Product Highlights
  • Zoom Super Wide Angle
  • With Built-In Motor
  • For Nikon Digital Cameras

The Tamron SP AF17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] Lens made for the Nikon SLR system incorporates a motor built into the lens itself, which gives it the capability to autofocus with all Nikon DSLR cameras (including the D40 and D40x). In addition, with the motor built into the lens, focusing will be quieter and more responsive.

The Tamron SP AF17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD lens is a lightweight, compact, fast standard zoom lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras. The focal length of this lens is equivalent to approx. 26-78mm in 35mm format.

This lens offers an f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range, to ensure stress-free photographic shots at all focal lengths and distances. Additionally, a broader photographic expression through the use of faster shutter speeds as a result of the maximum aperture offers enhanced photographic pleasure.

Note! Di-II lenses cannot be used with digital SLR cameras using image sensors that are larger than that of an APS-C size imager, or with 35mm film SLR cameras.

Optimized for Digital SLR
The use of XR (Extra Refractive Index) glass optimizes the overall distribution of optical power, and also reduces various aberrations to the absolute minimum while achieving remarkable compactness. In addition, suitable positioning of two hybrid aspherical elements serves to maintain imaging performance and to shorten and compress the entire optical system.
LD Glass
An LD (Low Dispersion) glass element is used to accomplish effective compensation of on-axis and lateral chromatic aberrations, a critical factor for enhancing optical quality in digital photography, in order to achieve outstanding optical performance over the entire zoom range.
Enhanced Peripheral Illumination
Peripheral light fall-off is minimized when compared with that of conventional lenses for film cameras, so images are uniformly bright from the center to the periphery.
Internal Surface Coating to Reduce Ghosting and Flare
By employing "Internal Surface Coatings" (i.e., multiple-layer coatings on cemented surfaces of plural elements) and multiple-layer coating technology on ordinary elements, ghosting and flare due to the reflections that occur when light enters through the front element and reflections caused by the imagers themselves are reduced to the absolute minimum.
Zoom Lock Mechanism
The Zoom Lock prevents unwanted barrel extension when carrying the lens/camera combination.

This Tamron is a great lens for the money. This latest version of the lens has a built in motor which greatly improves autofocus operation. I have tested this lens indoors in low light (shooting at ISO 800 at 1/30 of a sec or slower) and in my tests it focused nearly as quickly as my 35mm f/2 Nikkor, using my D200's built-in autofocus assist lamp. Also, I found the noise generated by autofocus operation to be comparable to the autofocus noise generated by my 35mm nikon, perhaps a tad louder. Still, it is by no means overly loud when compared to other non silent wave motor lenses.

This lens has very good color rendition, and is very sharp. It has a full-frame equivalent of 25mm on the wide end of the zoom range, making it a great way to make wide angle photographs on an APS-C sensor camera such as the D300, without breaking the bank.

In terms of construction, the lens is mostly plastic, but it is not cheap, bottom-of-the-barrel kit lens plastic: the lens has weight to it, and feels very durable and well constructed. Another feature I found quite useful is the zoom lock on the lens, which prevents lens creep when the lens is fully extended.

The only real negative I've found with this lens so far is a noticeable amount of chromatic aberration, in the form of cyan or red "halos" along the edges of high contrast areas, such as the edge of a white building against a blue sky. This is not a huge problem with software like Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop, and very easy to fix in Adobe Lightroom with basically one move of a slider, more or less eliminating the problem from my images entirely.

Overall, I am very pleased with this lens: it is affordable, well made, very sharp, and a solid performer for the money. The comparable Nikon is three times the price for a not-so-huge jump in quality, and therefore I find this lens to be a great purchase and a terrific value.

I used this for about a week and half, it was later returned for my money back.
Optically this lens it top notch with good build quality. The auto focus seems good in adequate lighting, but it is SLOOOOOOWWWW in low light (when you press the shutter half way down to focus, it starts off fast to focus, but when it get close it does micro-steps into focus. You will notice this more as you have lower light.) How slow you ask? I will say, typical indoor rock concert lighting, it will take as much as 6 seconds to acquire focus. To compare, the Nikon 18-55 3.5-5.6 kit lens takes 1.5 seconds. This is just an unacceptably slow and no amount of photo shopping can fix this. Also note on build quality, there is a sign of the weak spot on the mount side of the zoom ring.

For more than two months I was debating between Sigma 17-50 and this one. I finally pulled the trigger and I got Tamron. When coupled with my D7100 it produces amazing images. The lens is sharp across the range ... from highest to lowest apertures but it really shines between f/4 and f/10. The color rendering is quite good along with contrast. This might not be the best 24-70mm lens (APS-C sensor equivalent) but it's really darn close. There is very little to complain about this Tamron ... highly recommended.

Comments about Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II LD Aspherical [IF] Autofocus Lens:

I hope I can be helpful with this review. I am an artist/amateur. I have been involved in the creation of images using the photographic method for decades. Currently the tools I have been working with are: D800 with Nikon 24 2.8 AFD, Sigma 35 1.4 AFS G, and a nikon 85 1.8 AFD. Also, the D7100 with Samyang 14 2.8, Nikon 35 1.8 AFS G, and Nikon 60 2.8 AFS G. I shoot urbanish landscapes. The vast majority of my shooting is done between F/6.3 and f/10 on a solid tripod.

I put on several exhibitions per year and show in 10.5" by 20.5" on 18"x28" frame or 13.75"x21" on 22"x28" frame. I print with an Epson 4900 on Sihl Ink Press Baryta Warm tone.

I purchased this lens as a light convenient alternative. I also considered the Sigma 17-50. I did not consider the over priced very heavy and out dated Nikon 17-55. I chose the Tamron 17-50, because OS/VC would not help in my style of shooting and adds weight and reliability issues.

I have encountered only one negative. Depending on the plane of focus the field curvature issue at 17 mm can sometimes present a problem in the edges of an image. No lens is perfect. Other than this small issue it is all great news. The build quality is ok. Not pro, but decent. Just fine for my use. Very sharp at all focal lengths, lovely contrast, and very nice color. Produces really beautiful prints. You know I also, unfortunately, own a Nikon 18-35 AFS 3.5-4.5 G. On DX between 18 and 26 mm it is surgically sharp. But it dose not make great prints. Stuff the lens reviews can not show. Like poor color. The little Tamron 17-50 is just a joy. I find myself using it on the D7100 all of the time. If your uses are at all like mine I can not recommend this little gem enough. If it was not for the small field curvature issue at 17 mm and maybe the not pro but plenty ok build I would give it a 5 star rating. Let's call it a 4.75. You know when I want the "bokeh" thing and or super speed I have my primes. But, man, this little Tamron 17-50 is one wonderful little surprise and I am enjoying it. This, and I have done a lot of testing, will be my 90% of the time lens for the D7100, a fine camera indeed.I can not yet comment much on auto focus capabilities as my style of shooting is not very demanding in this aspect. I have not encountered any problems with the auto focus.

just got this lens a week ago ya i do admit about what the others are saying about the build quality ya it might feel cheap but for the performance and the I.Q you can not beat it. think about it its a F/2.8 through the zoom range 17-50mm and its non vc so you have to shoot it like a prime lens even though its a zoom. this lens will be your go to lens for anything and everything you shoot just makes sure you go through the steps to get your warranty for 6 yrs. so thinks about that once you get the warranty on this lens for the next six years if there is any issue or you need for it to be clean u can send it to tamron and they will do that for you so if you got a basic nikon or a advance DX camera then u should try this lens you will see what not only me but everyone else is taking about

I rate this lens for value/IQ and -1 star for focus motor.

This lens is uber sharp and is aslo great for HDSLR video.

Easily my most used lens on my D90/D5100. I''l be moving to FF soon and am in the process of selling off my DX lenes. However, I'll hang on to this lens and my D5100, great combo.

Yes, the focus speed is slower than Nikon offerings but don't let that stop you from considering this lens.(If you're a high speed sports shooter than you barking the wrong tree anyway - go FF and get a 70-200VR.)

For the rest of we mortals, this lens is great and to get better IQ you'll have to spend many hundreds more for marginal improvement in IQ. PP software (DXO) will correct any distortion issues with this lens.

                  IQ-9
                  AF Speed-3
                  Color shift - 9
                  Bokeh -7
HDSLR use - 9 (stopped down to f4 and 24mm - astounding IQ)
Build Quality - 6 (plastic and the zoom gears are grittier than Nikon - so what!)
                  5 Year Warranty - 10
                  Light Weight - 9

                  everyday usefulness 10+

Seems to be well made and is doing everything I have been expecting from it I have done some landscape shots of Kansas and did a panorama that turned out very good and used it on a senior photo session.

Comments about Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II LD Aspherical [IF] Autofocus Lens:

After researching for a few months on various 17-50mm lens, I had decided to go with the Tamron 17-50 non VC, and it has not disappointed. I only gave it a 4 out of 5 because I haven't had a ton of hands on experience with it yet. Its been used for a little bit of landscape work and for some product photography and has given excellent results. The autofocus is very quick, and compared to what some say, the noise is barely noticeable. Had to get used to where the zoom and focus rings were, but both work very smoothly and have not had any issues at all. Overall this lens is a definite winner.

I did a lot of research prior to buying this lens. I also tried the nikon 17-55 2.8 and sent it back because of price and weight. The nikon was sharp but this lens looks sharper to me. I am using this on a d90 and d7000 and really like it. I also bought the non VC because all the posts I read said the non Vc was sharper and I am glad this lens was. The focus should be fast enough unless you are a sport shooter in which case I dont think you would want a lens this wide. This lens seems solid and a 6 year warranty is awesome. I also want to go FX soon so this was a good choice for my second body.

This one has soft focus and distortion around the edges. Point of focus was not sharp and shutter speed was fast enough to stop any movement. I was also using a medium aperture (f-5.6 - f-8). Lens seemed to have a very shallow depth of field in front of the focus point. But more behind the focus point.

So I'm sending this one back and try another, if it's no better, I'll return it and get the Nikon version. Wanted it for a back up lens and second lens, but this one isn't good enough to use on any paying jobs.

I love this lens! This is actually the second one of these lenses I have purched! I loved my first one and have had it for several years and after dropping the first one, although it amazingly didn't break, I felt uncomfortable using it for a wedding as I was unsure of how it would work through the day.

I use this lens pretty much 98% of the time from everything from weddings to babies to seniors!

I only have this lens a 4 instead of 5 because I wish the auto focus was a little faster. But obviously it's not that big of an issue considering I use it every single day!

As others have said, AF micro adjustment is needed. If you can do this with your camera, this lens is a superb value. Less than half the price and weight of the Nikkor equivalent, it produces very sharp images for me at its best apertures of f/4 and f/5.6.

It's not a perfect lens, but an excellent one if you find and use its sweet spot.

I have not used this lens very much since purchasing but have enjoyed the f-2.8 capability. I bought ths lense to replace my D40 kit lense and believe it will become a good addition to my gear. I do find the lense heavy but I believe I will adjust to the feel with continued usage. Another adjustment will be placement of my hand in holding the lense as I get used to the automatic spin of the lense barrel. All these things considered I believe the Tamron is a good purchase for the price.
