The Manfrotto 058B Aluminum Triaut Tripod is a professional tripod ideal for use with medium format and 4x5" cameras. It features a built-in bubble level, and automatic leg release system which allows for simultaneous or individual release of the leg sections. This system permits the legs to be extended and the tripod leveled and locked in seconds without the need for individual leg adjustments. Telescoping the legs is achieved by activating the same release.

Mid-Level Spreader
The built-in mid-level spreader adds anti-torsional rigidity and stops the tripod legs from accidentally being knocked wider apart. Compared to a ground-level spreader or dolly, the mid-level spreader has the advantage that it stays well out of the mud and dirt and is more suitable for use on uneven terrain
Geared Center Column
The geared center column has a non-roll back feature, and allows for safe and precise height adjustments
Set Screws
The three set screws in the camera platform can be used to permanently secure the head to the tripod, providing additional security
Foldaway Handle
Its foldaway handle avoids damage during transport

I am an architectural photographer shooting digital and 4x5. It is much faster and easier than anything I have used for quick leg adjustments, especially on uneven surfaces. Studio stand style height adjustability for a decent distance.

However extending the lower legs is nearly impossible with a camera on the tropod. It takes 2 hands.

Add a gear head and you have an awesome set. But heavy, that doesn't bother me, but it may be too much for some. On the other hand that weight can be an asset for stability.

We bought this product because it has the red easy adjust buttons. We already have an old one. We bought a new one because the red levers broke on the old one and we have had it repaired several times.
When the new one came the red buttons were broken in the box. We ordered another new one and the 2nd tripod has a leg that doesn't drop down with the other 2 legs. How frustrating!!! So we are sending back the 1st new one and we are trying to fix the 2nd new tripod. WE NEED IT.

Comments about Manfrotto 058B Aluminum Triaut Tripod:

This thing can go up, way up, tall enough to take pictures of Rusty (inside joke) - 3 steps up on a 4' tall ladder (watch your balance) .... or way down (not to the ground but low enough). It sets up like a charm, quick rease levers are fast and you can do one at a time or all three at once (you have choices). Geared center column is wonderful! It is a brute! You will not be lugging this thing up a 5 mile trail to use. How far you carry it is dependant upon how macho you are or how many porters you have.It is everything I wanted in a studio grade tripod that does not move, shimmy or shake because you touched it. Yes you can take it out on shoots, by all means, just remember it's heavy compared to that field tripod you have been using up till now. If you need to pack it, it comes with a handy, functional carrying strap but I would recommend a large tripod case if there is any serious traveling involved.Works absolutely wonderful with a robust gear or fluid head (actually any substantial sized head). No cons - it is a heavy, huge range of adjustment, easy to use, solid studio grade tripod. Not for all around use because of it's mass, get a lighter weight unit for that (been there, done that, have them, like them - all in the right setting).

Comments about Manfrotto 058B Aluminum Triaut Tripod:

Its big. Its heavy. Its rock-solid stable, even with 26+ lbs. of gear mounted, including large pano-head, camera and BIG lens all being buffeted by 25+ MPH wind gusts out on the open high-plains. It stands firm, and does what's its supposed to do . . . not move or shake or vibrate. This beast has that covered in spades and then some. Its not for casual shooting, though. I'd use something lighter for those needs. Good price too. Get what you pay for. Highly recommended.

Comments about Manfrotto 058B Aluminum Triaut Tripod:

I'm 6'6" tall. This was just one of three tripods that I found that could reach up to me instead of me going down to it. For the past year or so I've been into pan photography...I like to shoot more than what I can see through the viewfinder...and needed a tripod that could stand up to windy conditions with pan head and camera attached. This past weekend, at my parents house in New Smyrna Beach, FL, I had the opportunity to test it out in 15 to 20 mph gust. Didn't budge an inch. Great shots, great tripod. I highly recommend this tripod...especially for those of us who are vertically challenged on the plus side (it goes up to 85").

Comments about Manfrotto 058B Aluminum Triaut Tripod:

Extremely easy to use tripod that is perfect for the studio. You will have to decide if the extra convenience of the tripod is worth the extra carrying weight if you are using the tripod outside of the studio.

The automatic leg release system works as advertised. Simply press the red lever on each leg to adjust each leg individually or press/rotate the center levers to release all legs simultaneously. The simultaneous release can be a little unwieldy since you will be holding the full weight of the tripod while you adjust.

I would recommend combining the tripod with one of manfrotto's geared heads such as the 405 or 410 heads. Also a manfrotto dolly such as the 181 will also help to keep the legs from moving out of position when adjusting. I personally added an arca type quick release place between my tripod and the head. This allows you to disconnect the head for to move easier. You will also likely want a bag for storage such as the Manfrotto 120cm bag.

That all being said the two negatives of the tripod are the questionable durability of the plastic leg release levers and the lack of anti rotation when extending the third leg segments.

Comments about Manfrotto 058B Aluminum Triaut Tripod:

Rock solid and very strong. I do a lot of macro work professionally and needed a new studio tripod. This one is great because at its normal height it is perfect for my table top and I can adjust the legs outward if I need to lower the platform. The total height is something I don't think I will ever need but it is there if you are willing to carry this thing around. I am using it with an 058 ball head which is also very strong and matches well with this tripod. Those who have to shoot outdoors and need a solid platform for either DSLR or Video should consider this product. The automatic leg extender switches will get some getting used to but should't take you long to figure it out. It is a neat feature althoug maybe not as practicle as I thought it would be. Anyway it is there and works well.

It was really easy to just pop it up to full height when she walked down the aisle and then slide it right back down to human height for the remainder of the ceremony.PROS:ridiculously & wonderfully tallheavy dutyCONS:the locking clips to release the lower legs are cumbersome

I use the 058 for landscapes. It is quite heavy, but that's just what I am looking for to get excellent stability. It can get quite windy on the west coast of Norway, but so far this tripod does not budge. Great stuff. And with the automatic leg release it is a true joy to work with. I got nothing bad to say about it really. Met all my expectations.

Comments about Manfrotto 058B Aluminum Triaut Tripod:

I originally purchased this tripod under its previous designation of 3251 w/ a Bogen 501 head around the year 2000.

I've been filming weddings and events since that time, and this combo has traveled all over the South with me. It's extremely well built and durable. As a result it is also very heavy.

Carrying this tripod in its bag, along with a Pelican 1620 wheeled case loaded up is quite the challenge for a one-man video crew.

My favorite feature is the quick release legs and easy leveling using those quick release latches. I can be set up and leveled in about 15 seconds. It's that fast.

The other nice feature is the extra long extension legs. You'll have to use your hands, but by releasing the final set of legs manually, gets you about 2 more feet of clearance over peoples heads which does come in handy at weddings and events where you are behind people. Between that and cranking the head column up, you can get your camera to about 8.5 feet in the air.

I'm now looking at buying a long camera slider and plan to pick up this newer model due to its sturdiness. I figure it will help ensure the slider is very stable.

Overall, I highly recommend this tripod!

Comments about Manfrotto 058B Aluminum Triaut Tripod:

Very nice tripod. I bought this tripod for its height and flexibility. I shoot a lot of weddings and other crowded events and needed to be able to shoot high from the back with one camera, above people's heads. Now this is more of a stationary tripod, not made for running around necessarily, so if you are going to be setting up/tearing down often, I would recommend being above average strength, it's heavy, especially with my bowl adapter and 504HD head on it. I love the quick release legs (great for leveling since you can't use a ball head) and I love the smooth crank to race the camera. I bought the Hakuba PSTC 400 bag for it and it was just barely long enough with my tall head.

I would have give this tripod a 5 star rating if it wasn't for the fact that the bottom legs need two hands to set up.
Apart from that this tripod is great, it has good height, the extra weight means it won't fall over and the quick action triggers work awesome.

Great tripod. This one replaced the one I finally wore out after buying it used 15 years ago. The central leg release in why this is the standard tripod for fashion shooters. Nothing faster to dropping or raising the legs.

This thing is awesome, but, for the price, I feel like it should be more user-friendly. I don't really dig the flimsy, burgandy-colored, plastic controls.

I highly recommend that you combine this with the Manfrotto 322RC2 Grip Action Ball Head. Then you're really cookin' with gas!

It's kinda funny that my tripod/head are worth almost as much as my camera body. I just had to have this combo. It's a huge time saver when photographing different products all day long.

Another Sandy Puc recommendation!!! So sturdy, very heavy, but seeing that I am going from a very lightweight inexpensive tripod, I am so in awe!!! It's huge and heavy and the controls definitely are taking some getting used to, but it is exactly what I wanted and needed!!! I am hoping with more use, like Sandy said, it wil gain some fluidity. Otherwise with the 222 joystick head it is quite the show stopper!

I use this tripod to shoot architecture and interiors. It's very solid allowing for exact alignment of images when blending exposure. The automatic legs are very helpful for changing heights and leveling tripod. The only con is the center support rods that have to be screwed down and unscrewed when folding legs.

I am a professional photographer and use this for my studio sessions. I just got it recently and I love the idea of how low to the ground it can go with a touch of a button. It is very stiff once you take it out of the box, though, and it doesn't move up and down very easily right now. I struggle with it a bit, but I've heard that once you "wear it in", it will glide around with ease.
