Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs

You Pay: $449.00

NOT recommended for use with "full-frame" FX digital or 35mm film SLR cameras. AF not supported by D40, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000 and D5100 cameras.

Product Highlights
  • For Select Nikon DX-Format (APS-C) DSLRs
  • f/2.8 Aperture throughout Zoom Range
  • Ultra Wide Angle Zoom
  • One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism
  • 9-Blade Aperture Diaphragm

The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs is an ultra wide angle, short zoom range lens specifically designed for use with digital SLR cameras. The slightly shorter zoom range of this lens over the popular and award winning 12-24mm lens makes it possible to maintain optical quality even at wide-open apertures. This lens features a fast constant aperture of f/2.8, and provides a focal length equivalent to 16.5-24mm in 35mm format.

As part of the AT-X line, this lens is designed to provide excellent optical quality, and offers advanced features like the WR (Water Resistant) front element, its One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism, that allows the photographer to switch between AF and MF simply by snapping the focus ring forward for AF and back toward the camera to focus manually. There is no need to change the AF-MF switch on Nikon cameras and a 9-bladed aperture. The excellent lens for short closeup photography.

Note: This lens is NOT waterproof. The 'WR Coating' adds water-resistant protection to the front element only.

Note! Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras or digital cameras with image sensor bigger than APS-C size (e.g. D3, D700, D800). AF not supported by D40, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000 and D5100 or any other Nikon digital body that does not have a built-in auto-focus drive gear.

WR Coating
WR (Water Resistant) coating made of a special compound has been applied to the front surface of the lens through the use of a unique evaporation process. As a result, the lens offers excellent water- and oil-repellent performance and makes for easier cleaning should the lens be accidentally smeared with fingerprints or cosmetics.

Note: This lens is NOT waterproof. The 'WR Coating' adds water-resistant protection to the front element only.

One Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism
The One Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows for fast and easy switching between manual and auto focus from any position. This improvement means that it is not necessary to change the AF/MF switch (on the body with Nikon or the lens with Canon) every time the lens is changed from auto focus to manual focus mode.
9-Blade Aperture
The rounded diaphragm opening (9 blades) makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural.

Even though it's a really wide lens, the 11-16 doesn't shine when you "get it all in" in a really wide vista, but rather when you have something in the foreground that is set against a background that is rendered "too small".

That said, the lens is only a teeny bit soft at f2.8 (TOTALLY useable though) and sharpens up nicely already at f4. f5.6 and f8 are just great, no reason to shoot beyond that, as diffraction sets in as early as f11. Distortion is well controlled, there is no problem with falloff from f4 on (even at f2.8 I don't notice it in many photos).

All in all, this is a really sharp lens that takes great photos. You need to come up with new ways to shoot with a lens like this, but it's so much fun to be stretched like this. It's built like a tank (much more solid than the competing lenses from Sigma and Tamron, very much like the Tokina 12-24 f4, too. It's not a great big zoom range, so if you want a lens that strays from wide into semi-"normal" territory... this isn't it. If you want great ultra-wide images, it is.

The only reason I didn't give this lens five stars is that with such a small zoom range it isn't very versatile, but it's image quality is great.

I've used this product for landscape and night photography. This lens wide open is a bit soft but when stopped down it is pretty sharp. My results conflict the previous reviews (@wide aperture). I still need to do more shooting with this lens. Overall, it is a good lens but definitely not what everyone is hyping it up to be (IMHO) but I do intend to keep it. I like the wide end.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs:

I had the Tokina 12-24 for a few years and liked it, especially the zoom range, but ended up replacing it with this lens. After using it for about a month now I can say that the 11-16 is better. It's not just the fact that it's one stop faster but that it's sharper. The only down side is the limited zoom range.
As far as flare is concerned comparing this lens to the Tokina 12-24 and Nikon 16-35, which I use on a d700, I don't notice anything to be alarmed at. It's mainly being used for weddings and events, so, landscape photographers may have a different opinion.

For those who want/can appreciate a fast ultra-wide-angle lens, this one ticks all the boxes. The restricted zoom is the price you pay for excellent optics, and whilst a little soft at the widest aperture, the lens performs generally very well, and represents excellent value compared to the Nikon equivalent. Highly recommended.

Most "standard" lenses give photographers a little bit of room between them and their subjects. This lens forces you to rethink how you take pictures. The really wide angle forces you to get in the middle of the action. I did a comparison with this lens set at 11mm and a 28mm lens with a coffee mug 1' away. The Tokina got all of the cup and the rest of the room while the 28mm lens only got about half the cup. Talk about a different perspective. This lens has made me get closer and think about how the rest of the world shows up in my photos. I tend to take fewer shots because I want to make sure the rest of the frame has meaning and that takes more planning. So far, the lens hasn't skipped a beat. I will be testing it on a Caribbean island soon and that should prove interesting.

I bought this lens to allow me to get up close with whatever it was that was shooting as my 24-70 would not allow me to get some of the shots I desired. When I first started using it the autofocus was a little loud but has become rather quite in the past few sessions I've used it. The ability to use this lens in tight places, such as creek beds filled with rhododendron, allows me to get the shots I want with. The only downside is that the autofocus is not 100% accurate all the time and leaves some photos slightly out of focus. Great glass for the money and i would recommend it to anyone.

I recently took pics of fireworks and couldn't believe how they came out. the wide angle is perfect in capturing everything needed. No more splicing pics together. easy to use and a ton of how too's if you have questions are available.

My experience is limited so far but my initial reaction is very favorable. Image quality is good even if my composition is lacking. I have been into photography for 40 plus years, strictly as a hobbiest. This lens looks like fun and I am looking forward to learning its secrets

Wanted to cover Burj Khalifa, the tallest tower in the world along with my family. Have a 18-250 on a D90 body but the 18 wouldn't cover half of the tower with my family inside the frame. This one is so wide, I am still trying to get my head around it.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs:

I bought this lens to be used for landscape photography, as it is an aspherical lens. I find the angle to be amazing, giving me a much larger picture without the fear of anything being distorted. That is one reason this lens is so great: It's not a fisheye but gives you almost as much as one. That was very important to me. I originally found out about this lens when I searched through photos online. It is fantastic, and i mean fantastic, for long-exposure and well-lit landscapes/subjects. Now, the F/2.8 is very nice though it does reveal some negative aspects to this lens.

For instance, this is not a lens that will provide clear low-light photos at normal shutter speeds. In fact, it is not a lens that should be used to focus on small subjects within a picture because once you zoom in to view that specific subject it will be quite pixelated. This lens is supposed to be used and is meant for the wide range. Therefore, it has a range from 11-16mm. Also, when using a flash you need to realize that it projects a shadow onto the ground...little unfortunate...but then again, it's not a macro lens, or one for close range photography.

Now, if you think that an 18mm (let's say on 18-105 or the like) is enough for you then that's fine. I didn't think it would be enough. And this is why: The wider the angle the more noticeable the differences will be from one range to the next. So, going from 18mm to this new 11mm gives you a MUCH wider range and more things in your picture. 11mm should not be underestimated. It's very useful.

That said, this lens has provided some of the best pictures I have ever seen on crop sensor dslr's. Anything from a starlit sky, to a large family photo, to excellent examples of a large depth of field. And I have YET to hear anything bad about this lens!!! Since one of the ranges is "infinity" it will put every subject into focus (Personally, i prefer landscape photos without much bokeh as I try to capture as much as possible-that's what my prime lenses are for). I'm sure you will be glad to have this.

Lastly, I have been very impressed with the build quality. Buying lenses from a secondary lens maker (i.e. not nikon or canon), may cause some concern for people not wanting to pay over $400. Let me tell you that this is one of the most solid and compact lenses I have ever put my hands on. It feels as stable as the Nikon 70-200 or one of the other lenses you'll be breaking the bank for. It adds a nice weight, but I prefer that over a lightweight and brittle lens.

I am still at the beginning of learning how this lens works, so these are merely my first impressions. However, I hope it helped.

One last note: People are often trying to decide between the DX and DXII versions. If you have a built-in motor (Nikon D7k series, or the Canon equivalent) then I would just get the DX and save a $100. If you don't, definitely make sure you get the DXII version as you probably do not want to continuously be focusing manually.

Comments about Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Nikon DX-Format DSLRs:

I use this lens in conjunction with a Metabones Speedbooster adapter on my GH3, which makes it a 8-12mm f2. It's a fantastic combination. But even if you don't have the Speedbooster this is still a great lens. Fast & wide with full manual control and a little zoom to boot! It's got a little distortion around the edges but that's almost unavoidable at this wide angle. The only drawback is that it doesn't have an infinity hard stop, meaning that focusing for infinity (stars, moon, distant mountains, etc) you'll have to hit the hard stop on the focus ring and then back it off just a smidgen. I use this lens a lot for night sky time lapses, so I encounter this limitation often. Not ideal, but for this price I'm not complaining. It's also great for interior design / real estate shots due to its wide angle.

Tried some shots with this lens at 11mm and 16mm and with aperture set to f2.8 and f8. Results were quite good and compared favorably with my Nikkor 18-200 lens set at 18mm and comparable f stop. Lens vuild quality is excellent. this is the first non Nikkor lens I have bought in 40 years and I'm pleased.
