Product Highlights
  • For Canon EOS
  • Zoom Telephoto
  • Compatible w/Sigma APO Teleconverters

This Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM APO Lens is an ultra telephoto zoom lens ideal for nature/outdoor or sports photography. It has a minimum focusing distance of 59.1" (150cm) throughout the entire zoom range and has a maximum magnification of 1:4.2 making it useful for close-up photography.

The OS (Optical Stabilizer) system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 3-4 stops faster. This allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions.

The use of the OS (Optical Stabilizer) system, HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), APO apochromatic design, three elements of SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass, and multicoated optics all enable this lens to provide a high level of performance throughout its entire zoom range, as well as versatility. A rear focus system insures quick, convenient manual focus and a non-rotating front barrel.

The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance, while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration, which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

By adding the optional Sigma APO teleconverter, you can use this lens as a 168-560mm f/6.3-8 manual focus ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a 1.4X EX teleconverter, or as a 240-800mm f/9-11 manual focus ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a 2X teleconverter.

The OS system uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera. It works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake. It automatically detects movement of the camera and compensates for camera shake when shooting moving subject such as motor sports.
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) system ensures quiet and high-speed auto focusing with full time manual focus override.
Three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements provide excellent correction for chromatic aberration.
Super Multi Layer (SML) coating reduces ghost and flare.
The lens design incorporates an inner focusing system, which prevents the front of the lens from rotating, thereby making it particularly suitable for use with circular polarizing filters and petal shaped lens hoods.

I purchased this lens primarily to shoot sporting events and wildlife/nature images which is not my everyday forte. I had some concerns based on some of the comments about the quality of the image. But since this is not a lens I would commonly use, the price was more attractive to me than the equivalent Canon L. I love the lens. The lens OS works very well. I was able to take acceptably sharp handheld shots at sunset in warm low light. The AF is acceptably accurate, fast and relatively quiet. I love the bokeh it produces at wide aperture. In my opinion if you want a reasonably priced long telephoto zoom that produces very fine images, this lens is a great value. Images attached are from a recent pro bono shoot for the local Saint Bernard Rescue and was my first attempt with the lens.

This lens appears to be constructed very well. The zoom and focus rings work nicely - not too tight or loose. The included carrying case, straps, and lens hood are also appreciated. The lens performance, however, is not all that great. I am a hobby shooter and don't have super expectations for crisp shots, but I am not able to get many sharp shots with this lens. At the lower zooms - to about 200 - it is pretty decent. Sharpness here is close to my 70-200 F4 Canon lens - and the OS on the Sigma helps at slower speeds. The two main problems with this lens are soft focus at 400 and when wide open (4.5 at 120 and 5.6 at 400). In my test and field shots I noticed a fuzzy halo around bright objects when shooting wide open - making the faster end of this lens not useful. Also, at the full 400 - even with OS on or using a tripod - I have not been able to capture anything all that sharp. I find that I am almost always shooting close to 400, so this is a little disappointing. Now, I did not think I would get L performance at this price and I don't plan on becoming a pro with this lens - but I still think I could have put together something better for a little more money and could get better shots. The other options are the Canon 400 5.6 and Canon 300 4 with a 1.4x extender - both would add about [$]over the cost of the Sigma, though. Above that - Canon 300 2.8 etc - the costs are pretty prohibitive to hobby shooters. I think the lens is great for the money but don't expect more than what you are paying for

I was looking to get the same the of product but in Canon. After reading reviews and opiniond from pros, i bought this lens at significant lower cost. I am a normal person who loves photography. I am super happy with the lens. Yes it is heavy. And shooting on rainy or dark days is a challenge.

Comments about Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens:

I was impressed with the construction of this unit. It was solid, albeit a bit heavy, and operated smoothly. Auto-focus and image stabilization worked well. Image quality was quite sharp from 120mm - 300mm, but then got a bit soft from there out to 400mm. I photograph wildlife, especially eagles, and spend most of my time in the 300 - 400mm neighborhood. I need something sharper in this range. I have run into a few folks who own the Sigma 50 - 500 and love it. They, and most reviews, say it is pretty sharp throughout it's range. I got to try one out the other day and was pretty impressed. Returned this lens with an eye to picking up the 50 - 500 in the near future.

Just returned from Yellowstone and captured incredible pictures with my new Sigma 120-400mm lens. I opted for this lens many times over my 75-200mm lens for pictures of wildlife in the park at winter time. It handled cold temperatures well. I am so anxious to use it especially this summer in outdoor sporting events.

The reach of my 300mm lens just wasn't enough so I did the homework and decided on the Sigma 120-400. I've used it for sports and nature shots both hand held and on a tripod / monopod and find it lives up to the reviews. My bottom line is it's a great lens for the $, very pleased.

I am very pleased with this lens by Sigma. True it is heavy but it is what one would expect. I have not used it a lot yet as the weather has been too wet. That is why I ranked it four stars. Because it is not weather sealed.
I have enclosed a picture taken with the lens at almost full out taken on a rocking boat and hand held.

It seemed to be a "higer quality" lens than a kit lens.... Tested it out in different lighting situations. The image stablization was great though. However, I've had kit lenses with better image quality out the box.It also had really bad zoom creep that I could not deal with. Not sure if it was me or the lens. Either way I returned and for a Cannon 300mm f/4 becuase it was only $200 more than this lens.

I love shooting candids and wildlife. I was iffy about putting anything other than Canon lenses on my 60D, as I was told it was a bad idea.

After reading other reviews I decided I would go for it and purchase this lens.

Yes, its heavy and does take some getting used to at first, but I am very happy with this purchase.

What I like most is that I didn't lose any clarity at 400mm.

I will certainly go with Sigma again.

Comments about Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens:

Bought this lens about a month ago; I needed a little further reach than my 75-300mm lens. I took it out for a test drive for the first time today. It being for wildlife shooting, I selected a day not so ideal weather; cloudy, rather dark, handholding the camera, shooting at 400mm, Auto focus combined with Manual (!), OS1 on (did not use OS2 for panning). The results were very acceptable. (see sample, taken about 100 feet away). I was concerned about lens' focusing speed (hunting) from the previous reviewer's comments, yes, when shooting distance changes dramatically, the lens hesitates. This can be quickly corrected by facilitating the manual focus ring. So long the lens is focused in the same general area, focus is quick.

Comments about Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens:

Plan to use for wildlife but haven't had a chance. Test from my kitchen doorway aimed at a sycamore treetop of about 500 feet away on a tripod with OS OFF, cloudy, low light situation, shows the resulting image quite satisfactorily. Heard about slow hunting from the previous reviewer, but only until the lens is accustomed to a very long target. Amazing feature about this lens is that when the focusing distance changes drastically, a little help from the manual focusing ring adjustment can be had. I have not had any lens that does this. With my other zoom lenses once they're set for AF, manual focusing ring is locked. Once you are in the general area, focusing is quick. At 400mm it is acceptably sharp. Since I haven't done any wildlife shooting, handholding the camera, my review so far is not conclusive.
The only negative part of this lens is that it is quite heavy. I knew exactly how much it weighed before purchasing, so this is not a complaint.

Comments about Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens:

I treated myself to a longer lens for my camera. This was suggested by the staff at B&H, sorry, I don't remember the gentleman that helped me. This lens is just what I wanted. I can get the longer shots, and still have the rest of the field in focus. I was able to get some great shots on a Lighthouse challenge. Some of were of the lighthouse, but I also got some great shots of wildlife. Very happy with the suggestion for this lens. Will be back for other equipment.

Purchased from B&H in 2010 - this lens is sharp for most of it's range - distortions are minor and can be addressed in POST - it's heavy, the zoom requires a lens extension that is extensive vs internal so expect that - the only con I can see is the AF system HUNTS - esp if the subject is not high contrast - used on a 5D Mkii and 40D - hunts on both cameras - you can improve the AF performance considerably by NOT USING A FILTER - I have top of the line HOYA and SIGMA filters and they both increase Hunting for AF. Same filters used on my Sigma F2.8 70-200 (77mm) don't bother the 70-200 AF at all.

Purchased this Sigma lens for my Canon 60D several weeks ago and used it sparingly until yesterday. Took dozens of images of F-16 fighter aircraft actively useing a live fire range. The action was fast and furious and non stop. Most of my shots were at full 400mm and this lens performed flawlessly! AF was quick, locked on and stayed locked on. The auto drive is super. ISO set at 200 and all images are tack sharp. I couldn't ask for a more satisfying experience from this lens. It's heavy, not for the faint of heart, but it's big lens!!
