I purchased this to put on a Bogen/Manfrotto 679 monopod. The monopod comes with a screw mount but it's fixed in place. This head allows you to pivot the camera up and down (or sideways). Many people prefer this type over a ballhead because with a monopod, you can easily turn the pod itself, so this makes positioning the camera a little less complicated.

This head is simple and easy to use. It's medium-weight for its size and fits nicely on my 679. Even with the head in place, the monopod is still nicely balanced. A heavier head would make the pod topheavy.

The head is heavy enough to secure my Canon 40D and a 70-300mm IS lens (my largest) without moving.

The version I bought has a QR plate. On a monopod, a QR system is especially nice since I typically pop the camera on and off it numerous times, while I tend to mount a camera once on a tripod and leave it for awhile. The plate fits securely on my Canon and isn't annoying if I leave it in place while hand-holding. The plate slips in and is held very securely.

This head has a double-lock. There's the main flip-catch, but there's also a rotating pin lock as a safety. If you put the pin in place, the flip-lock won't release--so you can't accidently release the camera if you bump the release. You can, however, leave the pin unengaged if you don't want the safety. I like having the choice.

All in all I'm very happy with it.

I have a Bogen 2541 6x carbon fibre monopod, and I bought this head through several recommendations. It's solid and works well for what it does, but I'm severely disappointed with the range of motion. Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm surprised that there's so many 5 star reviews with this fact. If you set it so you can switch from vertical to horizontal, the only way to tilt your field of view up or down is to physically tilt the monopod, which limits being able to look low or high.I wouldn't necessarily say it's heavy, but compared to my monopod it is. It's 50% of the total weight. I won't consider that a con.

Comments about Manfrotto 234RC Tilt Head for Monopods, with Quick Release:

I bought this to use instead of the ball head I had on my Manfroto monopod. The ball head actually offers too much movement for a monopod so I likes the idea of something that only tilts up and down. It's also a lot lighter than my ball head. The unit works great and easily supports the weight of my A77ii and Tamron 150-600.

Comments about Manfrotto 234RC Tilt Head for Monopods, with Quick Release:

I use a monopod a lot for sports and other low light situations. The Manfrotto 234RC Tilt Head is great as it is light weight, reasonably priced and just does the job well without a lot of bulk. This tilt head does all one needs for a monopod.

        A Monopod Must

        By GeoRanger

        from Idaho

Comments about Manfrotto 234RC Tilt Head for Monopods, with Quick Release:

The best way to quickly fasten your camera with long lens to a monopod. Be sure and attach your quick release plate to the lens mount not the camera mount. Your kit will balance better and you will have the best control over the tilt function of the head; use the lens mount to change between landscape and portrait formats.

Comments about Manfrotto 234RC Tilt Head for Monopods, with Quick Release:

Great head, the only comment I have is related to the arrows on the bottom of the quick release plate, when I lined them up as shown, the tilt adjustment knob is on the wrong side for me (I hold the camera with my right hand but the the tilt knob is also on the right side, very awkward) I called Manfrotto and they told me that for my application it's OK to mount the plate on the camera with the arrows pointing away from the lens, this puts the tilt knob on the left side.

I use it on my Manfrotto MM294C4 carbon fiber monopod for a light-weight support system. Cast aluminum, made in Italy. It is 63.5mm (2.5") high and the base is 38mm (1.5") in diameter. The brass safety catch can be locked in either the engaged or the disengaged position. The tilt locking mechanism clamps smoothly and securely. Comes with a 1/4-20 to 3/8-16 thread adapter. Not as versatile as a ball head but lighter and more compact. Highly recommended.

There is no reason to put a ball head on a monopod. This works very well for that application. The quick release plate is easy to get in and out, but there is a locking mechanism that is sturdy once you flip it closed. Tilt action is a breeze to loosen and lock. This does exactly what you think it would.

Comments about Manfrotto 234RC Tilt Head for Monopods, with Quick Release:

So, I dropped my camera while trying to attach it to this head. Be extra careful and make sure you aren't rushed when you attach your gear to this head. My recommendation would be to screw the plate on your camera first, lock the tilt head in place, and take your time mounting the camera to this head. Seems like a no-brainer process but I just don't want what happened to me to happen to anyone else. Make sure the head is screwed onto the actual monopod securely as well, it seems like it's too easily unscrewed. Construction-wise it's pretty solid and has a nice lock mechanism failsafe on it.

Even though it's built well, I don't completely trust it with the full weight of my DSLR and 70-200 lens. I would still keep my camera strap on while using this just in case.

I mounted this on my lightweight monopod because I have the same one on my heavy duty monopod and I really like it. It is secure, sturdy, easy to operate, and gives more flexibility and steadiness--even on a monopod.

I use it on my trusty Manfrotto 679B monopod for quick set up in crowded areas where tripod is just too much to set up. Solid piece of equipment, should last years.
