This rock-steady head locks easily and securely.

All pan heads fit any Bogen tripod, or any tripod with 3/8" thread. Pan heads screw right on and can also be locked in with the three locking screws in the center post platform of the tripod base.

I've shot pro video and stills for 30 years and this is the head I'm using on 90% of my work now. With the price of so called "pro" equipment the way it is, I would expect to pay double the amount for this quality. I mounted it on my old 3046 tripod thats been in the corner for 10 years and it is now my main tripod for my Nikon D300 and DX2.

I use this head with my gitzo carbon fiber legs to support my 4x5 monorail camera. It is a strong tripod head, the grips on the handles are a good shape. Brand new, one gear was tighter than the rest of them, making it more difficult to make fine adjustments. This is frustrating and I am hoping that with more use, the tight gear will get more lubricated/looser.

Comments about Manfrotto 229 Super Pro Head - Supports 26.5 lbs (12kg):

This head is a workhorse at my place of employment. We've used these for years and they only occasionally break (usually from being dropped). They are pretty heavy duty and hold medium format cameras easily. They even hold large format cameras (Sinar) with ease.

The only negative thing, which isn't really a negative, is that they're are pretty heavy. If you're looking for something to travel with, I wouldn't recommend this one. Too big and bulky. Other than that, this is a great one.

    Nice, smooth, heavy pan head

    By DVZ

Comments about Manfrotto 229 Super Pro Head - Supports 26.5 lbs (12kg):

I use this in studio for product shots.
I like the smooth motion and the ability to accurately square my camera to the product.
It's rock solid especially for DSLRs with long lenses, almost over kill but I like that.
The only drawback is; it doesn't tilt up very much for those low angle shots, because the handle hits its own base. I have had to turn the camera 180° on the head and then I get all the tilt I need, but it's a little awkward because now the handles are not where you expect them. Most times you won't run into this situation, but there is that work around.

We have three stations with this ball head that are used daily for 8+hours and they never loosen or get off kilter. I would buy 10 more of the same if needed! Highly recommend.

Comments about Manfrotto 229 Super Pro Head - Supports 26.5 lbs (12kg):

I have the older 3039 head, which is similar, and if you are not aware of this, you should know that all the tensions on this head can be adjusted. It is similar to the old 4047 three way head, but it uses a different handle arrangement with adjustable tension. Under the handles for pan and tilt you will find 13 millimeter nuts, and on the back side of the horizontal tilt, another nut. Changing the tension of those nuts will set the drag for that axis when the handle is released. If one axis is stiff or loose for your purposes, you can tune it to how fast you want your equipment to move. It's ideal for big heavy lenses that flop on other heads, though it is too slow to follow action well.

For the horizontal tilt you will need a very thin walled socket. The others can be done with a wrench.

I've been using this and the predecessor, Bogen 3047, on all of the tripods we have for large format (4x5) in my university photo program for many years. This is the ultimate professional tripod head. Virtually indestructible, smooth movements, easy usage. A pleasure to work with.

I have used nearly all kinds of tripod heads from ball heads to geared heads. If you have a medium-format camera and want to have non-blurred images due to the tripod being light and hard to use, this head is for you.

I keep my light weight sirui ball head just incase I need to travel by myself..

I've had trouble keeping my Nikon D7000 with 70-300 lens steady on my old school tripod. Upgraded to a Manfrotto 055 series tripod and topped it off with The 229 Super Pro head, problem solved! I can't say a bad thing about this product, even adjusts all the way to shoot vertical which my old head wouldn't do.

Comments about Manfrotto 229 Super Pro Head - Supports 26.5 lbs (12kg):

I find this to be a great tripod head for use with my heavy macro setups. The movement is smooth in all directions and locks solidly with a simple twist of the handle. The head is heavy but is to be expected since it is designed for heavy setups.

The only thing I had to get used to was the large handles but I will say that the 229 Super Pro Head does a beautiful job.

Comments about Manfrotto 229 Super Pro Head - Supports 26.5 lbs (12kg):

Have owned this head for three years or so. Had another one in 1999.

The handles are uncomfortable cheap junk made to meet a price point. I replaced mine with one and three quarter inch billiard balls. Just right. I don't recommend regulation size. Tried those for a while but eventually removed them. The handles were too long.

One reviewer complains of a sticky, or tight, gear. Do not use oil, or expect it to wear in. Oil will cause further tightening and scoring. I had to partially disassemble mine and remove the scoring. So what to do? Obtain a 13mm thin wall socket wrench. Remove the plastic cap in front of the unit, and adjust the now visible nut.

For crying out loud, MANFROTTO, where is the quality control?!?

                      It is needlessly heavy.

I like it for two reasons: good clamping holds well, and the more I use Manfrotto's RCzero q/r system the more I appreciate it. SNAP!

Very stable and solid. Have one (3039 model) for almost 7 years, now need to replace it...
