I know the trend is that tripods and monopods are being made of all sorts of exotic , space-age materials these days--all in the name of...well, I guess weight savings. Meanwhile this Manfrotto dares to show its face in public being made of something as pedestrian as aluminum. For shame.

But guess what? This is probably one of the best monopods on the market today (at ANY price) and when you actually get it in your hands, you will marvel at the mere pittance you had to pay for such greatness.

I use this thing to support a Nikon d700, Nikkor 80-200 mm and a grip--which is a fairly substantial rig. My little aluminum Manfrotto laughs in the face of that weight. It is rated to support 22lbs, but I would wager that is EXTREMELY conservative. I am about the size of your average NFL linemen and I can lean on it very easily.

The flip-locks are great, the concentric screw mount is genius, the finish is awesome and the strap is a nice touch. I opted for the 680B over the 679B because it folds up just a tad smaller. I can secure this monopod under the flap of my gear bag and honestly, I can't even tell it is there.

I could break this pod and replace it five times for what I would pay for a graphite model, and I can't envision this thing ever breaking. It is the TANK of monopods.

If you are in the market for a sturdy monopod that does what you want, when you want it without being obtrusive or breaking the bank...then look no further.

    Monopod

I'm a professional photographer...A little bit of a chunky monopod. One disappointment was that the strap on the monopod fell off after only one use!

Very good, heavy duty monopod. Very well built. I use for long lens on my DSLR. Holds the weight well. The monopod itself is not heavy at all but very sturdy. Easy to carry.

Comments about Manfrotto 680B Compact Monopod:

I purchased the Manfrotto Compact Monopod 680B to supplement my 685B Neotech basically for two reasons. First, I wanted something that allowed me to go lower and also something that was shorter so that it could be attached to my camera bag and be less awkward once attached than the 29+ inch 685B.

I will continue to use the 685B for events, but I do prefer the 680B for Outdoors, some Macro work (like flowers) and for its ability to allow me to go lower. Using the 680B I have found to work very well. I like the gravity assisted drop you can get and usually I drop the first two sections first and then make finer height adjustments with the third, which is more convenient. The monopod has a hefty feel to it, but at under 2 pounds I wouldn't call it heavy. It feels more stable (the upside of mass) and it inspires confidence, probably your most important photographic accessory.

Of course you will need a Manfrotto 234RC Tilt head or otherwise you'll be stuck when trying to do verticals. I also recommend a tripod strap so you can sling it over your shoulder for fast access.

            Conclusion

Although this product probably won't give your basic snob a nosebleed it will certainly do the job that it's designed for and I'll put functionality first anyway.

Comments about Manfrotto 680B Compact Monopod:

I love this pod. My friend got it for me for my birthday some years ago and it's been a staple for me for anything sports. I shoot a lot of baseball and this has been great to hold my D2h and D2Xs cameras with my 80-200 f2.8 af-d lens and 70-200 vr. Also has been great with a giant 300 2.8 lens. It feels great, not too heavy. I love the soft grip. The head that I got is also great so I can plant the pod to the ground and tilt up and down with the head smoothly. My lens has a collar so I can quickly rotate the lens. The pod is there mainly to take the weight off me for long periods of shooting and keeping me stable when I need to lock in on something. It's a pleasure to carry around because it is so light. I'm going to buy another and I definitely recommend it.

This is the first monopod or tripod that I bought. I bought this monopod mainly for video shooting with my D7100. Overall, it is a good monopod, proved to be a very useful addition when shooting video, since otherwise handholding with D7100 produces noticeable shake. It was quite a bit more heavy than I expected, but construction and operation are all well thought out.

Comments about Manfrotto 680B Compact Monopod:

Very solid construction with positive clamping locks. Paired with a ball head makes it handy. Tall enough to stand upright and compact enough to sit on the ground and shoot.

Really stable and heavy duty monopod but still compact and not too heavy to carry around a whole day!
Works also good as a steady cam for camera or gopro

I would say its the best monopod in that price class

WOW!!! Love this tripod. Just took it with me to the UK and this paired with the Manfrotto 234RC head was great. I could keep the plate on the camera and put it on to and take it off the tripod with ease when needed. The ease of adjusting the height was fantastic. I recommend without exception. If I had one thing I would like different, it would be to be lighter, i.e.- made of carbon fiber but I knew buying this that it would be a bit heavier. That said, it fit my backpack perfectly and was not all that heavy.

As with everthing I have urchased from B&H, this is a very solid product. The legs extend easily and lock down without any slippage.

I got this monopod to go with a grip style ball head. I was a little cornered about the overall size of the monopod and thought it might be a little shot. It was taller than I expected and holds up well when needing to move quickly and in tight areas to photograph events.
