A tripod head is required and not included with these legs. Be sure you purchase a tripod head to attach to your camera.
The Gitzo GT3541L Series 3 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs is a full eye-level height, four-section tripod that uses advanced "Carbon 6X" carbon fiber material for its leg construction. This improved tubing is stronger than its 12 layer predecessor. Although the tubing is lighter, it still offers the same resistance to vibration. Carbon "6X" is manufactured using a complex, 3-D process weaving six layers of carbon fiber into smooth, solidly constructed tubes.
This lightweight tripod (4.7 lb, 2.1 kg) extends to a full height of 71.3" (181 cm) and the legs can be spread to a minimum height of 6.3", (16 cm) for ground-level shooting. The center column locking collar above the tripod shoulder makes it easier to adjust the column quickly, and it can easily be inverted for an alternative shooting angle or low level macro work.
The GT3541L is ideal for use with professional equipment, medium format cameras, and SLRs with a 300mm lens up to 400mm maximum. It offers an excellent load capacity rating of 39.6 lb (18kg) and good torsional rigidity.

I am an advanced amateur photographer and have been procrastinating about buying a new tripod to replace my very old Star D 100. I shoot a lot of Macros, do landscapes and wildlife, and wanted a lighter stronger tripod that could get low to the ground. My D100 had a geared side column that could be rotated through about 120 degrees, but it was about 2 lbs heavier and not as stable as the Gitzo. I am 5 foot 9 inches and shrinking and to get the Gitzo at perfect eye level without stooping, I have to open the 4th leg about 6 inches. without opening the 4th section I can stoop a bit and still use the tripod.
So what is great:
lightweight, strong, stable, multiple leg angle settings, rapid center column, very quick to use and is reversible. The stowed size is about 3 inches shorter than my D100 and it still opens to a taller height.
Not so great:
Gitzo says you can set up the ground set without tools. This is very true and takes a few minutes at most, but if you have used the 2 new set screws one to lock your ball head and one to lock the top plate to the column, then you must use the supplied Allen wrench to first unlock the ball head so you can remove it and then use the wrench again to unlock the top plate from the column, then you can easily set up the ground set. Not exactly toolless if you are taking advantage of the new locking features. I could also say price, but when you look at the workmanship of this tripod, you know you really are getting your monies worth and that it will last a lifetime.

My main reason to purchase this tripod was handle my D4, 70-200mm, external flash, and a hook to hold my camera bag. This Tripod is very stable and held a heavy load.

Comments about Gitzo GT3541L Series 3 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
I love this tripod but does have a few things that don't warrant a 5 star rating. Adjusting the splay of the legs is time consuming and clumsy. Removing the center coloumn is not all that easy or secure.
My Giottos tripod came with a fantantic case at almost 40% of the cost of the Gitzo. I get a bag with a cinch. Ouch. For this price. Someone needs to rethink this.
I recommend this tripod but is not the perfect tripod.

Comments about Gitzo GT3541L Series 3 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
Make no mistake, this is a very capable support platform for telephoto lenses and everything smaller and lighter. The extra height of this model has already proven itself when taking landscapes from a hillside. This was my prime motivation in selecting this model over the shorter versions. It is not an inexpensive tripod, but every time I use it, it makes me smile.

Comments about Gitzo GT3541L Series 3 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
This is the second tripod we buy from Gitzo. As professional photographer specializing in travel photography, we want light, reliabl and small tripods once they are folded to put in a regular luggage. Very easy to set up, very easy to use, simple to fold and the most important thing very reliable whenever we travel. We use the tripod with wide angle like 17-35mm mounted on Nikon Reflex cameras but alos lenses like Nikon 200-400mm used with a winberley head for wildlife photography. The price of the tripod seems maybe expansive but it is worth for all photography situations.

I waited a long time to purchase a tripod of this caliber and I absolutely think it was worth the wait. I purchased this with the Markins tripod base so it fold down even smaller and is more stable

Comments about Gitzo GT3541L Series 3 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
Replaced a big HD aluminum tripod with this one because of long lasting movement after focus, and timed shutter release with a Sigma 800mm telephoto. Problem taken care of. This is a rigid, steadfast well constructed piece of equipment. Youtube has a review where the H is beat out of it with little/no effect to it's integrity. Very pleased with the purchase and not disappointed I paid more for it than my first child's birth.

Comments about Gitzo GT3541L Series 3 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
The GT3541L is my second Gitzo tripod. I had a GT3330SLV, a great tripod, which was lost in a fire. The new tripod is a few inches shorter when folded, easier to pack on hikes for landscape and nature shooting. I took out the center extension as soon as it arrived, simple to do, because I plan to use it for ground level macro shots as well as eye level shots. This tripod is slightly taller at full extension than the GT 3330, an advantage when shooting on slopes and uneven surfaces. The twist locks on the legs make it easy and fast to extend or fold up. Overall a great, stable base for my Nikon D800 and 70-200 mm lens. I learned that the screw on rubber feet can twist loose, so you should check for tightness often when folding or extending the legs of the tripod.

I upgraded to this from the series 1 and the stability is much better, and I love the locking legs.
Easy set up, and even though it is large, I find it to be fine on weight and that is with a Tech Cam mounted to it.

Used it for a recent photography workshop, and absolutely loved it! Quick to setup to eye level (I'm 6-feet tall), super stable, and collapses to a very packable size. Great tripod!

Comments about Gitzo GT3541L Series 3 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
This is an amazingly stable tripod and sets up extremely fast. I have used it with a 1000mm lens with 2x teleconverter and a gusty crosswind and my pictures came out perfect and videos smooth. It is an amazingly sturdy tripod with very little to weigh you down. I bought a second immediately after using. It is just amazing and finally I have a great stable tripod that is tall enough for me to use without crouching.

Comments about Gitzo GT3541L Series 3 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
My old tripod was okay, but why spend money if you can live with what you have. It walked away on me, something like my first marriage. Long legs were essential, long long legs. I shoot landscapes in vertically challenging places often. So I needed a tripod with maximum flexibility in leg length and direct-ability. This tripod is tall enough to use as the frame for a three sided wall tent. It is quite taller than me, which puts the camera above the crowds if I am shooting in a crowd and stand on someone piggyback or something, rickety usually. The rule is only the camera needs to be steady and dry. Is it sturdy enough? Sometimes in wind it could be better, but I don't have access to a mule to lug a really sturdy tripod and which the airlines would happily overcharge for. It has a hook on the bottom of the head plate for weight. The camera pack sometimes with rocks works well as a weight. With a 4X5 it wouldn't matter, but the slap of the mirror in the DSLR will blur the image when shooting with the 100-400 Zoom. For that I hold onto the ball head and add my weight to it so it reduces the vibration enough. This tripod is topped with a double panning Arca Swiss Monoball head, which at one point early in our relationship I doubted the need for two panning plates, but found out why they are needed. For horizontal images if the camera is tilted above or below the horizon line the lower horizontal control will pan level as long as the head is bubble level. For vertical shots the top panning plate works wonderfully as a vertical pan.

I am very pleased with the tripod. It is light weight, easy to adjust, and has a clip on the bottom of the center post to hang a bag. If you purchase one, be sure to tighten the rubber cushions at the bottom of the legs. I did not have mine tight and lost one shooting.

Landscape, Bird shots with wimberley head ll
It is easy to set up and break down.
Is able to hold camera and lens combination of over 35lbs.Very solid even in windy situations.
It is a slight disadvandage in length when boken down, but more than makes up in it's full eye- level height.

Comments about Gitzo GT3541L Series 3 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
I use Gitzo GL3541L together with Acratech GV2 ballhead to support either my Nikon D300S or D700 with up to 70-200 F2.8 lens. Fantastic build quality and versatility. It takes seconds to have the tripod fully extended which makes shooting more pleasurable. I use some Blue Locktite to fix the ballhead to the tripod to make sure it stays on without being loose.
The tripod is light enough to carry it on the shorter expeditions. I wish Gitzo would include padded storage case for this rather expensive tripod....also, what's happened to the lifetime warranty? and the tripod in made in Italy - not Germany anymore....

I use this tripod together with the Acratech GP Ballhead, sometimes in combination with Acratech´s Nodal Rail for panoramas. For me, this is the perfect combination. Exremely stable and sturdy, even when the camera isn't centered over the tripod, e.g. when shooting panoramas and the camera is mounted on the end of the nodal rail.
The built quality of this tripod is superb and the handling is quick and easy.

Comments about Gitzo GT3541L Series 3 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs:
This tripod is my primary support for our studio portraits. We were using the 2 series but found it to small. This tripod has a much more stable feel with Nikon D3 and 70-200 mounted. I'm especially pleased with the "Anti-Rotatation Leg" system which allows for a quicker set up. We use a Really Right Stuff BU-55 ball head which pairs well.
