The Manfrotto 244 Variable Friction Magic Arm is a fully articulated arm with 90° pivotable and 360° rotatable ends, and an elbow that rotates 360°. The knob allows partial loosening for safe and precise positioning of a light head or camera. It has 5/8" studs on ball joints at both ends with 3/8 and 1/4" female threads. Although it is supplied with a camera platform, it requires a Super Clamp or Base (available separately) for use.

I use this arm when setting up a remote camera for shooting NBA games. I like it much better than the arm with the lever because it gives me much more control when adjusting it in close quarters and making small changes.

Although it does grip super tight and does not slip or become loose whatsoever, I found that when I attached a Canon 5D and a 24-205mm lens, the whole rig wobbles slightly, and it shows up in the photos with blurring and smearing when using it for long exposures, especially when zooming in. I wouldn't recommend it for long exposures with heavier cameras on the end of it.
Also the Empire State Building would not allow it past the security check point no matter what I told them- they knew what it was and don't want cameras being clamped to the fencing.

Comments about Manfrotto 244 Variable Friction Magic Arm with Camera Bracket:

holding lights, holding cameras, reinforcing a large 60 inch Varavon slider so I can use just one tripod vs. two.... had it out 5 times since I bought it and have used it for 5 different things. Solid! for cameras I have mounted a d4/50mm 1.4 and even a Sony FS100/Tokina 12-24 from it without issue. I used it to mount a White Lightning X1600 from a rafter and even a large LED light from a tripod leg for video Folds up small and needs no padding or anything (can't see it getting damaged even if I let it roll around in the trunk for years) so it travels wellWish Manfrotto would just get with the times and go with ARCA style pates and clamps as an option for all of the products they offer

Very sturdy, quite heavy and very nice "Manfrotto" quality.
In combination with the Manfrotto super clamp makes a very versatile camera support.

Comments about Manfrotto 244 Variable Friction Magic Arm with Camera Bracket:

                            Just unpacked it report:
                            • Haven't used it yet, the 4 stars is based soley on my previous good experiences with Manfrotto products purchased from B&H. That said, this unit feels like tough, heavy quality. Much better than the non-Manfrotto units I've used.
                            • But it's hard to understand why it arrived in the condition it did – which seems common to other buyers: with the locking joint almost completely disassembled, and floating freely in the box, NOT contained in a plastic bag to keep small parts from going astray.
                            • The "General Instructions & Warnings" document provided offered only warnings, of the "don't put beans up your nose" variety. NO instructions, guide, picture or diagram of how to assemble the parts. Nothing.
                            • Fortunately, information is available. But I didn't find it at the Manfrotto site, I found it at http://www.snappyjoeblog.com/personal/ma244n_assembly/ . Thanks, Stephen Joe!
                            • I do wish I could swap the female-ended spigots at the ends with male units instead of adding a double-ended spigot, but that's not possible because the ball joints and female spigots are cast as one piece. Means I have to use another piece to hang the arm off a 3/8" female mount in the top of my tripods.

Other than that, I look forward to using this item, and will update the review when I've put some use-hours in.

I am not sure why I never spent the money for a magic arm before now but I am very glad I finally did. I have only scratched the surface of its uses but it has already come in very handy on some assignments. Once use has been to attach a LED video light to my tripod allowing for a nice light ratio on my subject and eliminating the need for an extra light stand in the field. I wish I had one when I was lighting high school basketball gyms every friday night.

Comments about Manfrotto 244 Variable Friction Magic Arm with Camera Bracket:

I needed to take Santa pictures for a school event. Keeping gears to minimum, I wanted something to attach to a light stand. This does the job very well. It is sturdy, and versatile. My concern was about it holding camera well without making me feel it could fall. Platform works well for that. Having one central point to tighten all movement around the arm was really great if I needed to move camera to different position, I could loosen the big nob, move camera to another position and tighten it. It would stay there very securely. Only other feature I wish was there was a quick removal plate on platform. There were time I took camera off the platform and that meant unscrewing it completely. I have only used it once in field but I have no reason to believe it would have any problems in future.

Comments about Manfrotto 244 Variable Friction Magic Arm with Camera Bracket:

This is a great product for mounting a dSLR camera pretty much anywhere the clamp can fit. My main use is for mounting on the backboard at basketball games and mounting it in banquet halls and rooms of the sort for weddings. Very sturdy (can hold a dSLR with battery pack no problem) and hardly moves once you tighten it. Definitely recommend this over the other mounting arm without variable friction. The camera mount supports the camera very well because it is long enough to cover most of the surface area of the bottom of the camera.

I bought this product on recommendation of a user. The clamp was not tight enough to stabilize the arm for use on a wheelchair. I was hoping for stabilization like a tripod which this certanly was not.

This is an extremely useful and well designed photographers tool. Holds my Sony A57 with 75-300mm lens firmly in any position that I place it.
The Impact super clamp must be purchased as an accessory to the Magic Arm. It clamps well on to any surface or railing and holds the Magic Arm and attached camera firmly without any wobble. The whole assembly is very light and portable.
Definitely a 'must have' item for any serious photographer
