I mostly use this flash on and off camera in manual mode. I love the 180º of swivel, auto/manual zoom, back light, ease of use, and size.

The thing I really dislike is the way the LCD cycles through the various mode functions in only one direction (e.g. if your in manual mode at full power and you want to set it at say 1/4 power and you accidentally set in 1/8 power you have to cycle through all power settings until you get back to 1/4--you can't just go back).

I'd really love to see a PC connection on this flash for off-camera use. These limitations notwithstanding, this is an excellent little flash for those who don't wish to pay as much for a Canon 580 flash.

The E-TTL will not work with the T1i. It works fine in manual mode but the menu controls make it hard to adjust the exposure up and down. This is fine for portraits and other controlled situations but not good for spontaneous or less predictable lighting situations. It did work fine down to 1/320 sec for sports.

Comments about Sunpak PZ42X TTL Flash for Canon DSLR Cameras:

The good. Good price point for a powerful and flexible flash. Used as fill flash and in low light situations. If this unit lasts half as long as my 35+ year old Sunpack 411 I will be a happy camper.

The bad. Flash is a little hot at close range but I use a Rogue FlashBender and it becomes a non issue.

Comments about Sunpak PZ42X TTL Flash for Canon DSLR Cameras:

Got a second one, since a cheapo sold by b&H conked out as a backup. The auto zoom flash angle drives me nuts, but I use diffuser(s) for most of my shots. Love the manual vari-power settings, since the auto settings are fickle on all flash units. B& H did not carry a simple diffuser for it. Shame shame. Still got my old one though. Make your own or buy one of their fancier ones.My old one recycles quickly and has been very reliable.

Comments about Sunpak PZ42X TTL Flash for Canon DSLR Cameras:

I have used this Sunpak for 2 years with my Canon 7d and have been very pleased with it. I do mostly event photography and some photo-journalism.

I have seen the reviews that say it is superior to Canon of similar price. It is and itn't compared to the Canon 430EX I just purchased.

    It may be:

    -Similar guide number.
    -It has good durablity
-Good on camera and off camera with compatable ETTL cord or PocketWizzard.
-Buttons are larger and easier to use.
    -Lighter than 430EX

    It may not be:

-Has no master or slave option for multi-flash set up.
    -No high speed sync.
-Does not interact with camera menu system for external Function settings.
-Canon 430EX has slave funciton but not master

When shooting burst photos both the PZ and the 430EX are limited to 10 photos before having to rest the flash for 10 min. (according to the manuals).

The PZ unit I have doese over expose by 2/3 of a stop. This was easily adjusted once I became aware of the output.

At 60% of the price it represents a good value for a quality flash. But it does come with a 60% discount in fuctionality over the 430EX.

Sunpak PZ42X TTL Shoe Mount Flash

    By Marty

    from Long Island, NY

Comments about Sunpak PZ42X TTL Flash for Canon DSLR Cameras:

I am photo enthusiast. I use a Canon 60D. Most of my photos are of landscapes, with very little requirement for flash. I do occasionally take family photos. Since I am not a heavy user of flash, I felt that I did not need to incur the extra expense for a the purchase of a Canon flash. I have been more than pleased with the quality, features, and ease of operation of the Sunpak PZ42X TTL Shoe Mount Flash. The recycle time for me is more than adequate. i would have liked a more detailed manual for the flash. The manual in not detailed enough for the setup and operation of the flash with the camera.

So far it works well, no flakiness, it gives a decent range on the flash with a few nice features, while stopping short of having advanced features such as high speed sync. Still a good value for the money, and if I ever go pro, there will be many situations when it will be a fine tool.

Picked this unit up a few weeks ago and was working fine until it just stopped working. Suspecting that my old rechargeable batteries where at fault, I bought new Eneloop batteries from B&H but unit is still not working (Batteries are fine as I've tried them in an LED light I purchased). Very disapointed with my purchase as I'll now have to return unit (if I still can) and buy another. I live in Canada, so returing will add extra cost.. I would not recommend this flash.

i bought this for an event I had to photograph for our middle school. While I was at the event I really liked it, until it stopped working it would power on but not flash. I had a sunpak digiflash 3000 for a year and then I accendently broke it. so I got this I really liked the pictures it took. But I am sending it back because it wstopped working during the event I was photographing.

Comments about Sunpak PZ42X TTL Flash for Canon DSLR Cameras:

Very happy with this flash. I bought this to replace my Sigma that died and I am glad I bought the Sunpak.

Even at 30 feet, the recycle time is between instant and a half a second, and that was with 3 year old NiMH batteries.

My camera is a Canon Dital XTi and the Sunpak seems more tollerant to distance and takes correctly exposed shots from 10 feet and upwards.

With my old Sigma I was constantly adjusting the camera flash EV for close up and bounce flash shots.

The unit seems well made and is not oversized, and seems to have good flash output too.

I have only used it on the auto setting. In manual mode I did manage to adjust the EV setting up and down, but see no need to. I tried some bounce shots of the ceiling and I think it is easier to adjust the flash EV in the camera menu if you need a half stop or so extra exposure. The manual mode menu system in the flash need some getting used to.

Comments about Sunpak PZ42X TTL Flash for Canon DSLR Cameras:

I'm no expert with a flash, and needed to take pictures at a party. I put batteries in, put it on my 50D and did 45* bounce flash shots and got great pictures. Far better photographers than myself saw the pictures and complimented the tone and lighting.

                    Positives:
                    Price
                    Ease of use
                    Feels high-quality
Fully lights a 20X20 room with 45* bounce

                    Negatives:
After ~40 exposures the time to charge gets quite long - so keep extra batteries.

Comments about Sunpak PZ42X TTL Flash for Canon DSLR Cameras:

The flash performed very well. I've seen some reviewers complain about slow recycle time, but I had no problems with the flash even in burst mode shooting 5 consecutive frames. I was using lithium batteries so that may have made the difference.

I found the tilt and swivel worked well for bouncing the flash off walls and ceilings and the built-in wide angle diffuser worked well for those wide angle shots.

I'm just newly established professional photographer, so this flash works great for me. It's a little complex to understand at first, but works great once you've finally figured it out. great instrument for a great price! :)
