Editor's TakeDesigned specifically for photographers, the X-Rite ColorMunki Photo Color Management Solution provides display, projector and RGB/CMYK printer profiling in an easy-to-use all-in-one integrated solution with a streamlined interface, enabling photographers to easily, quickly and affordably match colors from display to print. The ColorMunki Photo software provides particular accuracy when profiling for FleshTones along with providing excellent grey balance for neutral Black & White output. Plus, you'll be able to send your images to your clients with a high level of confidence that they are viewed in a calibrated environment with the DigitalPouch communication tool.

The Swiss-engineered ColorMunki spectrophotometer is a portable all-in-one device that provides Monitor, Projector & Printer Profiling, along with ambient light measurement and spot color measurement without the need for any cumbersome accessories to repurpose the device; it even has a Built-in white calibration tile for self calibration. Think of it as a "Swiss Army Knife" of color management.

You'll get precise monitor calibration using a basic mode with preconfigured settings or an advanced mode with settings for white point, ambient compensation and precalibration. It also has the ability to capture the ambient light within a room or a light box for an impressive level of color calibration. The ColorMunki is even capable of fast and accurate projector profiling to project your images to your clients, family, or friends with color confidence. It's RGB and CMYK printer profiling technology provides complete color control along with optimized printer profiling, and has the ability to optimize specific colors, black & white shades, and flesh tones to ensure that the color you see is the color you get. Plus there is no need to read individual color patches because ColorMunki's super fast printer profiling can rapidly scan test charts in less than one minute.

Furthermore, the ColorMunki software provides color creation and communication tools that allow you to grab colors from virtually anywhere, including your entire image library, preview your color palettes under different light sources and even preview for PrintSafe production under a variety of different printing methods.

No Cumbersome Accessories Needed
The All-in-One design of the ColorMunki spectrophotometer means no separate accessories are needed to profile your displays and printers. A white calibration tile is integrated right into the device, and it includes a protective bag, which doubles as an integrated monitor holder.
Calibrate with Ease
Quick, easy, and accurate display-to-print matching is what the ColorMunki is all about. The included software guides you through whichever profiling function you desire. You can select "match my printer to my display" and you'll be completely guided through the profiling process, or you can easily jump right to display, projector or printer profiling.
Calibrate LCD & Laptop Computer Displays
The ColorMunki calibrates LCD & Laptop monitors using either the Easy or Advanced mode. The Easy mode has predetermined selections, so you don't need to be a color expert. For those looking for more control over whitepoint or ambient measurements, choose the "advanced" mode. The DDC auto detect control will quickly determine if your monitor is compliant and if so, perform one button display profiling. ColorMunki can also calibrate multiple displays with ease, and provides before and after visualization, as well as calibration reminder prompts.
Projector Profiling
Using Video projectors to display images has always been a hit-or-miss proposition in regards to color accuracy. Utilizing the same profiling technology for your computer display, and with just a flip of the devices selector wheel, ColorMunki will give you fast and accurate projector profiles so you can project your images to your client, family or friends with confidence.
Printer Profiling
The ColorMunki can profile RGB and CMYK printers, and delivers outstanding printer profile quality for print color that matches what you see on your screen. You simply scan one test chart of 50 patches, and ColorMunki calculates an interim profile and learns how your printer behaves for these colors. It then produces a second chart that perfects your profile once you scan it. The ColorMunki even has the ability to optimize for specific colors, black & white, and flesh tones from individual image types. And the ColorMunki's super fast scanning capability can rapidly measure test charts in less than one minute, so you don't lose precious productivity time with the process of printer profiling.
Camera Profiling
With the X-Rite ColorChecker Camera Calibration software, you'll be able to use both a desktop application and an Adobe Lightroom Plug-In for creating custom DNG profiles
Color Profile Management
ColorMunki includes software to help manage and fully utilize your color profiles. ColorMunki's AppSet talks with your photo and design applications to automate printer profile setting, and with PrintSafe checking capabilities, you'll be able to preview your color palettes under different lighting sources or printing processes before you go to production.
Color Extraction
ColorMunki can capture colors from virtually anywhere to enhance your editing and design creativity. It can automatically extract the top colors from any image or you can go directly into your image and add any color to your palette. ColorMunki also lets you grab any color from the visible spectrum - quickly and accurately capturing spectral color from any surface and import it directly into your photo and design applications.
Communicate in Color - Effortlessly
The ColorMunki optimizes the shadows, highlights, and balance of your images, so no matter how you show your work, the world will see exactly what you intended. You'll share your images with confidence with DigitalPouch, a self-executable application that checks for ViewSafe* conditions on the receiver side. Simply drag and drop the images you want to transport into the pouch and "zip" it up to send. The receiver will be able to view the images in the same application viewing screen, while the application looks for and verifies that an accurate, up-to-date monitor profile is in use. Amazingly, this assurance of viewer color does not require the receiver to own any version of the ColorMunki software.

* ViewSafe Image Transport runs on Mac and PC, and is compatible with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, and QuarkXPress.

Finally a color profiling tool with all of the features I need at a price I can afford.

I had used the Eye-1 profiler before to create paper profiles for my printer while owning the Spyder 2 for my monitor. But I never could quite justify the price of the entire kit for monitors, projectors and printer profiling.

But then along came the Color Munki.

It took a couple of tries before I grasped the differences in profiling with the Munki as opposed to the Spyder. With the Spyder you would balance the white point with the monitor controls. The Color Munki does this for you. You need to reset the monitor to the defaults. Then spend the time to achieve the green checks indicating that you have set the brightness and contrast properly.

As of today we have profiled the monitors on both computers as well as seven different fine art papers for two different printers.

Profiling for printing is easy. I really like the idea that the software bases the second chart on the results from the first chart. Then to make it even better, you can go back and tweak the profile for specific images by creating a custom color chart from the image you want to print. Conceptually this is a great idea.

Picking up colors from real world objects is so simple. Likewise you can create a custom pallet from an image.

All of the operations are performed within the same application. The interface is very intuitive. As yet I haven't needed to use the included video instructions.

We haven't tried the projector profiling yet, but soon.

The only two criticisms I have are:
    1. They could explain how to set up the monitor for profiling a little better. It will profile the monitor at the brightness and contrast settings you have without requiring you to achieve a green check mark in the software. This resulted in my monitor being a lot brighter than my print. Once I darkened the monitor and spent the time to set it correctly my prints are much closer in brightness to my monitor.

    2. The USB cable has a tendency to pull out of the device too easily. This usually happened just as I was starting to calibrate my monitor. Each time I would have to recalibrate the Color Munki. They could make a little clip to make this more secure. But a piece of tape works just as well.

Overall I highly recommend this for anyone that wants great looking prints. If you spend the money for a good printer, then the money for paper and ink, it is foolish not to spend the few dollars more the Color Munki costs.

Before I say much about the product let me first disclose that I am a newbie to color managment. While I have a lot of computer experience, I've never exlored this area before. I can't compare the ColorMunki to other systems. Perhaps it is really the best product available or at least the best value for the money. I don't know. I can only try to describe my concerns and let you make up your own mind. If you want to know all the great things about it, there are other reviews on the Net that will give you that information. Here goes.

The ColorMunki is a new product that allows one to calibrate monitors, printers, and projection devices.

My first opinion was that the documentation seemed to be a bit on the terse side. The printed "manual" contains about 18 paragraphs of instructions (many of them single sentences) in english. Even with the computer based help files, instructions are very limited and, to a newbie, confusing. There is room for a LOT of improvement here.

Next I discovered that the CD does NOT contain the program!!! You have to download the 286Mb file. If you don't have high speed Internet I wouldn't recommend buying this product!

Another issue not disclosed up front is that the software can only be activated three times. If you install it and activate it once, then buy a new computer and activate it again, and then have a hard drive failure and have to activate it a third time, I guess you'll be out of luck if a virus crashes your hard drive. I often update my hardware and find myself re-installing Windows at least once a year. I forsee problems ahead. If you thought you were going to use the device on more than one computer, you may have to re-think.

I don't ever like to buy copy-protected software and this is seems like a particularly heavy-handed restriction on the part of the company. It may be that all similar products are so encumbered but if so it's time for the users to complain loudly!

I got past all that and calibrated the two monitors on my computer. I then got to do it again when a friend suggested I should have reset the monitors to their default settings before doing the calibration runs. Oh well, practice is good. I had three minor problems during the process.

    1) You have to position the ColorMunki over the top of the monitor so it hangs in front of a certain spot on the screen, identified by the software. A case and weighted strap are provided for the purpose but the strap is just not quite heavy enough and not adjustable enough to make it easy.

    2) the mini-USB connector is just too flimsy to make a reliable connection to the ColorMunki. If it comes loose you have to start over with a self-calibration of the Munki.

    3) Changing settings on the ColorMunki (like from calibrate monitor to Self-calibration and back) involves twisting the round center to point to a different location. This twisting isn't exactly difficult but there is a trick to it and it's hard to twist while not pulling the connector out and without bashing your LCD screen. A little flap sticking out from the side that one could grasp to turn would have been nice.

I did get my monitors calibrated and I do believe it did a good job of it (though see disclamer at the start.)

Next I wanted to try the printer calibration system. I had some HP Premium Plus Photo semi-gloss paper from my former HP printer and wanted to use it on my Epson R2400. I managed to get through the process with a minimal amount of frustration. Sliding the ColorMunki along the strips of color sometimes works and sometimes fails. I haven't yet figured out if I'm starting too far or too close to the leading edge? Am I going too far or not far enough off the far edge? Am I going too fast or too slow? Am I going straight enough? Do I need to wait longer after pressing the button to start the scan or am I waiting too long? I'm sure practice and experience will tell. Still, I was able to get the job done and it worked. The printer produced noticably better prints than before the calibration.

Later I decided to try to refine the calibration by using colors from an actual photo I wanted to print. I was able to sample the colors easily with the ColorMunki and I got the sample strips printed. When I tried to scan them I got some kind of error and the system crashed. I haven't had the nerve to try again yet.

If you just want to calibrate your monitor, there are less expensive alternatives. I thought the combination of monitor and printer calibration was a pretty good value for the price and perhaps it is. I do think the company has a lot of room yet for improvement or perhaps thats just the current state of the art. I don't know. Despite my criticisms, I am using it and it is working. I hope I've been objective enough so more experienced users can form their own opinions. Caveat Emptor.

Comments about X-Rite ColorMunki Photo Color Management Solution:

Matched up my dual monitor display of glossy screen iMac and matte screen Apple Cinema Display. The printer was a little harder. I think the fact that it's a Canon Pixma Pro 9000 MK II has a lot to do with that because this model has a reputation for being difficult. One thing that helped a little in the end was turning off an incandescent desk lamp when viewing prints. I love being able to use the color checker in Lightroom to make the colors pop. All in all you need this or something similar if you're serious about the best color you can get throughout your workflow.

After several years of using spider pro, I switched to ColorMunki management solutions, my prints have never match my screen as well as it does now. The ability I have to color profile my printer has made so that what I have on screen matches anything I print. I couldn't even begin to tell you how much ink and paper I have saved. Thank you ColorMunki for making a great and affordable product...

Comments about X-Rite ColorMunki Photo Color Management Solution:

Color calibration is not often considered when viewing a photo on a monitor of some fashion. It's taken for granted these things are built into the software, and they are... to anextent. Getting to them is the not-so-much fun part. Xrite Color Munki, put some fun back into it, and took the guess work out of this complicated science we call color management. The added video tuorial was a great touch. It familiarized me with it pretty quick. A gentle, easy, even, touch is needed for swiping the strips when calibrating profiles for photo-papers. Once mastered, everything else is a breeze. Just follow the directions, if Color Munki gets out of calibration, it will notify you, and have you re-calibrate it, before moving on. What a great tool for managing color for/on you printer and monitor.
I found out about Xrite Color Munki yhrough my school, Art Institute of Pittsburgh (AIOP) online division. It is the key tool for our Color Calibration Course, I am just finishing up. Without it, I may have done much worse in learning about calibrating color, and color profiles for printers.

Comments about X-Rite ColorMunki Photo Color Management Solution:

If you are working with a commercial lab, posting photos on the internet, or printing your own work, you should have your monitor and printer calibrated. This will do that, but you have to read all the directions and follow them religiously, or you won't get good, usable results. I print from a MacBook Pro and Photoshop CS 5.1 to an ancient HP Photosmart 8750 and use the Photoshop Manages Colors option in the printer driver with specific calibration profiles for each paper and ink combination that were made with the X-Rite Colormunki Photo system. It works! The profiles are quite accurate and now I would not attempt to either send work out to a commercial lab, or print my own work without the calibration. It works for B&W as well as color. If you can stand reading directions over and over a few times to make sure you understand what's being said, then you should not have a problem.

Color management is very difficult in the best of circumstances. X-Rite does a pretty good job in helping you at least getting going. I've used this to color match two monitors (laptop/external NEC PA241W)and a printer (Epson R1900). After I'm done, the printer image looks VERY close to the image on the screen.

Trying to get all of the pieces together to make it work is a HUGE hassle in Photoshop or Lightroom, so some of the issues I have are not with the ColorMunki but with the OS/Printer Drivers/Photoshop. Once the pieces all fall in place, having a set of calibrated devices brings it all together.

I've been printing high res and good glass photos for almost a year after a hiatus. I do technically challenging photos including infra red filters. My prints were muddy even though my monitor was giving me good repro of what I saw on the camera. I calibrated monitor and printer within about thirty minutes. Now I am reprinting. This is a must for anyone that wants perfect reproduction with the most amount of ease.

Comments about X-Rite ColorMunki Photo Color Management Solution:

Works with latest software update (Colormunki Photo 1.2.1 for Mac) unlike the similar Colormunki Design I had been using at work for a couple years. The CM Design has not been updated for OS X 10.10, while the CM Photo has been.

Monitor calibration seems very good, more fine gradations of color are measured than with CM design model. However, ther are no user selectable gamma adjustments in the Colormunki Photo Software. You are stuck with the default 2.2G. You can set custom color temperature and brightness.

Both CM specs work with Eizo Colornavigator for Eizo Coloredge monitors too, with far more control and accuracy than a mac monitor.

Haven't profiled a printer yet but will soon.

Colormunki Photo Seems fine so far.

The product worked intermittently at first but eventually got the job done. A few weeks later it won't even connect to either of my computers except very sporadically. B&H refused to take it back and sent me to the manufacturer. XRite has made me jump through many hoops for a couple of months now. After many attempts I got it to connect to one of my computers again so I could print out a systems report for them. Now they deny receiving it. The rep I was working with eventually agreed to replace it but nothing happened. I contacted them again and got switched to a different rep who wants me to start over, test it again, send him system reports, etc. They refuse to replace it and they don't even keep their word. Don't do business with them. It's a rip off.

I am printing on an Epson 3380 from a 27" iMac. The monitor calibration produced a minor change when viewed before and after. Perhaps if I was using another monitor the benefits would be more aparent. When I created the printer profile on the Epson printer the profile created by the ColorMunki was negligible no different than the default profile from Epson. So again, unless you are profiling something unique, there was no improvement over the defaults. The big disapointment however was very clunky nature of the X-Rite software. It seems that X-Rite and the current OSX for Mac are not on speaking terms. Like some previous X-Rite products, I'm thinking of the EZ Color software that was bundled with my Epson V750 Scanner, X-rite doesn't keep up with the OSX developments and will leave you hanging.

This product is everything the description implies. The installation was extremely easy and the operation was a no brainer. I am a photographer and use a 27" iMac and Canon Pro9500 Mark II printer for my finer output. After struggling for several months with an outdated squid and old software, and more $ in ink than I am willing to add up, I decided it was time to upgrade my color management process. I bought this version so that I can make printer profiles in addition to calibrating my monitor. So far, I've been able to calibrate the monitor with ease and was surprised at the brightness reduction, but I guess that is to be expected since these iMacs come pretty bright right out of the box. I was able to make printer profiles quite easily - so simple and intuitive - but have not fine-tuned them yet because I am waiting for some updated papers to arrive. I will get serious about it at that point. All in all, I am quite pleased with this system both because of the ease of use and the integration of the paper profiles for the individual printer. Even though I have not completely put this item to its full use yet, the output I am getting is already greatly improved. I am confident that I now have the tools to get my color output accurate, especially considering the reasonable price point of this device.

Working toward consistent color management across all my devices and with an eye toward delivery accurate color representation in my photos, I purchased this product. While the in-package directions were rather misleading in several places, a review of videos found on the internet pointed me toward obtaining a solid color profile for my computer. I would rate this as a solid product, but one that you simply can't rely on the printed instructions to get you through its use.

I do a hot of high-end real estate photography and print a lot of photographs and advertising brochures. I've been terribly frustrated with unreliable results on my prints and had been pursuing a trial and error approach to correcting them. Colormunki calibrated my monitor and all my printers first try out of the box and I am still surprised at how easy it was. It paid for itself the first time I used it. I use Adobe CC including photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.

The ColorMunki Photo does a nice job of calibrating my monitor when it works, the device just does not work often enough. The hardware device needs to be removed from the weighted cover in order to calibrate to the room light and then needs to be placed back inside the weighted cover in order to be suspended in front of the monitor. The zipper on two weighed bags has broken off. Now, I have learned that the ColorMunki Photo cannot calibrate two monitors connected to a Mac running the current operating system OS X 10.9. The work around involves making the second monitor the primary, rebooting, calibrating, restoring the original primary monitor and rebooting again. No thanks! If X-Rite will not even support a current popular OS, I cannot recommend their products.

Gone is the fear of calibrating my monitor, with the ColorMunki , it was a snap. I am not very computer literate so I get intimidated easily. This was very easy to use and I will continue to do it every two weeks.
