The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs is an ultra wide angle, short zoom range lens specifically designed for use with select Nikon DX-format digital SLR cameras. The slightly shorter zoom range of this lens over the popular and award winning 12-24mm lens makes it possible to maintain optical quality even at wide-open apertures. This lens features a fast constant aperture of f/2.8, and provides a focal length equivalent to 16.5-24mm in 35mm format.

As part of the AT-X line, this lens is designed to provide excellent optical quality, and offers advanced features like the WR (Water Resistant) front element, its One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism, that allows the photographer to switch between AF and MF simply by snapping the focus ring forward for AF and back toward the camera to focus manually. Also, it has a 9-bladed aperture for smooth out of focus areas.

Camera Compatibility
Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras or digital cameras with image sensor larger than APS-C size (e.g. D4, D700, D800).

Autofocus not supported on cameras that lack a drive motor, including the D40, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300, D5000, D5100, D5200, and D5300.
WR Coating
WR (Water Resistant) coating made of a special compound has been applied to the front surface of the lens through the use of a unique evaporation process. As a result, the lens offers excellent water- and oil-repellent performance and makes for easier cleaning should the lens be accidentally smeared with fingerprints or cosmetics.
One Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism
The One Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows for fast and easy switching between manual and auto focus from any position. This improvement means that it is not necessary to change the AF/MF switch (on the body with Nikon or the lens with Canon) every time the lens is changed from auto focus to manual focus mode.
9-Blade Aperture
The rounded diaphragm opening (9 blades) makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural.

I purchased this lens from B&H after a lot of research, while also considering the Nikon 10-24mm zoom. I will be using this lens on a Nikon D7000 for landscape, astrophotography and HDR photography. Also hoping to do some WA close-up work with lens mounted on a Nikon PK-11A (haven't tried it yet). I have been doing photography as consumer & professional for over 40 years. I also own most of Nikon fixed-length, manual focus Nikkor wide-angle lenses left over from my days shooting film with F2, F3 & FM. This is my first non-Nikon for Nikon lens purchase so I was somewhat skeptical of Tokina.

I am very pleased with the quality build and the range of the zoom. I've had this lens for a couple weeks and I am exploring the capabilities that this lens allows for wide-angle photos. I especially like the design of the focus ring to allow quick switch between auto & manual focus.

The lens seems sharp with fairly low distortion even at 11 mm. Color and details are crisp and focus is real quick. I think I am finding the limitations of my D7000 and have started to think about the D7100. An example of what this lens is capable of doing can be found at Flickr website.

So far I do not have negatives to report other than:
    1) it would be great if lenses came with a case. For that, I can recommend the LowePro 9x13cm case but this case is not large enough to also hold the sunshade included with the lens.
    2) Missing a manual focus lock at infinity (especially useful at night for astrophotography).
    3) Close focus distance is less than I would like but I can live with this.

As for B&H, the lens was shipped quickly and arrived nicely packaged without incident, as usual from B&H Photo.

I will first state I am totally amateur so issues may be operator. The lens does not seem sharp. I comapared it with my 18-105 kit lens (18mm vs 16mm)and the kit lens is much sharper. I made a few fine focus adjustments in my Nikon D-7000, will see if that improves anything.

My main purpose for this lens is to take landscape photos in New England. As reported, the lens is very sharp, has a good build and lens movements are smooth. This lens is not the version with internal focusing AF so is limited to Nikon cameras that have built-in autofocus.

I've now used this lens for landscape and astrophotography. Some have mentioned that these lenses are soft in the corners, but given the nature of the lens, that is to be expected. I honestly can't see any obvious softness. This lens has been sharp to the edges, even in the various astrophotos I've taken. The stars are pinpoints across the whole image. I just wish I had this lens for last years Persied meteor shower. I am sure I would have captured a lot more meteors given the wide angle and speed of this lens. Highly satisfied.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs:

I recently down-sized my stock of Nikon lenses. I needed to fill a wide-angle void as a result of the down-sizing.

I read other reviews of this lens, on B&H website and other photo websites. The reviews seemed to indicate it was a good choice. I plan to use it in landscapes and waterscapes work.

So far, it seems to perform well. I haven't noticed the "softness" one of the other reviewers had noticed.

It has done a good job out in the brilliant snow landscapes I recently have been shooting.

It is a heavy lens though.

Very good for photographing cityscapes, especially at night as it is a fast lens, and also for interior photograpyhy.Pictures made by this lens usually have very good colors. The only drawback is the focus, it is a little bit slow, and seeks a lot looking for the correct focal length.

It's built like a tank. Very sturdy. Smooth control too. I can't wait to use this for some astro photography. The push pull manual/auto focus on the focus ring is really nice too. For the cost this is a very well built fast lens. The aperture gives beautiful star bursts when stopped down, and great bokeh wide open. The removable lens hood will help those shooting on FX bodies. This lens is a must have for anyone needing something wider than most normal wide angle or kit lenses. Great product!!! Make some room for it in your bag and go get one.

I shoot a lot of sunsets and could not get the whole picture in my frame, no problem now with this lens. I love my new lens and would definitely recommend it to a friend or an enemy. I would give it a five star rating.

The lens feels sturdy, has great sharpness and an awesome dof. I really like it. The true test will be how it delivers on my forthcoming hiking trip in Oregon, but i have no doubts it'll be wonderful. Great investment, esp for the price.

I bought this to use for nighttime cityscape shots, and I am not disappointed. It produces clean, crisp images in low light, and it does what I want when I use it. Flare is an issue in bright sunlight, so I use the hood during the occasional day use. It is build very well, and feels solid. I am happy with this one.

Works great for landscapes and any outdoor photography. I am getting quite a bit of distortion when taking images inside in close quarters as the lens tries to 'take it all in'.

Picked this lens up for the cheaper price knowing it did not have it's own motor for AF or any VR capabilities, works fine on an old D200 and D610. The speed alone, f/2.8, makes the lens totally worthwhile. Not as sharp as nikkor glass (based on one wedding shoot) but seems better than Tamron or Sigma wide zooms I've owned in the past. Be careful getting up in the sun and creating off color and very noticeable iris reflections - a standard problem with wide, even with a lens shade on. I don't get married to my equipment, they come and go as the needs arise, so I handed it to my daughter for keeps and will save up for a pricier nikkor. For indoor wides and landscapes a great buy. You can get up very close and have nice Depth of Field stopped down, or go for unfocused backgrounds wide open. Wished to do some night sky but didn't have the time before it parted for the west coast.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs:
