Product Highlights
  • Zoom Super Telephoto
  • Compatible w/Sigma APO Teleconverters

This Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Lens is an ultra telephoto zoom lens ideal for nature, wildlife, or sports photography. This zoom range translates into an equivalent range of 225-750mm when used with a Nikon DX digital SLR camera with an APS-C size sensor.

The OS (Optical Stabilizer) system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 3-4 stops faster. This allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions.

The use of the OS (Optical Stabilizer) system, HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), APO apochromatic design, three elements of SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass, and multicoated optics all enable this lens to provide a high level of performance throughout its entire zoom range, as well as versatility. A rear focus system insures quick, convenient manual focus and a non-rotating front barrel.

The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance, while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration, which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

By adding the optional Sigma APO teleconverter, you can use this lens as a 210-700mm f/7-9 manual focus ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a 1.4X EX teleconverter, or as a 300-1000mm f/10-13 manual focus ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a 2X teleconverter.

Note! HSM lenses, while able to manually focus with all Nikon F-mount cameras, will not autofocus with certain older film AF cameras. This is the same limitation as with Nikon's own AF-S lenses. Incompatible models are: N60, N55, N8008/s, N6006, N5005, N4004 & N2020.

The OS system uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera. It works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake. It automatically detects movement of the camera and compensates for camera shake when shooting a moving subject such as motor sports.
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) system ensures quiet and high-speed auto focusing with full time manual focus override.
Three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements provide excellent correction for chromatic aberration.
Super Multi Layer (SML) coating reduces ghost and flare.

The one star reviews had me worried. Having used the lens for over a month I am extremely pleased with the results. I do hand-held shots of birds perched and in flight, and of the 500 photos I have taken only a couple have been rejected due to lens limitations. Good lighting is required. This lens gives me results that I could not have obtained with my Nikon 18-200 mm lens. One photo has an Eastern Phoebe with a bug in its bill and is crystal sharp. In good lighting I usually shoot at 1/1000 second to stop action in flight.. The very fast focus makes it possible to find and photograph birds in flight. The price is more than "right". Of course, other wildlife has been photographed with the same results. The lens is obviously heavy, and I recommend an extra support strap.

Nice lens at a nice price. Focus not as sharpe as I would like. Auto focus a little slow especially shooting moving animals.

It took me a while to decide to purchase this lens. I take a number of pictures that require a reach and I was hoping this lens would be the one.

It is a great lens. I am happy with the quality of the pictures it takes.

The drawbacks have been outlined in previous reviews. It's really big. It's really heavy. And it's a little slow.

I will use it 90% of the time on my tripod. Glad I purchased it. A lot of the money.

          Great lens, great price

Comments about Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

After trying a few times to get a 2x teleconverter for my Nikon D5300 I was advised by a sales rep at B&H that a teleconverter would not work with my Nikon camera and lens set up. I contacted Nikon next and was told that was true, but they would gladly send me a list of Nikon lenses I could buy for a teleconverter or a Nikon 400 mm lens I could buy. I read reviews and decided on the Sigma 150 - 500 mm lens. Although the lens is to big for my camera bag it comes with a great case to hold it in. I have tried the lens in low light (dusk) handheld and photo's of the moon (tripod) and am greatly impressed pictures are clear and sharp. I have always bought Nikon camera's and lenses but I would not hesitate to buy a Sigma lens in the future for a lot less than a similar Nikon lens. And as for Nikon camera's after this episode I am not sure. B&H was great to deal with on returning my teleconverters and when I ordered my Sigma lens.

If you've never used a big lens before then the size is a bit startling. Once you get used to handling a large lens it handles well and looks very well put together.
I'm using it with a Nikon D5300 and it mates up easily and takes very nice pictures out to the full 500mm (on my crop sensor it's a 750mm equivalent) Focus is quick and accurate and the lens is sharp.

I enjoy taking photos of wildlife and wanted to get a little closer to my subjects, but didn't have the money for a prime lens from Nikon so I purchased this one.
Although it does get me closer to my subjects I find it must be used with a monopod or tripod for best results.
I would recommend this lens for someone on a budget, but if you can wait I'd save up for the comparable Nikon 80-400.

Be sure to contact B&H when ordering to make sure you're shipped a lens with the newest firmware from Sigma. Those lenses with the newest firmware have a sticker on the box saying it's "D5300 Compatible." Without the newest firmware the autofocus and OS will not work properly with the D5300. Sigma will provide the firmware update for free, you just have to pay to ship the lens to them in NY. You can read more about the firmware issue here: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/article/information-regarding-the-nikon-d5300-cameras.

Comments about Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

I've only had this lens a short time but I am totally pleased with it. I enjoy photographing birds and other wildlife. The shots are crisp and clear. Although it is a bit heavier than I expected it is easy to compensate for the weight. I highly recommend this lens.

Comments about Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM APO Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

The Sigma 150-500 f5-6.3 autofocus lens on my crop sensor D7000 has an effective focal length of 225-750 mm and I use it 95% of the time fully zoomed out for shooting Hawaii's small and larger birds in the "wild" (as opposed to set up shots with a bird feeder). I either shoot with a tripod from a blind or more recently by handholding and relying on Optical Stabilization..

The optical stabilization feature of the lens is what makes possible handholding this fully zoomed out lens for shooting bigger flying birds like egrets or Hawaiian hawks and shooting sitting but constantly moving smaller birds at ISO 100-200 (higher than that produces unacceptable noise levels). The OS feature enables me to handhold at 2-3 f stops when otherwise the f6.3 maximum aperture at 750 mm would mean too slow a shutter speed for sharp images. Of course, I might be able to stretch to a claimed 4 stop advantage but then in post-processing I'd have to deal with too much noise to give clean images.

I find that if the target bird is no bigger in the view finder than the 6mm focus area I've specified I won't get a good image no matter how steady I hold the camera. That means I've got to get closer to the birds and that means less time to focus, give OS a chance to stabilize, and get the shot(s) because small birds move a lot even when sitting 'still'. In this regard the moderate autofocus speed of the Sigma lens is just adequate. I'd like to have it be faster and it bogs down even more shooting during the golden hours around sunrise or sunset when light levels are low and shadows are deeper.

Still though for an "ultra telephoto" lens at this low a price I couldn't ask for more in sharpness when fully zoomed, autofocus speed, general chromatic quality and solid build quality. Bokeh is good with nicely rounded highlights (instead of obvious geometric shapes from too few iris blades)

When I first got my Sigma I did some testing under controlled and uniform conditions at focal lengths ranging in 50 mm intervals from 150-500 and at maximum and medium apertures to test sharpness using a resolution test chart from Cornell U. I found that from 400 to 500 mm produced optimum sharpness with no significant chromatic aberration or fringing. At 200 mm the lens produced a slightly softer image but that's not what I have the lens for so it doesn't matter to me.

The D7000 with battery grip and the Sigma lens weighs 6 lbs 11 oz or just over 3 kg. The provided lens handle fits into a Swiss-Arca style tripod bracket but I use an additional bracket which has safety stops to keep the lens from sliding out of the bracket as long as the clamp screw on the tripod mount is tight enough. To me the total weight allows hand held fully zoomed shots for up to maybe 30 seconds but beyond that it's a bit much. The only thing the lens could do to improve on this would be faster autofocusing in low light.

In summary, unless you can/want to spend thousands for a faster autofocusing telephoto and if you're shooting wildlife you'd be hard pressed to find a better lens for the money. If you need a faster lens with the same or further reach and faster auto focus you'll have to look at more expensive lenses.
