One of the things I always look for in a review for a hard drive is long term use. I occasionally see a month or a week and sometimes a year or two mentioned by the reviewer, speaking of how long they've had it without problems. As a professional video editor, a week or a month isn't long enough for me. I need to know if this thing is going to last me YEARS. I need to know if it's reliable. That one day one of the connections won't stop working. The production company I work for always needs space, and we've purchased 3 of these so far. I hope they will last years, the way my Maxtor & Western Digital has, even though at the time I paid 3 times as much for it when 1TB was two 500GB drives in one case. They never make a noise, even with the amount of dust they probably have inside it by now. I can sincerely say I have had one of these buffalo drives for 6 months without problems. I'll come back in 2011 or 2012 to say whether it is still in working order. I hope you appreciate this kind of review because I would appreciate the very same when looking for a long lasting drive.

I bought two of these because I wanted 800FW and a step up from WD drives. The case is great, all metal. However it turns out there is a known issue in the oxford chipset with macs. We found it would not automount reliably, and the computer had freezing issues running 10.6.3 an a new imac. Its on the Buffalo forums, and though not everyone gets it, I did with one out of the two. Which for automated backups kills the deal. Is this a real issue or I am I crank? Well 60 days after purchase Buffalo gave me two RMA's and said to me it was a 'known issue' and they were waiting on new firmware from oxford![...]Your mileage may vary, but for me this was a road better not taken.

I use this as a backup and I am glad that it is not the only backup. It started cutting off while files were being transferred, so I quit using it. I have been been checking it from time to time to make sure that all of the files are on another hard drive (takes a while because it will only run for a few minutes at a time). I guess I am now finished or at least have to stop, it will only make a beeping noise.

Comments about Buffalo 1TB DriveStation Combo 4 External Hard Drive:
I am a film and edit major at college so I needed an external hard drive with a lot of memory and 7200 rpm with firewire 800 for my videos and other projects. I adore the equipment on this site but ever get the chance to buy anything. So I was really excited to buy this hard drive online. This has been great for my videos so I don't have to worry too much about memory storage. The only down side was that I couldn't get the portable one, so this is a bit of a hassle to take to class. But I don't mind! This has been a real life saver! :)

I am a film and edit major in college, so I needed an external hard drive for my videos and projects. I browse this site all the time because I adore the equipment. So when I bought the external hard drive online from B&H, I was really excited! So far it's been amazing! The only bad part is that it's not a portable, so it's a bit of a hassle to bring it to classes, but there's nothing that can be done for that! This hard drive is a real life saver!

I've had very bad luck with hard drives. This is one of the only brands that has worked out for me. I have purchased 4 so far. I have pretty much filled them up, and have been able to ship them across the country - no problems whatsoever.

This is a good deal. I needed extra storage and wanted a drive that could do fire wire as well as USB. This one fits the bill and it runs at 7200 rpm which is important in video editing.
One small problem, my Mac Mini did not recognize the drive although the printed directions that came with the drive said it should. To solve this, I had to format the drive and therefore lost any kind of PC software that may have been on the drive. That's not a problem for me, since the drive will be used only with Mac based systems.

I needed an external hard drive with a bunch of space that would play video in real time through my editor. This one seems to fit the bill.

The product is easy to use and reliable. I have purchased Buffalo products in the past and have always been happy with them. I needed this for a computer that had a Firewire connection, though ist can be used with other interfaces. I am extrememly pleased with the speed at which it backed up my memories, documents, and programs.

Comments about Buffalo 1TB DriveStation Combo 4 External Hard Drive:
I have ten of these drives that I've purchased over the last couple years. I just ordered two more and when I received them I was disappointed to see they have changed the way the drives are built. They look the same cosmetically but someone decided to cut corners...
THESE DRIVES HAVE CHANGED: Both of the new drives I received vibrate and make very loud annoying buzzing noises. Both of them make the same horrible noise. This is not the solid construction of their earlier drives. The power supply is cheaper and incompatible with earlier versions, it now has a full size USB input instead of a mini, the power switch was replaced with a flimsier version. And the rear panel is no longer held in place by screws, which is probably the source of the vibration and buzzing noise.
It's sad, I finally found a quality drive that performs the way I want and then they change it on me.
Listening to that horrible vibration noise right now... my coworker in the office next to me is laughing because it's so loud he can hear it too.

I'd never heard of Buffalo before, but bought a couple of these drives for a job because of the price. That was back in January and I've been using them for pretty much every project since. Very reliable, comes with every possible cord you could need, 2 Firewire 800 ports, and oh yeah, they're pretty cheap too.

I was looking for a drive to use as my mac's Time Machine backup and was directed to this drive [...]. It worked OK for a while, but eventually stopped running Time Machine and became unmountable. Disk Utility was not even able to erase and reformat it. I got an RMA from Buffalo Tech and they replaced it. The exact same thing happened to the second drive. My only option is to replace it again through Buffalo. I do not want this drive as I have no faith in it any longer and I am also out a great deal of time, frustration and the costs to ship both drives back to the manufacturer.

I needed another external drive for offsite backup of my onboard RAID5 array. This drive is extremely well made, easy to use and even comes with cables. It needs no special drivers and the included software does NOT try to take over and force you to use it. (I use Windows XP backup instead.) Just plug it in and use it. Fast easy and reliable.

the first 2 months it was a dream come true. it has not been a year yet and it disconnects all the time causing me to have to restart my pc, freezing my projects and that's it. I'm going back to seagate. The seagate I had it for about 2 years and I'm editing videos with it at super speeds without a glitch or anything. To store stuff maybe, but to play music or videos or anything else. not.
