I prefer to use a tripod for night photography, multi-shot panoramas, and HDR exposures requiring multiple takes at the precise same framing. Sometimes I just need a tripod for landscape shots at very small apertures. For years, I have been making do with off-brand compact tripods. Within a year or two of use, the tightening knobs and column gears on these cheap models always wore out. They also never seemed to be light enough for extended carrying. That's why I finally turned to a professional carbon fiber tripod.

The Manfrotto 190CX3 is the answer to my needs! The folded size is about as small as possible for a full-sized tripod. I use it with the Manfrotto #484 Mini Ball head. Together, they are ultra-light and adequately stable. I'll never go back to those old cheap tripods. The 190CX3 is ideal for carrying on long hikes. Using a shoulder strap, I can even carry it while riding a bike. The twist-levers on the legs and head are quick and easy to adjust, and they have an iron grip. I've never had a tripod with legs that adjust to independent angles, but I quickly learned to appreciate this advantage. With the ball head, I can put my camera into any angle I want in seconds. I also like the ability to remove the center column when I don't need it.

This is a pretty stable tripod, but if it's windy enough, I'm sure it will shake. The inclusion of a hook at the center is brilliant. I can hang my camera bag there for additional stability. The only thing that would make this model better is retractable spiked feet.

An absolute gem, but it arrived with quite a flaw!

I set it up on arrival and played with it in the dining room. It was everything I'd hoped for - simply the best all round tripod I've ever owned, and I've owned a few. Light, rock steady, quick to erect and collapse away.

On it's first outing, It was fine for the first two locations shooting 1 minute time exposures with infrared and 10 stop ND filters on the seashore. However, the third stop off, I set it up on a quay at sunset - what happened, the leg dropped off and bits flew everywhere! I was lucky, there was a lull in the wind so I retrieved all the bits. Back home I realised one of the allen bolts had not been tightened up fully so when I pulled the leg out it all dropped apart. Lucky my camera wasn't attached at the time is all I can say. I bought an imperial 1/8 inch allen key and rebuilt the leg - its fine now (that is I think it is - I haven't tried it yet).

The motto for all buyers - check the bolts are not dangerously loose as was my experience. I've given this tripod 2 stars for obvious reasons, but if it wasn't for this shocker of an experience, I'd rate it five stars - it is actually a very, very good tripod.

Comments about Manfrotto 190CX3 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I bought these tripod legs to fit into airline luggage bags without adding much weight. It's very good for that. My only complaint is that someone 6 feet tall (me) has to bend over a lot to look into the camera viewfinder unless the center column is extended. Since it's so light, it's not rock solid in wind with the column extended. If you're tall, look at the Manfrotto 055CXPro4. I've had good luck with Bogen/Manfrotto for 25 years.

This is a superb hybrid at a great price. While it isn't THE lightest or THE most stable, it's not possible to have both. This tripod it is a great combination of the two. The leg locks are easy on the fingers.

Comments about Manfrotto 190CX3 Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Used mostly on 'run & gun' video gigs so its light weight and relative compactness are major pluses. Easily supports regular sized DSLRs and 70-200mm lens. I have it paired with the Manfrotto Mini Video Head, and its a great combo. 2 minor cons: no 'legwarmers' (it gets pretty cold here in Chicago!) and no bag included.

I purchased the Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod because of its light-weight for hiking and general use. It has exceeded my expectations and I look forward to using it for many years to come. It is solid, well constructed and simple to use. I would highly recommend this model to anyone having the same requirements.

I have a little over a year of light use and one of the leg extensions comes compleatly out of the tube. It could be sent in for repair but honestly that is an expense that should not be my responsibility. Love the weight and its stable w/o the extension up. Will likely go with something better next time.

SUPER LIGHT and just so rock solid for the lightness!! I put a 701 head on it for my mk3 and it is super sweet! If you are like me and were using the old school 501 503 head on the old aluminum legs, kill that set up and reduce the weight by 2 or three tons :)

Really just do it. The only thing you will miss is that the legs alone will not extend anywhere near as high as the old larger heavier legs but that is a benefit when you go to store the legs and carry them around. I use these in the sand and they hold up fabu. Unreal price too. Just can't say enough great things really!

Using this tripod with 501 Video Head (Part of BH package). A Deal with a capital D! The 190cx3 holds our D7000 rig(monitor, rail, etc..)with no stability issues, even when panning with the 501 head. This carbon fiber tripod works as well as our other tripod, which costs twice as much.It has served us well in our film production. I bought this after weeks of research, which yielded nothing that can top this package.

I was very surprised to find the Horizontal Center Column feature this will be very cool for copy work. I have been using an older version of these legs for a few years and I am very happy with them as well. I use a 501 head on them and it is a good match, great legs and a good head.

It was smaller than I was expecting, but it is light and the low angle adapter is great for low shots.

The head I am using makes it a bit top heavy, so I recommend smaller heads.

Wont work as an outside tripod in iceland, far to unstable unless you use the elastic rope and caribena trick.

Great tripod, have had it for about 2 weeks now and absolutely love it. It is a great superlight base (not the aboslute lightest though) and I combined it with the 054 Magnesium Ball Head. The combo is gray but would recommend buying the spiked feet the put on the bottom.

Ultimate solution for affordable and lightweight tripod for hiker. Your tripod weight is not important while travelling by car, but when you get out and take backpack, equipment and everything else on your back that starts matter.
