The Sigma 70-300mm 4-5.6 DG Lens is the ideal compact and economical choice for a telephoto zoom lens. By incorporating an autofocusing motor into the lens itself, it can now autofocus with all Nikon DSLR cameras (including the D40, D40x, etc.). In addition, with the motor built into the lens, focusing will be quieter and more responsive. Capable of macro photography, this lens has a 1:4 maximum magnification at focal lengths shorter than 200mm, from 1:2.9 to 1:2 at focal lengths between 200mm and 300mm, and 1:2 maximum close-up magnification at the 300mm focal length.
It is the ideal high performance lens for portraits, sports photography, nature photography, and other types of photography that frequently use the telephoto range.
The DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance while also cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor.

Regardless of the manufacturer, this is a great lens. I've been using this lens with my Nikon D60 for 6 years. I've had no issues and no complaints with it.
The reviews I've read, regarding the auto focus slowness, I believe is from those people who don't have patience to wait.
When I'm zooming in at least 200 - 300mm, I want the lens to take it's time and focus on the subject so my result is a quality, professional shot. Why would you need a fast auto focus on something hundreds of feet away? Taking an action shot? Then get close with a fast auto focusing lens.
Well worth the price. I took some amazing shots at the Grand Canyon and I am very satisfied.
I would recommend this lens to anyone in the market for a decent priced zoom lens. Whether you are a beginner or professional, I feel this lens will not disappoint you.

You get what you pay for... The images are not as sharp as I would like and I really don't enjoy looking at the photos as much as other photos taken with my 18-50mm sigma f2.8 wide... If you don't mind photos that are not so sharp then it's OK lens but I don't want to wast my time going for a great setup and not getting a great result, just not worth the time....

I am a recreational photographer, my father is a pro and recommended Sigma as a good brand as I was looking for a lense for my newly acquired Nikon D3100. I have used this lense to take some outdoor shots and some indoor shots of my son playing basketball and I am really loving the pictures it is taking. The auto focus reponse has been great and the photos are really good. I will admit with indoor I could probably add a better flash and that would improve things but for my purposes the photos are fantastic.

I use this lens for macro, portrait, landscape, I guess I use it very generally. Fast auto-focus, excellent Macro focusing. Its just a little heavy when using a tripod at 200mm-300mm focal length and bounces for a few seconds(I don't have the best tripod), but for the price it can't be beat.

Haven't shot a lot with this lens besides some test pictures. I find it a bit stiff when adjusting focal length. Very quick auto focus but some shots did require manual focus to hit the sweet spot. Did some long lens shooting and you do have to shoot off a tripod at full zoom being there's no stabilizer. Macro gives some great shallow depth of field shots. For the price it's a good lens.

very useful range outdoor taking pictures (not very good in low light). If you want a budget superzoom for outdoor shooting, this is a good deal. will buy this product again.

I am only using this for recreational use. It was recommended to me by my brother who uses cameras and telephoto lenses for the government. The lens works great on my Nikon d3100. I felt that prior to this lens my camera wasn't all that impressive, now I am completely satisfied.

This is a great upgrade from the 18-55 kit lens. I needed a telephoto and so far, for the price, I'm very impressed. The picture quality is good so I can only assume the large front and glass are helping that. For the amount of zoom this lens provides it is very compact, still fits in my little bag. I would suggest this as a second lens to those Nikon users who will be taking crisp outdoor photography in well lit situations.

I am in no means a pro, just a home hobbyist that enjoys taking photos of my kids and various items for personal use. So far I have really liked this lens. It performs as it should and takes good looking photos using a Nikon D3100. I did get a monpod for those long range shots that need a little stabilization and in tandem they have worked very well. I would recomend this lens for any one that is looking for a good general use lens.

I am a novice SLR user and was looking at two lenses, one for macro, one for distance.
This lens was moderately price and covered both of these needs beautifully within limitations for a learning photographer. I like that it can be used automatically or manually, and it carries easily due it it's telescoping lens.
The auto focus is consistently clear and interchanging lenses a a breeze.
