The Manfrotto 161MK2B Super Pro Tripod is one of the tallest in the Manfrotto line of tripods, and is capable of supporting cameras up to 44 lb (20 kg), at a height of 8.75'. It is the ideal large format tripod for home and studio use, and works especially well with the 160 (3057) Professional Head.

The 161MK2's center column is geared for easy, accurate adjustment. This tripod can easily handle an 8x10 view camera even at full height and precarious angles.

The built-in mid-level spreader adds anti-torsional rigidity and stops the tripod legs from accidentally being knocked wider apart. Compared to a ground-level spreader or dolly, the mid-level spreader has the advantage that it stays well out of the mud and dirt and is more suitable for use on uneven terrain.
The geared center column allows for safe and precise height adjustments.
The three set screws in the camera platform can be used to permanently secure the head to the tripod, providing additional security.
The twist locks are slightly slower to use than the more common "Quick Action" flip lever leg locks, but give total control over locking force. In addition, they are much easier to service out in the field.

Comments about Manfrotto 161MK2B Super Pro Tripod:

This tripod is a monster, and I LOVE it.
I got this beast for two main reasons:
    1. I needed a high vantage point for the shooting I do
    2. I needed a STABLE platform for my camera, to accommodate consistent frame alignment while shooting over a period of some time.

This tripod is VERY satisfying to attach my camera to. It's completely stable and solid, resisting light accidental kicks and other forces that have interfered with my camera's stability on lesser tripods in the past.

And the most satisfying thing of all is that it remains stable even at VERY tall heights.

I may be in the minority in thinking this heavy thing is worth lugging around, and I certainly wouldn't advise folks to think of this as their one and only tripod - it's probably more of a special circumstance tool for most people... but I'm so taken with the stability of it that I'm probably going to bring this with me to every shoot from now on.

I was a tiny bit surprised to realize (even after reading the specifications) that fully collapsed, this tripod still spans the full width of the back seat of my car. So, it's a commitment to bring with you, to be sure. But it's well worth the effort, I'm finding.

Comments about Manfrotto 161MK2B Super Pro Tripod:

I bought this because after 9 years my previous Manfrotto tripod broke where the upper and lower legs join. I needed something sturdier. This tripod is definitely set up for heavy duty support. My only complaint is, I have to open and close the legs every day in my studio. I wish I could just loosen one lock for all three legs.

Comments about Manfrotto 161MK2B Super Pro Tripod:

As an architectural photographer, height is something that I just can't get around sometimes. This tripod is great. Heavy, but great. It dwarfs my D800, so it looks a bit funny, but so what. I've paired it with my standard 410 head, so it's perfect for what I need it for. Will it travel with me? Probably not. I'll be sticking with my good old trusty 3236 for that. It may go with me on some shoots, but not many.

Good value and adaptable tripod. I also bought the Manfrotto 181B folding dolly, which seems to work well so far!

My application is pretty unique. I needed a tall tripod to hold a special motor which spins a boom around in a continuous circle which holds a special microphone in an acoustic measurement chamber. This tripod is perfect. It doesn't wobble and more importantly for me, it doesn't make noise!

This is the best tripod on the market. I am approaching twenty five years as a pro and I have tried nearly all the tripods on the market. I own many but this is my go-to pod of tri! I use this about 98% of my working time as a pro.

If you are thinking about it just get it, you wont regret it. Its heavy but thats a good thing.

It also is brilliant with a dolley.

                      I cant recommend it enough.

Comments about Manfrotto 161MK2B Super Pro Tripod:

I use the Super Pro indoors and out. The adjustable feet go from rubber to spike quickly. With the support rods connected to the center column and the legs, the adjustments make a rock-solid base at any height in the range. And the maximum height adjustment, to almost nine feet with tripod head, requiring a ladder or other means to raise oneself that high, provides just as steady an arrangement as if one set to the minimum 17-inches. So the the tripod is perfect for high-angle group shots or low-angle macro shots in the outdoors. Neither wind nor ordinary vibration affect the solid settings. One cannot in good conscience complain this is a heavy tripod. One gets this tripod BECAUSE it is heavy (around 20-lbs with head, more with camera.

Very good Tripod, is made for doing what its meant to be, i think its the most stable tripod on the market.

Pros: Can carry very heavy stuff, like medium and large format cameras, big lenses, astronomy equipment. Very stable. Has a wide range of height.

Cons: This thing is like a tank, extremely heavy, not for very long walks in the field.

Coclusion: It gets 4 stars because of the weight, the rest is just perfect, couldnt be better i think

Comments about Manfrotto 161MK2B Super Pro Tripod:

I have a variety of monopods and tripods, including carbon fiber, but for times when you need a tall platform for large groups (such as at a conference when you can't put the audience on risers, or a school class), the extra height is great for keeping a steady, blur-free base. Because of the height and the climb down from a step ladder required to adjust the bottom legs, the geared center column lets me provide a foot's worth of adjustment quickly. When I'm using larger glass, such as my 800mm when birding, I load it up with the heavy glass, a large DSLR, and a solid gimbal-type head that itself adds several more pounds. The geared column and locking crossbars add safety when dealing with heavy loads especially, as the crossbars prevent the weight from splaying out the legs and collapsing, and the geared column a way of adjusting height without the risk of one of the leg sections getting away from you and collapsing. The legs are aluminum, but apparently have some steel components, as others I've seen in the field have rusty screws, especially the coastal area where I use this. A thorough cleaning with a damp cloth after outdoor use, and storage in a bag is advised.

Not only it's a great tripod by itself, but if you use the Manfrotto 325N Video Head Adapter Bowl for a 100mm Bowl it becomes an excellent video tripod!! (if you need a 75mm to 100mm Bowl Adapter get the Manfrotto 319)

Comments about Manfrotto 161MK2B Super Pro Tripod:

I bought this to hold a gimbal head for shooting eagles and other wildlife. I didn't want light and flimsy, I wanted heavy and solid. Boy is this thing both. I feel like I could hit it with a car and still not get flapping on it.
I've done a 2 mile hike with it and towards the end, the tripod with a gimbal head, 1DmkIIn, and Bigma started to get a bit on the heavy end. However, it's an easy setup and solid as a rock.
