Product Highlights
  • Rapid Column
  • Series 2
  • Supports 26.5 lbs (12kg)

The Gitzo GT2531EX 6X Carbon Fiber Explorer Tripod uses advanced "Carbon 6X" carbon fiber material for its leg construction. This improved tubing is stronger, lighter and as resistant as its 12 layer predecessor. Carbon "6X" is manufactured using a complex, 3-D process weaving 6 layers of carbon fiber into smooth, solid constructed tubes.

This tripod incorporates many new ideas in tripod design and offers extreme flexibility. It features individually locking legs that can be fixed at any angle from 0° to 90° and a column that will tilt from the vertical, right over beyond the horizontal and lock solidly at any angle.

The GT2531EX is especially ideal for outdoor macro and nature photography, when used with digital SLRs with 200mm lenses (up to a 300mm maximum), lightweight camcorders, or spotting scopes. It offers an excellent load capacity rating of 26.4 lbs (12kg) and good torsional rigidity.

Anti-Rotation Leg (ALR) System
The Anti-Rotation Leg (ALR) system makes it quick and easy to open and close the tripod. Simply turn all of the locking rings at once and the whole leg can be pulled out in seconds.
Locking Column System
The Explorer is fitted with a column that can tilt from the vertical, beyond the horizontal and lock safely at any angle.
G-Lock Design
The G-Lock mechanism has been completely redesigned in order to achieve a 20% increase in rigidity, faster operation and stronger, safer locking. G-Lock's special design also provides a "gravity lock" effect: the higher the load applied vertically to the leg, the stronger the lock.
Redesigned Upper Discs & Bolts
This tripod features completely redesigned upper discs and bolts. The discs, which are composed of aluminum, feature a safe lock material that reduces vibrations and improves head locking. The improved high-grade stainless steel bolt design prevents it from dropping inside the column when adjusted, and makes controlling the tread length stress-free. The redesigned bolts are also corrosion and oxidation resistant.
1mm Gitzo 6X Carbon Fiber Tube
Gitzo was able to develop a six-crossed multilayer carbon fiber 30 percent lighter than the previous 1.5mm generation that features the same exceptional performance of stability and vibration absorption and unbeatable quality.
Locking Angle System
The explorer incorporates individually locking legs that can be fixed at any angle from 0° to 90°.
Hook
Redesigned built-in, spring-loaded retractable hook on the bottom of the center column provides a place to hang a stabilizing counterweight such as camera, sand or water bags.
Removable Leg Tips
Removable rubber leg tips are interchangeable with Gitzo universal accessories such as the big foot, long spike, etc.
Rapid Column
Grooved Rapid center column for improved stability.

Ok, like camera bags, there are no perfect tripods. This one is a good compromise for what I need, which is a general purpose, carryable, and macro tripod. As a general purpose tripod, it's a little light, as a carryable its a little heavy, and for macro, its superb. As I said a compromise.

Setup time on it is a little longer than my Manfroto, but I'm not in a hurry most times so that's not a problem. The leg hinge lock is taking a little getting used to, I'm used to just pulling them open, with this I have to unlock the legs, set them then lock them. Turns out this makes it pretty easy to set the tripod relatively level quickly. Here's what you do, extend the legs equally to about the height you need. Unlock the hinge on all three. Set the let that will be on the highest piece of ground first, go really wide if you need to. Spread the other two lets out, level the tripod, and then swing the other two legs down and lock. You are pretty close to level even on uneven ground. Takes a little practice, but works nice. If you move it's even easier just pop the locks and adjust.

Only negative is that as a light tripod, and a 4 segment at that, it's not as stiff as I would like. But it does fit diagonally (minus head) inside a rollaboard (definite positive there). It's also folds down pretty tight.

Swing arm is a joy to use compared to the Manfroto, nice being able to pick the angle and have a positive lock.

Why only 4 stars, well as I said it's a compromise tripod, doesn't do anything great, you won't put big glass on it, but it does everything good enough.

If you are packing your gear in your car's trunk and only going where the car can go, it's a good tripod. However, the three section is, I think, too long to pack. Gitzo still makes a four section, but B&H doesn't sell it.

Comments about Gitzo GT2531EX 6X Carbon Fiber Explorer Tripod Legs:

For several years I've been using a Vanguard Alta Pro CT253 tripod but one day several months ago I met another photographer using this same Gitzo and I became somewhat obsessed with getting one. A good run at a local casino gave me the extra cash to get one. Anyway, I love being able to set the leg angles in any position, the height is a few inches taller than the Vanguard so less stooping, the legs are certainly stronger. The center column can also be set at any angle unlike the Vanguard and is sturdier. I did combine this with an Arca Swiss p0 head and it turned out to be a perfect pair. One word of caution: watch your fingers closing it up! Finally, I love the finish on the Gitzo.

Comments about Gitzo GT2531EX 6X Carbon Fiber Explorer Tripod Legs:

I used to own the heavier (non-carbon fiber) version of this tripod. It provided years of solid support and great flexibility. This one provides the same benefits along with the added bonus of being lighter. For outdoor work, I find the Explorers the best and easiest tripods to use.

Comments about Gitzo GT2531EX 6X Carbon Fiber Explorer Tripod Legs:

Things that take some getting used to are 1. Having to unlock the legs every time you want to set it up or move it, the simple get around is don't re-lock the legs when you fold up and move to a new location. 2. No stops or detents of any kind, I will probably make some kind of more visible indicator for a standard start point than the one it comes with. This is really a non-issue because the ground I'm setting up on is never even anyway. I took to setting up without locking the legs until I had the camera in position then used the infinite adjustment and the head pan function to make minor position and level adjustments of the camera then locked the legs. This would be unnecessary if you put the gear head on but I was using a ball head which I put on because it was half the weight of the gear head. I will probably go back and forth depending on shooting conditions (gear head macro & architectural, ball head for landscape). But overall I really like it and its rigid as hell compared to my lightweight Gitzo aluminum model, plus the legs are much easier to operate. And its less than 1/4 the weight of my Gitzo tele-studex compact with R5 head.

Full flexibility of center column and legs that move without detents make this ideal for all types of nature photography. Slows down the picture taking process with all the possible adjustments which is a good thing since that allows the photographer to survey the entire scene.

Comments about Gitzo GT2531EX 6X Carbon Fiber Explorer Tripod Legs:

This is currently my favorite tripod for all-around work in the field. It is tall enough to use for landscapes (though it could be taller), and it is extremely flexible for macro work with flowers. It is light enough that you can carry it all day without really noticing it.

There are a few trade-offs with it tho:

                      * The locks for the legs are not strong enough. When you set it up splayed out (to get close to the ground, or to span a stream), the locks will gently fail and your camera will sag towards the ground.

                      * The feet are always falling off. So far they have only fallen off inside my tripod bag, but some day they will fall off in the field. There should be some sort of lock to keep them from falling off. I strongly recommend you put the tripod in a bag when traveling for this reason.

                      • Because there are only 3 sections, it is rather long when collapsed, making more awkward to carry in the field. This also means that it will not fit into carry-on luggage for a flight.

                      * But, of course, having only 3 sections makes it stronger and more convenient to use.

I love it in spite of the issues above.

Comments about Gitzo GT2531EX 6X Carbon Fiber Explorer Tripod Legs:

I bought the GT2531EX two years ago and I have used it frequently under different conditions.

It was bought to replace the prior Gitzo G1227Mk2 with the center column ripped off and replaced by a Kirk base to best stability and flexibility to reach (near) ground level positioning. I was satisfied with the tripod and very satisfied with Gitzo service and post sale, but I was looking for more flexibility for my increasing interest on macro Photography.

For my surprise I discover the new G2531EX with column at lower position was significantly steadier than my previous setup. Even with the column completely extended vertically the stability was very better than I was expecting: no worries for occasional extension of the center column to get better positioning with basic care (mirror lock up, remote and some weight over the camera and lens combo).

I can add stability to the set up just using the included hook to attach my backpack. Very useful when the support ground is not so stable or the wind is more than a breeze...

The flexibility offered by the column mechanism is a joy for camera positioning when trying odd positioning, mainly when close to ground level. I cannot express how surprise I was to find it satisfactory steady even at that odd positioning. Much better than I was expecting for!

At 2,020g including Acratech ball head it is not heavy to tempt me to "forget" it at home. I use it frequently on diverse conditions: on the sand, into streams, in muddy, and even into salty water a couple of times (followed by a shower with potable water). Plenty satisfied.

It is very easy to disassemble the legs – even I never really felt the need to do that.

As my previous experience, this tripod also supports very well abuse from regular use. No need to work with it like surgical complex equipment, but certainly I would not recommend to use it like a hammer, despite I read about people using it with grizzlies…

                          I strongly recommend this item.

Comments about Gitzo GT2531EX 6X Carbon Fiber Explorer Tripod Legs:

I'm a Gitzo guy so this is my 4th Gitzo in my career which spans over 25 years. I got it for the flexibility with the boom arm and legs which can be set at any angle. I've only had it for a few weeks but so far it is doing the job. I have yet to find a tripod position that only this tripod can do and not any of the other tripods I have in my possession but this one can get into the needed position much much faster. Also, I know the day will come soon enough where only this tripod can get my camera where I want it to be...that is the reason I bought this tripod in the first place.
It is incredibly light, especially compared to my Studex which weighs...I don't know but a lot. It is so light it gives me pause but the images have been coming out fine so I guess I worry too much. I do notice that when you tap the the camera with your finger, it sure seems to bounce a lot but of course, I let the tripod settle before taking the image. I don't know if this is all part of the dampening system of the carbon fiber but in any case, the images are sharp. I do put a Boa bag pellet bag as a weight from the center post. I'm not crazy about having to carry the Boa bag but whatever. You definitely will need a counter weight when using the boom arm anyway.
The "G" locks work as advertised, which is to say, they work well.
I like the notches in the boom arm so it will lock in position when boomed. The complaint about the leg tips unscrewing and falling off hasn't been experienced or even noticed as an issue. I am a little concerned that the metal hook on the center post for the counter weight may break off as it doesn't look very strong but all is well for now. I'm not crazy about the fact that you can't just close up the legs super quickly and move to another location but that goes with the package deal as that is why the legs can be put in any position. You have to unlock the leg snap locks and then close up the legs versus just closing up the legs with my normal Gitzo's...a small thing and no biggie, just something to get used to. This thing would be great for landscape guys who hike but alas, that isn't me....I'm a commercial guy who likes to tweak a camera into places it probably shouldn't go but this Gitzo gets me there. Happy Trails!

Easy to set up and use, especially in uneven or difficult terrain. Very steady. Cannot be use in salt water. I live near the ocean. For this reason, I deducted one star.

Comments about Gitzo GT2531EX 6X Carbon Fiber Explorer Tripod Legs:

A landscape photographer primarily, I use a tripod for most of my images. I have tried a number of metal, wood, and carbon fiber tripods. I turned to Gitzo because of its reputation and my experience with its bigger units when I shot only large format.
I turned to the Explorer because it has the totally variable leg spread. I loved this feature in some wooden tripods I own.
But the Explorer series has the stability and strength of those other units, the benefitbof signicant less weight and for me the important versatile leg spread. I like being able to spread and lock the legs where I want them, not at preset points.
This unit does all that and most importantly supports my dslr with lenses ranging from extreme wide angle to 300 mm telephoto.
For long exposures or multiple exposures where HDR is required the GT 2531ex is as stable as could be. I know perfection in any tool is a dream, but this tripod comes very close.

Comments about Gitzo GT2531EX 6X Carbon Fiber Explorer Tripod Legs:

Comments about Gitzo GT2531EX 6X Carbon Fiber Explorer Tripod Legs:

GREAT tripod. the leg locks are wonderful. not only is this tripod the nicest one I have used but the thoughtfulness with which it was designed is second to none. I was worried going from Manfrotto to the Gitzo's twist locks but after only a day of using it I find it to be as good or better in some circumstances then the Manfrotto locks. The fully independant legs are fantastic and despite what the page may say. you can get this all the way flat to the ground which is fantastic for shooting ground or low angles.

Now for the dislike. the only thing I really found to be poor quality was the supplied leg lock tension adjuster "Wrench". The wrench broke after trying to loosen the tension a tad. I had to use a socket wrench out of my tool box to adjust it.
But other then that I cant find a flaw it is absolutely a fantastic product.

Comments about Gitzo GT2531EX 6X Carbon Fiber Explorer Tripod Legs:

Very sturdy and rigid legs. I've been using Manfrotto 055CLB legs for the last 5 years and went for these legs to enable easier positioning of the camera for macro work. The multiple position centre column is excellent and very flexible as are the legs that can be set to any angle. Setting up these legs is slightly fiddlier than the Manfrotto as each leg must be set individually. No more using my feet to kick the legs out to the first stop. This is a minor inconvenience. These legs are marginally longer than the 055 legs but a little lighter. Overall build quality is excellent.
