    Best tripod I ever had

    By Cat3

Comments about Manfrotto 536 Carbon Fiber Video Tripod:

Our style of shooting is mostly run and gun. We even take them (we have two) down to the Sea of Cortez to film our documentary. We operate from a sailboat. When we go ashore our time is usually limited so the fastest we can setup a shot the more we can cram into a session. The sticks are relatively light, mount a ball head which gives you a fast way to level the camera and is very sturdy.

Comments about Manfrotto 536 Carbon Fiber Video Tripod:

I've only used this tripod on a few assignments but I can say it is solid. I typically mount an Edelkrone slider and/or Kessler Pocket Traveler jib and it is solid. I love it. Great tripod. Lightweight. Goes High. Goes Low. Wish I had more for all my other cameras.

Comments about Manfrotto 536 Carbon Fiber Video Tripod:

This tripod is lightweight and rigid. It sets up quickly, goes real high and down pretty low. It has good weight capacity. Panning with a 504HD is smooth and without play. I've used it with a small jib and it was very stable and had strength to spare. It's been mounted on an Orbit Dolly and used with Flex Trac. I've also picked up an adapter and have even mounted a Wimberley head and a long lens for doing wildlife stills. If you are in the market for a tripod this size, and you have to carry your gear around, the carbon fiber is well worth it.

I love this tripod! It is extremely stable, quick to set up, and nice and light for it's size. I primarily use this tripod with my Edelkrone slider attached to a 100mm half ball and so far it has been the perfect choice of legs for this use. I read a few reviews saying that it was difficult to switch the angle of the legs to shoot extra low, but I have had the exact opposite experience. Great tripod. Great price. Simple as that

Comments about Manfrotto 536 Carbon Fiber Video Tripod:

First, if you are strictly a run & gun* shooter, especially a solo R&G shooter, you will more than likely need something smaller and lighter than these legs. But if you are a team R&G shooter, and if you are moving into more production style shoots, then these legs are great.

These legs are on the low end of professional heavy duty but are quick setup tripod legs. A little overkill if you are shooting with just a DSLR or small camcorder, but if you are thinking about adding in a jib/ crane or 3-5 foot slider, the 55 lbs weight limit is great. Weighing in at 7 lbs itself, lugging this around on a solo R&G shoot can get tedious once you add in the extra weight from head and any other equipment you've got to carry. The almost 80 inches of height you can get on this means you'll need a chair or step ladder to get up high enough to see your camera's LCD screen effectively, but does allow you to get up and above standing people to record what you need to.

And if you do production shoots, then this tripod can easily work in many different scenarios and still meets the need to look "professional grade" --- after all, you don't want to show up at a client shoot, charging thousands, and only bring a tripod that you bought for $30, right? Perception of quality and all that; these tripod legs meet that concern.

These are rugged, quick setup legs.

I would say, if you are buying an associated Manfrotto soft shell bag to carry these legs in, make sure you take into account the size of the tripod head you'll be using so you don't buy a bag that's too small. (Lesson learned.)

*Run & Gun - Lowel uses this definition and I think it fits well: "Run & Gun is a fast moving shooting style, often characterized by going quickly from location to location, and using fast setups that are simple yet effective." Think wedding shoots, war correspondent reporting, small documentary team, etc.

Comments about Manfrotto 536 Carbon Fiber Video Tripod:

Love that it can so super low and serve as a high hat style mini tripod. And has decent height, also very light and quick easy setup. The leg locks are solid and at first I was worried they may slip, but after getting the tripod, it's pretty well thought out design. I'm an indie filmmaker shoot on red scarlet and this a great setup at good price.

Comments about Manfrotto 536 Carbon Fiber Video Tripod:

This unit has the range of height and inherent strngth that comes with carbon fibre. Tripod choice is about the application and efficiency. In this case it allows us to use the unit in the enviornment in which we work.

e will use other legs in a studio situation but for field work as well as event recording, these are well built and do the job.

Compared to other sticks in the same price range these offer the most flexibility I have see.

Used it a couple of times for work already and I am extremely happy with the speed to get the height I want. They are solid like a rock and have no torque.

Couldn't ask for anything more except that they were about 1 lb less but that is a minor complaint.

                    Solid buy

Comments about Manfrotto 536 Carbon Fiber Video Tripod:

I'm no Manfrotto fan boy, but this carbon fiber tripod is great.

Everyone remarks about the extreme height. How high is high? I am a little better than 6' tall, and with this tripod fully extended and a Manfrotto 100mm half ball adapter with long handle, I can easily walk through the legs. In fact, I can stand fully erect beneath the tripod, and the half ball handle does not touch the top of my head.

I purchased this tripod for video. My main use is intended to support a Kessler Philip Bloom Pocket Dolly. To this end, I mounted a Kessler Kwik Release atop the Manfrotto 100mm half ball adapter. Kessler's Kwik Release is superb, far better than Manfrotto alternatives.

I like these tripod legs much better than the tripod that came with my Vinten Vision Blue. It would be tempting to use these legs under the Vision Blue head. A 75mm bowl adapter is provided, but it appears to require a hex key and 3 set screws to install. Manfrotto provides everything, including the tool, but I will probably keep mine setup at the 100mm bowl size. On production days, I simply do not have time to mess with rigging tripods. This tripod will work perfectly either with 75mm or 100mm, but if you are like me, I won't be trying to use it both ways, at least not on the same shooting day.

This is not my first carbon fiber tripod. I like to take care of my equipment, but with carbon fiber, (as in fiberglass), protecting the legs is especially important, especially during transportation.

To this end, I researched padded leg covers and got an exact size from the manufacturer. I do not believe Manfrotto offers a factory option on this tripod, so I purchased the LensCoat LegCoat Wraps 514 (Black, 3 Pack). They fit perfectly and are an excellent accessory.

I also purchased a case, the Manfrotto MBAG80PN Padded Tripod Bag. This bag is the perfect size for my configuration of tripod, half ball, and Kessler Kwik Release, but this page is not large enough to accommodate any fluid head. For that, you will need to order a larger sized tripod case.

With carbon fiber tripods, I would be very careful with load. Particularly if you have any thought of running a jib arm crane atop these legs. I have been told by Jerry Johnson, president of Microdolly, that carbon fiber tripods are prone to slipping and that telescoped legs can collapse if you put too much weight on them. I believe this, and see that Manfrotto includes a clip-on tool affixed to the one of the legs holding a hex key for adjustment of the leg height locks.

I do not consider this a negative, that carbon fiber is a little more slick and that leg joints cannot or should not be overtightened. Point being, if you don't abuse and misuse this tripod, I believe it will perform great, but if you disregard the intended load capacity, you could set yourself up for a sudden failure that could potentially do a lot of damage to equipment and perhaps cause injury.

Very pleased with this purchase. Looking forward to years of service.

Comments about Manfrotto 536 Carbon Fiber Video Tripod:

The most important consideration is that a tripod be very solid and steady for the gear one uses -it absolutely is. This tripod works well with my 504hd head, but with the Manfrotto ball adapter one can use photographic heads too. I mounted a Manfrotto 057 head to use with a super tele to do a nature/wildlife shoot and the tripod worked beautifully. The weight was was good. I hiked about 3 miles using a Lowepro long lens bag and carried the tripod slung using an OpTech tripod strap - it was a comfortable hike and the weight was never a problem for me. This tripod works well for me pulling double duty for video projects and still photography with big lenses. As others have said the max & min heights are awesome. The unit is built so solid that I haven't noticed any issues with torsion rigidity while panning (although the 536 is billed as ENG sticks). Changing leg angle is only slightly difficult in that the buttons aren't easy to manipulate, but that to me is a very very minor issue. The leg adjustment clips feel very solid and strong. I would feel confident mounting a small jib and rig to this tripod. The 536/535 are definitely recommended.

This is a versatile piece of equipment. The only reason I didn't gave 5 stars is the awkward button to change the angle of each leg. It's not too bad but not too good either. The tripod goes from very low (hi-hat low) to ridiculious hi. Great product!

Comments about Manfrotto 536 Carbon Fiber Video Tripod:

This is my second set of sticks in 7 years, and this is first tripod I bought made for a bowl head. I love the flexibility to adjust the head instead of the sticks to level your shot, and with the legs spread out near flat, you can get some great low angle shots.

This is not a downside, but you need to realize that these are big sticks. When I grab one of the legs to carry it (completely collapsed) my thumb and fingers barely touch - it's that thick. But lighter than it looks due to carbon construction.

Beautifully crafted, solid platform for filming with HDSLRs. Incredible range from low to high angles -- at full extension, I started to conceive of new perspectives to shoot from. ALways a good thing when a piece of gear inspires creative thinking. And it's surprisingly light for such a large tripod. Great for video, probably overkill for still photography with a DSLR.

Comments about Manfrotto 536 Carbon Fiber Video Tripod:

I love this tripod. It's shorter than the 535 when folded and towers above my head when extended. And it's lightweight enough to bring into the field.

I got the 100mm half-ball leveler so I could mount a Wimberley head. It works really nicely. You can also use the 75mm half ball leveler.

Comments about Manfrotto 536 Carbon Fiber Video Tripod:

As most other reviewers noted, the height range on these sticks are astounding. These sticks easily support my dslr and 4 ft jib at their height, allowing an incredible variety of shots: I'm happy I don't have to pack baby legs. The only disadvantages I can see are that panning sometimes tips the tripod over (and I can't find a good way to hook on a sandbag to keep it steady) and that there are so many latches it can take a bit of time to level them all and lock them up at the height you want as the legs stick a bit (an issue I am told resolve itself). That said, very happy with the purchase!
