Product Highlights
  • For Mounting Canon 580EX II upon Canon 60D/50D/40D/30D/20D/10D/7D/5D (mk I & II), Olympus FL-50R upon E-3, E-410, E-420, E-500, & E-510, and Sony HVL-56AM upon A100, A200, A350, & A700

The ExpoImaging Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter is a unique flash adapter that will convert your hot shoe flash unit into a ringlight flash. It simply slips over the front of the flash unit, and will fit any lens with a front diameter of no more than 4". It will replicate the lighting effect produced by traditional, expensive, and heavy powered studio ring flash units.

The light distribution is accomplished through a sophisticated system of internal prisms, reflectors and light-shapers designed to distribute and project the light evenly around the lens. Because the Ring Flash Adapter relies on the hot-shoe flash to generate its light, it contains no electronics, no flash tubes and requires no cumbersome cables. And in addition, TTL operation works exactly the same as with the flash itself.

The Ring Flash Adapter is ideally suited for fashion, wedding, portrait, journalist and macro photography as either a main or fill-in light.

This adapter will connect Canon 580EX II upon Canon 60D/50D/40D/30D/20D/10D/7D/5D (mk I & II) DSLRs, Olympus FL-50R upon E-3, E-410, E-420, E-500, & E-510 DSLRs and Sony HVL-56AM upon A100, A200, A350, & A700 DSLRs.

Minimal light loss from the flash's standard output
Doesn't affect flash's color temperature
Requires no modifications to flash unit
Model #RAC170-2 works with Canon 580EX II upon Canon 60D/50D/40D/30D/20D/10D/7D/5D (mk I & II), Olympus FL-50R upon E-3, E-410, E-420, E-500, & E-510, and Sony HVL-56AM upon A100, A200, A350, & A700

I use if for portraits and events.Ray Flash can't fully replace studio ringflash because of following limitations:- less output (approx 1 stop loss compared to 'naked' 580EXII);- absence of light direction management (best studio ringflashes allow to adjust the flash optical axis vs. lens optical axis and light beam narrowness), and Ray Flash, while being tightly tied to the flash, however, does not prevent the hot shoe flash head itself from some side play (this can be barely noted with naked flash, but when you put more load on it, with Ray Flash, or with Fong's WhaleTail, you will find that there is some side and end play there);Ray Flash compared to hot shoe flash:- you can't bounce;- usually can't use hood;- access to on-the-lens switches can be limited (depends on lens);- if lens has tripod collar installed (70-200 f/2.8 IS), you have to remove Ray Flash first to take lens off body. However, Ray Flash is awesome addition to hot shoe flash:- no need to carry separate heavy power pack (and Ray Flash itself is not heavy);- shadows are very soft compared to hot shoe flash;- TTL functions as well as with genuine flash;- it costs [$] only. - while it can't replace true macro ring flash, because it does not allow to set a ratio between left and right parts of 'ring'. With Ray Flash you always get a flat even illumination. However, it delivers that flat even light at less than 5" distance. It is definitely better then direct hot shoe flash; light reflections on oily/sweaty skin are not as harsh and shadows are much more pleasing.I would mention following suggestions for events:- remove tripod collar from your lenses if you are gong to switch lenses during event. Otherwise, you would have to remove Ray Flash every time you put lens with collar on or off the camera;- Ray Flash can restrict finger access to on-the-lens switches (AF, IS, etc) to some degree, and to use these switches you would better have some short but strong tool (a lock key might work).Ray Flash might look fragile, but it is not; it is made from high quality plastic. My main concern is storage; it would be great if retail box included some kind of storage bag, because it is hard to find appropriate bag yourself because of Ray Flash shape and dimensions.

This flash adapter is well thought out, but for two things. It's single point of attachment is to clamp on to an existing flash unit that was never designed to hold that much weight or fight that much leverage. I am thinking of fastening something to the bottom of the ring that could anchor on the tripod screw socket of the camera to make the entire outfit more rigid.
The second problem is that the flash unit emits red light for focusing and the upper arm of this ring completely blocks the red light from hitting the subject.
My intention for this unit is two fold 1. using it with a macro lens 2. using it for flash fill in outdoor portraiture. When shadowless light is wanted it works well.
It is not very durable feeling and it seems to be costly.

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter for EOS/Olympus/Sony DSLRs:

It does give a softer shadow around the object, even with as many as 3-4 people, but cannot be too far from shooting it. Overall, I was expecting a lot better material since it's plastic. Or, for [$] I think it may be selling better. It's a bit bulky, but manageable.

I have not had time to play with this ring. In general I'm happy with result. I look forward to use it with wide angle lens to make funny pictures. Also I want to try micro with it.

One problem then using in low light the ring is blocking IR assist beam from 580EXII so autofocus does not work.

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter for EOS/Olympus/Sony DSLRs:

Excellent attachment if you want to achieve soft and even spread lighting for portraits. Adjusting your flash will also allow for Light Ring effect in the eyes.

It is, however, quite heavy and at times hard to fit over certain lenses. Not an excellent choice if there is a lot of movement.

Very nice lighting, kind of awkward looking (but how else can you get light around the lens), does what it says it'll do. The only problem, IMO, is this type of light can only do so much before it's repetitive.

It's ok. It's design makes it kind of rickety. I think for those who want the look, they'll find value in it if they don't have a big budget for something professional grade.

I don't love it or hate it, but I think there will be those who either love it or hate it.. I wouldn't recommend this to a friend, but wouldn't talk him or her out of buying it either..

I was really excited about this idea, but it's extremely bulky, and much bigger than I think it needs to be. The quality of light and flash was good, but I also felt like my clients were seeing stars for much longer than 'normal' flashes or even an actual ring flash.

It fits my 580EX II perfectly.Provides a very powerful, even flash.Looks pretty cool, too.I don't like that it blocks the auto-focus assist light, however, which makes focusing in low light tricky, but that's unavoidable due to the design.

It's not as powerful as a ring light, but this baby comes in handy. It is cumbersome to carry around especially if you plan on shooting weddings with this. It sticks right around your lens so that's great, but I fear if i drop it then it's game over for the ray flash. Overall the photo quality paired up with the canon 580 ex II is great. It just takes some time getting used to.

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter for EOS/Olympus/Sony DSLRs:

I bought this unit for on location fill light. In that respect it works very well. I used it in a studio setting hoping to make my workflow easier but it fell a bit short in that respect. However if your budget doesn't allow for the bigger studio size units this will fill in quite well. It just takes a bit more work when balancing your lighting.

This flash is built to last a lifetime. If you're an engineer you'll like the design and quality of this product. I'm a little surprised that the price isn't higher.

This flash does concentrate light to the middle of the face, but it isn't strong enough to have the effect of a real (far more expensive) ring flash. There is too much fall-off of light in back of the subject and most shots looked pretty ordinary. I returned it.

I've only had this a week. I am using it with a 580 flash. With this flash, I need to use one of the included shims - which is a little rinky dink, but the flash is suppose to fit the ver II model perfect. Works well, but it is large and bulky. Should best be used in conjunction with other general lighting. Shots to date show good potential.

Comments about ExpoImaging Ray Flash Ring Flash Adapter for EOS/Olympus/Sony DSLRs:
