This Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro Lens made for the Nikon SLR system incorporates a motor built into the lens itself, which gives it the capability to autofocus with all Nikon DSLR cameras (including the D40 and D40x). In addition, with the motor built into the lens, focusing will be quieter and more responsive.

The 70-300mm Di LD Macro is a quality compact ultra tele zoom lens which covers the 70mm to 300mm telephoto range, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2 at the tele end. It delivers ultimate handling ease and portability in the field due to its lightweight size and mechanical operation. Best suited for shooting outdoors to make full use of the real telephoto of 300mm as well as providing diversity in portraiture using the medium focal length ranges of 70mm to 135mm.

Di (Digitally Integrated Design) is a designation Tamron puts on lenses featuring optical systems designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras.

Di Design
Digitally Integrated is a designation Tamron puts on lenses featuring optical systems designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras. By employing "Internal Surface Coatings" and multiple-layer coating technology on ordinary elements, ghosting and flare due to reflections that occur when light enters through the front element and reflections caused by the imagers themselves are reduced to the absolute minimum.
Macro Effect of 1:2 in Telephoto Zoom Range
Flipping a macro switch in the focal length range of 180mm to 300mm allows entry into the macro range, for photography as close as 1.6' (95cm) from the subject. In the macro range, one can take advantage of the telephoto effect and a maximum magnification ratio up to 1:2. In addition, since the focal length in the macro range spans from 180mm to 300mm, zooming can also be used to adjust composition.
LD Glass
LD glass elements reduce various aberrations while minimizing the fall-off of light at the corners.

I bought this lens after dropping my old 70-300mm recently which was another brand. I was immediately impressed at the quality and wish I had dropped my old lens years ago. I really love the macro function on this lens which I use probably half the time shooting. It was the main reason I went with this lens over the Nikon lens which was much more expensive.

Using this with a Nikon D70.
Loved this lens when I initially received it. Great in well-lit situations, outdoors, etc. Still love my first few images from this lens. It does not function quite so well in low light or indoor situations, but hey - you can't have everything, right?
That being said, I had A LOT of difficulty switching from the zoom to macro features and vise versa. Followed the enclosed instructions precisely, but sometimes it would toggle smoothly and sometimes it wouldn't.
It began having trouble focusing in AF mode and the motor seemed to "skip" slowly to the correct focus. It now takes 3-4 seconds to auto-focus. Completely unacceptable.
At some point, while using the zoom function, it completely stopped responding to the adjustment ring that you turn to zoom in or out. I am currently left with a great fixed-focal length lens. Can't zoom in or out in macro or zoom mode.
Luckily, I paid for the replacement plan and I should be getting my money back.

Good lens for the money when it worked, but really disappointed in how quickly it went bad considering that my Nikon lenses are more than a decade older and still function perfectly.

I bought this lens to go with my new DSLR. I don't have a big budget, but I still need the ability to zoom in more than the kit lens will allow. This lens is great and it's now the one I use the most.

Comments about Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

I picked up this lens as a holdover until I can save for a higher quality lens. However, with this lens I'm not going to be in such a hurry. I put a couple hundred shots through the lens through the past week to test it and while it's not perfect it's certainly not a bad lens. I'd heard that the auto-zoom motor was loud. Yes, it might be considered loud, but only if you're really focusing on it. I had the lens outside in the pasture shooting our running horses and never noticed it. That brings me to another point. The autofocus did a great job. It kept up with horses running at me quite well. I shot most of my pictures in the 100-200 mm range, and it didn't seem to struggle at all with the moving target. I think the downfall of this lens comes at the highest range when extended to 300 mm. I took it out and shot some lunchtime images of the prairie dogs behind my office. There was some noticable aberation in the portion of the image not in focus. Granted, I'm still a relative beginner when it comes to DSLR's, so there might be a learning curve.

Overall, I'm pleased with the lens. As my title says, it's a great lens for a beginner to shoot with or, for that matter, anyone on a budget. It feels well built. There's no creep on the zoom. Autofocus did a great job keeping up. It might not be as quiet as some others, but that's a very minor point in my opinion. It doesn't have vibration reduction, but a tripod and a good shutter speed took care of that. Yes, I would recommend this lens.

At this price, it's hard to go wrong. Takes some excellent shots. Some softness at full mag, so stop it down a bit for full 300mm use. The Macro mode is fantastic. Focus is pretty quick. Better than a lot of similarly priced zoom.

I use the lens to capture outdoor events where the added magnification helps to frame the picture.
I like the fact that it has a polymer body which makes it light and makes for an ideal match with my Nikon D3200. Some reviewers have described its autofocus as slow, which I don't think is accurate. My lens focuses fairly fast.
I found the clarity and color rendition to be somewhat below par but acceptable for non=professional work.
Overall its performance to price relationship is very good.

The auto focus isnt the fastest, but is better than my 55-200 Nikon kit lens. Very happy with the quality of the item and photo image, even happier witht the price.

The focus speed is a little slow but that was expected. Also, the macro with this lens is awesome! All in all it's a good lens for the price and hopefully I won't need this but you get a 6 yr warranty when you register it, nice!

As an amateur photographer who likes flower pictures the macro is great. Good reasonably priced lens for folks like me.

Comments about Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

This Tamron 70-300mm lens is very versatile. It takes very sharp zoom photos and macro shots. I use this on my Nikon D7000 and it is as good as Nikon lens in many ways. (It is not a Nikon lens but it does a very good job at a fraction of the price). When using for Macro shots, use manual focusing, otherwise it will keep on hunting for AF and will be frustrating for a while – you may never even get the AF. Please follow the instructions on turning on and off of the Macro function. The manual comes with the lens is not good. Download the instruction manual from tamron-usa.

Comments about Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

This Tamron 70-300mm lense is my second lens from B&H. I broke the other one. I love this lens for Macro photography and for telephoto shooting. I use it on my Nikon D5000 and it is as reliable as a Nikon lens. It is easy to attach and use on my camera. It zooms in very fast and focuses fast. It also has the best factory warranty,(6) years, than any lens I looked at, and I looked at most of them before buying.I haven't found anything that is negative about this lens except that I wish it has image stabilization. Other than that it is perfect for me.
