Product Highlights
  • For Select Nikon DX-Format (APS-C) DSLRs
  • f/2.8 Aperture throughout Zoom Range
  • Ultra Wide Angle Zoom
  • One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism
  • 9-Blade Aperture Diaphragm

The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs is an ultra wide angle, short zoom range lens specifically designed for use with select Nikon DX-format digital SLR cameras. The slightly shorter zoom range of this lens over the popular and award winning 12-24mm lens makes it possible to maintain optical quality even at wide-open apertures. This lens features a fast constant aperture of f/2.8, and provides a focal length equivalent to 16.5-24mm in 35mm format.

As part of the AT-X line, this lens is designed to provide excellent optical quality, and offers advanced features like the WR (Water Resistant) front element, its One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism, that allows the photographer to switch between AF and MF simply by snapping the focus ring forward for AF and back toward the camera to focus manually. Also, it has a 9-bladed aperture for smooth out of focus areas.

Camera Compatibility
Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras or digital cameras with image sensor larger than APS-C size (e.g. D4, D700, D800).

Autofocus not supported on cameras that lack a drive motor, including the D40, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300, D5000, D5100, D5200, and D5300.
WR Coating
WR (Water Resistant) coating made of a special compound has been applied to the front surface of the lens through the use of a unique evaporation process. As a result, the lens offers excellent water- and oil-repellent performance and makes for easier cleaning should the lens be accidentally smeared with fingerprints or cosmetics.
One Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism
The One Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows for fast and easy switching between manual and auto focus from any position. This improvement means that it is not necessary to change the AF/MF switch (on the body with Nikon or the lens with Canon) every time the lens is changed from auto focus to manual focus mode.
9-Blade Aperture
The rounded diaphragm opening (9 blades) makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural.

Even though it's a really wide lens, the 11-16 doesn't shine when you "get it all in" in a really wide vista, but rather when you have something in the foreground that is set against a background that is rendered "too small".

That said, the lens is only a teeny bit soft at f2.8 (TOTALLY useable though) and sharpens up nicely already at f4. f5.6 and f8 are just great, no reason to shoot beyond that, as diffraction sets in as early as f11. Distortion is well controlled, there is no problem with falloff from f4 on (even at f2.8 I don't notice it in many photos).

All in all, this is a really sharp lens that takes great photos. You need to come up with new ways to shoot with a lens like this, but it's so much fun to be stretched like this. It's built like a tank (much more solid than the competing lenses from Sigma and Tamron, very much like the Tokina 12-24 f4, too. It's not a great big zoom range, so if you want a lens that strays from wide into semi-"normal" territory... this isn't it. If you want great ultra-wide images, it is.

The only reason I didn't give this lens five stars is that with such a small zoom range it isn't very versatile, but it's image quality is great.

I will first state I am totally amateur so issues may be operator. The lens does not seem sharp. I comapared it with my 18-105 kit lens (18mm vs 16mm)and the kit lens is much sharper. I made a few fine focus adjustments in my Nikon D-7000, will see if that improves anything.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs:

I bought this to use for nighttime cityscape shots, and I am not disappointed. It produces clean, crisp images in low light, and it does what I want when I use it. Flare is an issue in bright sunlight, so I use the hood during the occasional day use. It is build very well, and feels solid. I am happy with this one.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs:

Picked this lens up for the cheaper price knowing it did not have it's own motor for AF or any VR capabilities, works fine on an old D200 and D610. The speed alone, f/2.8, makes the lens totally worthwhile. Not as sharp as nikkor glass (based on one wedding shoot) but seems better than Tamron or Sigma wide zooms I've owned in the past. Be careful getting up in the sun and creating off color and very noticeable iris reflections - a standard problem with wide, even with a lens shade on. I don't get married to my equipment, they come and go as the needs arise, so I handed it to my daughter for keeps and will save up for a pricier nikkor. For indoor wides and landscapes a great buy. You can get up very close and have nice Depth of Field stopped down, or go for unfocused backgrounds wide open. Wished to do some night sky but didn't have the time before it parted for the west coast.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs:

I purchased this lens from B&H after a lot of research, while also considering the Nikon 10-24mm zoom. I will be using this lens on a Nikon D7000 for landscape, astrophotography and HDR photography. Also hoping to do some WA close-up work with lens mounted on a Nikon PK-11A (haven't tried it yet). I have been doing photography as consumer & professional for over 40 years. I also own most of Nikon fixed-length, manual focus Nikkor wide-angle lenses left over from my days shooting film with F2, F3 & FM. This is my first non-Nikon for Nikon lens purchase so I was somewhat skeptical of Tokina.

I am very pleased with the quality build and the range of the zoom. I've had this lens for a couple weeks and I am exploring the capabilities that this lens allows for wide-angle photos. I especially like the design of the focus ring to allow quick switch between auto & manual focus.

The lens seems sharp with fairly low distortion even at 11 mm. Color and details are crisp and focus is real quick. I think I am finding the limitations of my D7000 and have started to think about the D7100. An example of what this lens is capable of doing can be found at Flickr website.

So far I do not have negatives to report other than:
                1) it would be great if lenses came with a case. For that, I can recommend the LowePro 9x13cm case but this case is not large enough to also hold the sunshade included with the lens.
                2) Missing a manual focus lock at infinity (especially useful at night for astrophotography).
                3) Close focus distance is less than I would like but I can live with this.

As for B&H, the lens was shipped quickly and arrived nicely packaged without incident, as usual from B&H Photo.

I am using this on a Panasonic GH4 with Metabones Speedbooster. The image is great especially on a glidecam. BUT.. there is a lack of sharpness in the video. Even when it is in focus, it looks a little soft. Panasonic GH4 users are very keen on the sharpness of their camera. This lens make it a bit organic. I mount this on to a follow focus system. The manual focus ring slides in and out too quickly. It's built quality is very high. Nice solid lens.

With the addition of this lens, I now have excellent coverage from 11 mm all the way up to 300 mm. I no longer need to crave for the FX system. This lens is so versatile and produces such startling results, that I'm now happy to stick to my Nikon DX system.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs:

I have alway used nikons lenses. They are always sharper than the others on the market, but when I decided to get a wide angle zoom, I didnt want to pay $. So I thought I would give the Tokina a shot at $. Glad I did! I would say its as sharp as my nikon zooms, and the build quality is rather impressive.

The Tokina has nearly replaced my Nikon kit lens. My intention was to use it for some star photography, but all of that changed when I started taking some street photos. Consistently tack-sharp and quick to focus.

This is my first wide-angle lens, and I have not been let down! The image quality is really nice, great fast 2.8 shutter, minimal to no edge blur(i actually haven't seen any yet). Love this lens.

Works great photographing interiors of my residential rental units in the Boston, MA area. Should have made this purchase years ago instead of getting by with my Sigma 28-70 zoom.

I'll put it to the test next month during my two week Danube River cruise in Central Europe. Can better evaluate after more "hands on."

I really don't think there's any other better than this one. Acceptable sharp, easy to correct distortion, relatively fast, extremely well built and good ergonomics. I gave it 4 stars but honestly, i don't think 5 stars exists in its category
