Product Highlights
  • Zoom Super Telephoto
  • Compatible w/Sigma APO Teleconverters

This Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Lens is an ultra telephoto zoom lens ideal for nature, wildlife, or sports photography. This zoom range translates into an equivalent range of 240-800mm when used with a Canon digital SLR camera with an APS-C sensor.

The OS (Optical Stabilizer) system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 3-4 stops faster. This allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions.

The use of the OS (Optical Stabilizer) system, HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), APO apochromatic design, three elements of SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass, and multicoated optics all enable this lens to provide a high level of performance throughout its entire zoom range, as well as versatility. A rear focus system insures quick, convenient manual focus and a non-rotating front barrel.

The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance, while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration, which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

By adding the optional Sigma APO teleconverter, you can use this lens as a 210-700mm f/7-9 manual focus ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a 1.4X EX teleconverter, or as a 300-1000mm f/10-13 manual focus ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a 2X teleconverter.

The OS system uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera. It works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake. It automatically detects movement of the camera and compensates for camera shake when shooting moving subject such as motor sports.
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) system ensures quiet and high-speed auto focusing with full time manual focus override.
Three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements provide excellent correction for chromatic aberration.
Super Multi Layer (SML) coating reduces ghost and flare.

After quite a bit of research into wildlife reaching lenses, I purchased this Sigma lens. It had been nearly thirty years since my last Sigma purchase, keeping now days to the Canon name lenses. I have now had this Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO lens over six months, and I am still in love with its performance. Granted it is not the 500mm f/4 II prime Canon lens, but it is a fair substitute, and at one tenth the price. The images are sharp, with good bokeh, and acceptable focusing speed. My copy leans perhaps 15% warm in it's color rendition, yet seldom needs any chromatic aberration correction. I find it helpful, not unlike the Canon 100-400mm zoom, to aid this lens into the focusing "ballpark" , near focus verses far focus, to help quicken acquisition of the auto focus. This lens does not have a switch setting for this, so one must do this manually, but it will significantly decrease searching. Where as the Canon 500mm f/4L II weights in at a little over seven pounds, the Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 weights only four and a fifth pounds; so at two-thirds the weight, I find the Sigma much easier to handhold for a short duration. I do increase my keepers significantly though with the use of a mono-pod, and can frequently push my exposure times down to the 1/160 to 1/125th second mark with the OS on. All in all, I consider this lens one of my best purchases in years. Now to study up on the new Sigma 300-800mm verses the Canon 800mm prime.

Pros: Very nice range and OS gets you 4 stops or so when it's working. Lens sharpens up nicely by f/8 on the long end. It is well-built and has EX-grade finish (although not officially an EX lens). The ring HSM is not as responsive as my Sigma 100-300, but is largely adequate considering the focal range of the lens. It tracks large birds quite nicely and has a high keeper rate for such shots. It also has very nice minimum focusing distance which seems to provide 1:3 to 1:4 magnification at 500mm. It can give reasonable images with Sigma's 1.4x TC, but the 2x TC really isn't suitable (except in times of desperation, perhaps).

Cons: The OS seems to be unstable. Sometimes it activates and works as it's supposed to (within about 1 second), while other times it does not seem to engage or will engage then drop the OS. I will likely send mine in to have Sigma take a look at it. The focus is very nice in good lighting (but not excellent), but will hunt in poor lighting at the long end. The zoom lock is a bit finicky - you have to be exactly in the right spot for it to engage and it's not the minimum turn.

Overall: If Sigma can rectify the OS issue, then I would give this lens a 4 to 5-star rating. I am hopeful that they will be able to do so; otherwise I'm a bit disappointed in it. It's not what I expected compared to my other Sigma lenses (and I own 7 others).

Comments about Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I have been using the 150-500 Sigma lens to photograph wildlife -- monkeys, exotic birds, lizards, etc. It is great. The image stabilization is amazing and it works really well even with low light. Although it is a heavy lens I have been able to do most of my shooting without a monopod.

Comments about Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I am a Nature and sports photographer that has been looking for a good lens that would not break the bank. This lens allows me to go out for the long shot when I want to play around and get away from the normal 300 and in shots. The glass is clean with no noticeable vignetting. The auto focus could be a bit quieter and faster but I am used to shooting L series glass normally.

I use this lens for wildlife and landscape photography. Gives me the ability to take sharper and close-up shots that can be cropped even closed with extremely fine details. Have taken on a 3 mile hike (which does get a little heavy) and have taken most photos without a tripod. Only con is the weight on long hikes. Recommend.

Comments about Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I used this lens for bird photography and had purchased it after selling my Canon 100 -400. The B&H return policy is excellent so I sent it back and purchased the new Canon 100 -400, which I will use with a teleconverter.

The Sigma lens is relatively light weight, appears sturdy but I was disappointed with my bird shots - they just didn't POP!

Comments about Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I got this lens just prior to taking a trip to Borneo. I first took it to the zoo as a warmup exercise and was really happy with the results. It is a big and heavy lens though, with cheap-ish casing and there is no getting around that. In comparison the Canon 100-400 f4-5.6 is much more compact, is lighter, and has a more rugged build. I would probably recommend that lens over this one for backpacking photographers. But its also twice as expensive. As far as photo quality output I was able to get just as good of shots, though the Canon might be a bit better in fading light conditions. It is also very comparable in quality to the Tamron 150-600 f5-6.3. Good focus, decent bokeh, no problems with chromatic aberration. Basically it is hard to complain about the photographic results of this lens for the price, assuming you use it as this sort of lens is meant to be used. If you're not sure about image quality then I'd check out samples on pixelpeeper online. That helped settle the issue for me.

Comments about Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

This is a very good lens for the price. I use it for daytime soccer. Too slow for nighttime sports and too long for most sports (even at 150mm)unless you only want small area (chest & head). Idea for soccer 90% of the time. Entire field can be covered.Lens is heavy and I always use a monopod.
Have not used it for any landscape shots but expect it to be very good for stills. Didn't notice any flaws that couldn't be corrected by PP. may have some lengths that are not tack sharp but that has not become an issue.

Great lens! Image stabilization works great for handheld photos. Lens is heavy, but what do you expect with a telescope on the front of the camera? I managed to hold it for a few days getting pictures of R/C aircraft, wildlife, whatever else I felt like shooting. Works great for everything.

I have not had had chance to fully try out this lens but my initial test shots were nice and sharp. The lens is heavy but you could still hand hold it for short amounts of time. I got this to replace my Canon 100-400mm as I wanted more reach for bird photography and I like that the lens is a twist to extend rather than the trombone like action of the 100-400 which was always frustrating to use.

Comments about Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

To start doing bird photography, even in my back yard, I needed something that would consistently focus. My 70-200 f/4 L was sharp but not long enough. Adding a 2x teleconverter required manual focus. My hit rate was very poor. I decided to go with this lens as one of the least expensive avenues to get to length and autofocus. I've only had it a couple of weeks, so can't speak to durability.

My hit rate has increased quite a bit. I still have a number of photos not quite sharp, but I'm marking that down to poor technique so far. One person saw some chromatic aberration. When I brighten some images, I think I do detect some greenish tint in the white areas.

The Robin shot attached is hand held (!) at 1/320 second and 500MM. I was astonished that it came out sharp (f/8, 640 ISO) aperture priority.

Size and focal length makes a tripod a near necessity. The focus ring is placed under the tripod mounting bracket, making it a bit difficult to get to. Moving it futher out might make it completely inaccesible as this is a very long lens when zoomed out.

Very good for wildlife, birding and I used it at my granddaughters soccer game. It is heavy, but you should know that when you buy it.

Comments about Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:

I have been exceptionally pleased with how well this lens has been working for me. It is very much a budget compromise lens, and the f/6.3 at the long end has made it painfully difficult to use at times due to lack of light. I strongly suggest this lens with a monopod. Shooting hand held is still workable, and its implementation of image stabilization compensates very nicely, but will wear on you over time, and shooting too close to dusk or dawn will become even harder to work with.

Very little use for indoor shooting of anything but still objects or subjects that work well with panning.
