarily for on location shoots and it does not disappoint! I don't have to worry about anything because it feels very sturdy and well made (like most manfrotto products). The only thing I wish is that it came WITH a counterweight instead of just the bag..

I was in the market for a nice solid boom arm and came across the 420B. It's a great light stand that double as a boom arm. The stand converts to a boom easily and is a great concept. I no longer have to carry two separate pieces (stand and boom) anymore. It's not as strong as a dedicated boom arm.. but it's perfect for what I need.

The counter weight sand bag is perfect; rugged and definitely needed to take the pressure off the boom locking mechanism. Nice height, nice extension.

AND very portable. Get it, you'll like it.

Comments about Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand (Black):

There are times when I need a light way up high. There are times when I need a boom stand to stand far left and out of the shot. This one stand can do both. What the product shot doesn't show is how the boom can be telescoped into the main stand and become a vertical shaft which makes for a 12' 8" tall light stand. Manfrotto even includes an empty sand bag for counter balance when using the boom aspect of the stand. If there is a downside, they could have designed the stand with one more telescoping section in the vertical main shaft. In other words, when used as a boom stand the vertical part should allow for more height. Otherwise, I love this device! - John

This has been a great purchase for me! Highly recommend it! I enjoy using it as a boom, then folding it up and using it as a light stand! All in one! Very convenient!

Comments about Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand (Black):

Well worth the cost for a capable and flexible stand. I work mostly with light weight speedlight setups, so I cannot speak as to how well it will hold up for heavier jobs.

Folding down to barely under 45.5 inches tall, this will not be your go-to light weight rig for packing into a small car. It will, however, mean that you have loads of space in your gear bag, once you find one large enough to comfortably fit it.

When raised as a boom, the shoulder is only around 6 feet 3 inches. Personally I would have preferred a set of three shorter sections for the main riser and had an extra foot or so for when working with standing subjects.

Over all I am pleased with it, but am considering the following modifications to address some minor short comings:
                                  1. Finding a suitable sliding clamp to hang the counter weight from for easier adjustments when going in and out.
                                  2. Replacing the legs with a heavier pipe, and possibly allowing for extensions. The stand is already beefy, but a little extra weight at the bottom couldn't hurt.

Perfect boom arm for lighting or audio. Folds up nice and neat. A great alternative to the standard bulky, heavy duty C-stand.

Comments about Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand (Black):

I use this boom to suspend a shotgun mic above talent in my studio. It's absolutely perfect for that. It ships with a reversible spigot head that will accommodate both standard thread diameters, one of which is a perfect fit for my Azden shock mount. In this application, the counterweight isn't even necessary, but it's good to know it's there. I'm not giving it five stars only because it doesn't ship with any cord clips. A few of those should be included, considering the fact that it's a boom, after all.

Comments about Manfrotto 420B Combi Boom Stand (Black):

Not as sturdy as a c-stand but a lot easier to transport. I recommend an extra few sandbags for the base if you plan on extending the boom at all.

It's very well built with a quality feel to it. The only downside is that I wish the legs/base spread a little wider for extra stability when the boom is extended.
