Product Highlights
  • Zoom Telephoto
  • Compatible w/Sigma APO Teleconverters

This Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM APO Lens is an ultra telephoto zoom lens ideal for nature/outdoor or sports photography. This translates into an equivalent range of 180-600mm when used with a Nikon digital SLR camera.

The OS (Optical Stabilizer) system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 3-4 stops faster. This allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions.

The use of the OS (Optical Stabilizer) system, HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), APO apochromatic design, three elements of SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass, and multicoated optics all enable this lens to provide a high level of performance throughout its entire zoom range, as well as versatility. A rear focus system insures quick, convenient manual focus and a non-rotating front barrel.

The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance, while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration, which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

By adding the optional Sigma APO teleconverter, you can use this lens as a 168-560mm f/6.3-8 manual focus ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a 1.4X EX teleconverter, or as a 240-800mm f/9-11 manual focus ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a 2X teleconverter.

Note! HSM lenses, while able to manually focus with all Nikon F-mount cameras, will not autofocus with certain older film AF cameras. This is the same limitation as with Nikon's own AF-S lenses. Incompatible models are: N60, N55, N8008/s, N6006, N5005, N4004 & N2020.

The OS system uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera. It works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake. It automatically detects movement of the camera and compensates for camera shake when shooting moving subject such as motor sports.
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) system ensures quiet and high-speed auto focusing with full time manual focus override.
Three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements provide excellent correction for chromatic aberration.
Super Multi Layer (SML) coating reduces ghost and flare.
The lens design incorporates an inner focusing system, which prevents the front of the lens from rotating, thereby making it particularly suitable for use with circular polarizing filters and petal shaped lens hoods.

Ordered from B & H three days prior to a mid-March Florida mini-vacation. As a baseball fan, I was snapping razor sharp action photos at two Philadelphia spring training games with ease. The optical stabilization and sturdy monopod kept erratic movements in check. It' a nice balance when coupled to the D-90 with MB 80 battery pack. That extra grip is a benefit when hand holding is essential. It isn't a light weight combo and will never fall into a general purpose application. One should anticipate that fact. Haven't experienced the lens 'creep' others have described. Also got some GREAT pictures of the full moon. Much more detail than expected when images were enlarged for viewing. I'm NEVER removing the quick release plate from the collar. The included protective case does the job. If SIGMA is listening, a small exterior zip pocket to store incidental goodies would be a nice touch. Be sure to buy another memory card with this lens . . . . YOU'RE GONNA NEED IT!

    Good value lens from sigma

First of all you need to know that you need a tripod, and a good one otherwise don't even bother to make the investment.

I use this lens for nature photography. The few photos I have taken are quite impressive, very sharp, even at 100% crop. You do need to be very accurate with the focus point. I have not yet had a chance to check out the continuous autofocus for moving animals.

I use this lens for Birds & It will focus fast enough for a Hummingbird hovering. Fastest focusing lens I have owned & that's what I was looking for. It's fairly heavy but that helps damp out the tremors & the OS is very good.

I purchased this lens because of good revues.
I needed a lens which would focus quick enough to catch a Hummingbird in flight & sharp enough to print a large picture 13x19. I was pleased to see the results. It focuses FAST & it is Sharp. Shoot wide open f-stop 1,000 th second or faster & you'll get a good photo. Love this lens !

Like anything I end up buying, I do lots of research before making my final decision and the purchase of this lens being no different. This is my first major telephoto lens purchase and am not regretting it one bit. So far the lens has performed exceptionally well, the images are sharp, autofocus is fast. This is the lens that stays on my camera most of the time and did I mention how well built this thing is, the mounting ring is very stout and I have no worries about this lens detaching from the mount in any way. all the images taken so far have been top notch. Hope this helps anyone out there.

i purchased this lens to replace an older version of the same lens. it is considerably larger than the old version but balances well regardless of size and heft. focus is very quick and mostly accurate, i will guess that the accuracy will improve with more use as i have only used the lens on 8 occasions. it has been a bit of a tweek to have to zoom the lens in the opposite direction of nikon lenses, its not easy to change something that is a reflex when shooting. seems very well constructed, very nice finish. great handle/tripod collar, really nice for carrying the lens camera combo. definatly worth the money.

Grabbed it on Auction site for [$]. yeah, I stole it! Since then I have used it to shoot sports, Portraits and landscapes. I use it all the time! It is a heavy mother, But I use a tripod or Mono mostly. Excellent sharpness when you use a tripod. It is just to heavy for holding it. Color is great, But it is a little too soft wide open, for my taste, So I rarely go all the way to 400.

Comments about Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

This is a great lens for the money. I use it for birds on my D7000. Its consistant and focuses fairly quickly. Even wide open at 400mm and f/5.6 the photos come out very nice, some, at extreme distances are soft but the majority are good. Also the lens feels sturdy and durable but itsnot weather proof.

O.K. first up I have barely used the lens I would like to be able to return in a year and see how my thoughts are then. Having said that I saw before purchasing, some good some great reviews from real people using this lense professionally and thrilled with it. Its performance is amazing, I just tried it out at 400mm indoors at 1/30 sec hand held ISO1600 on my new nikon D7000 and it is crazily sharp. The kind of rubber black finish is very good too, easy to grip but not in any way sticky. The OS system is as good as any if not better and I cant wait to do more with the lense. [...]Great tripod mount balances well too. Thanks

Comments about Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

My main wildlife lens was a 70-300mm VR, which has been giving me mechanical problems, so out of frustration I decided to give this one a go. All I can say I was stupid to wait this long in getting it.

This lens once stopped down to f7.1 is like a razor - very sharp, with maximum sharpness in the f8.0 range. To be honest it really surprised me - it's actually sharper than my 70-300vr which I consider to be a very crisp lens. Just as shocking though was how soft it is wide open, but this problem really only surfaces once you go past 300mm, and for the price it is to be expected.

The OS system is fantastic - I've gotten nice sharp photos at 1/60 of a second hand held, and the stabilization kicks in fast. I also found the focus tracking to be excellent (D7000), as well as quick to acquire the target as long as the focus is close in distance.

The only real cons are that I've found is the occasional focus lockup - it's hasn't happened often but sometimes it just gives up and I have to release the shutter and try again or grab the focus ring and get it close. It is also a heavy, but I can't really complain since that the nature of all lenses like this.

All in all, I'm very pleased with this lens, and for the budget birder/wildlife shooter this is a great lens to have in the arsenal.
