Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF USA

You Pay: $499.00

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens is a standard lens that provides a large maximum aperture of f/1.4. It is the ideal prime lens for use with all Nikon digital or film SLR cameras. When used on Nikon digital SLR cameras with the APS-C size sensor, the equivalent focal length of this lens will be 75mm, which makes it an excellent choice as a bright short telephoto lens. Its large f/1.4 aperture allows for sharply defined contrasty images against a nicely blurred background. The lens offers superior peripheral brightness even at the maximum aperture, and corrects for possible flare.

The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance, while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration, which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

This lens also incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), which ensures a quiet and high-speed AF as well as full-time manual focus override.

EX lens series denotes excellence of engineering and new technology
Super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting
Equipped with the silent, responsive and high speed Hyper Sonic Motor and provides full time manual focus override

I bought both this lens and the comparable Nikkor to compare. When testing the lenses at B&H, the attendant assured me that the Sigma was much slower to focus than the nikkor. I was skeptical, and suspected the Sigma lens on display an B&H was broken (I couldnt focus on ANYTHING). I told the counter rep, and he assured me it was just the way sigmas are.Couldnt be more false. The Sigma is superior than the Nikkor 50 1.4G. Its way faster, way brighter, and produces crisp pictures with lots of contrast (was actually surprised in how "contrasty" the lens is).One note, this lens tens to overexpose relative to light meter (and i've tried all different types of metering). Could be a product of just simply how wide and how much glass this thing has.Would say its a bit heavy, and a bit unbalanced on smaller camera bodies. Cool at first (yo look at this hunk of glass), but can wear out your neck. All in all would highly recommend this lens. Good quality, good construction, great pictures.

Every photographer would like to have some fast glass in the bag. Normal 50mm lens is the cheapest way to start. With Nikon 50 G version was not in stock at the time, I bought Sigma lens. It balances well on my Nikon D700 and my Nikon D40X. Construction is strong and focus is fast. However it is not accurate! I made a mistake of not checking the lens thoroughly as soon as I got it from B&H and I missed my 15 days return window. As it happend, the lens was front focusing a lot. [...] Few month and three repair rounds later lens is still not focusing right on both of my Nikon bodys! I'm ready to send it for the fourth time to Sigma NY. I would not recomend this lens to a friend! I would not recomend this lens even to an enemy! All I do with it is testing it and sending it to repair so far.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

This lens is very solidly built and whereas it is heavy for a prime, it isn't too heavy. It's definitely a very sharp lens, especially stopped down a little, but my only complaint is wide open. It looks pretty good, but I've seen other example of 50mm @ 1.4 that seem to look sharper. That could be based on me behind the camera, or it could be my copy. However, with that being said, I still think it is good enough to warrant keeping it, and it's very likely it could be me and not the lens at 1.4.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

After hearing lots of horror stories in reviews about focusing issues with this lens, I decided to risk it anyway and buy it. I needed a fast prime that I could use in low light, portrait and street photography. This lens is a BEAST. Luckily it seems I got a good copy because I haven't had any issues with it focusing on my Nikon D5200.

It adds a little weight to my light camera but nothing to break one's wrist. The image quality is sweet and the bokeh in the wide apertures is nice and creamy. You might need to get used to stepping back in tight spaces because on the D5200 it gives you an equivalent of about 75mm.

I got this lens 5 days ago and I have put 200 shots through it, it works as I expected, I tested it in several lighting situations and it works very well and fast, I did check it for front and back focus, no issues on this,it is just right on the spot, sweet, acurate focus. I am very satisfied with this Sigma 50mm. f/1.4 lens I'll be looking for the Sigma 70-200 2.8 for my next purchase, Sigma you did it again, B&H keep up the graet work, excellent service, Thanks.

At f1.4 the sigma 50mm it's quite usably sharp. At 1.8 and beyond, it's very sharp. The bokeh is really amazingly smooth. More so behind the DOF than in front though. Colors, Contrast, etc, all excellent. Great build quality, solid feel, free case and lens hood. Just a little on the heavy side. :)

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

Adding primes to your kit is a must for the serious photographer. Prime lenses change your perspective when shooting. Yes, zooms have certain advantages but nothing works like a prime. I wanted a new fast 50mm and doing my research I discovered the Sigma 50mm f:1.4. Rated as high as the Nikon equivalent for a lot less money. This lens is smooth, sharp and built well. I must say also that over the past year (2013), I've added 18 lenses to my kit; four are not Nikon. I would also say that I must be the luckiest photographer in the world because I've never received a lens that back focused, front focused or had any issues intrinsic of the lens itself; unlike so may of the PRO photographer reviews knocking everything that isn't first party. AF is fast and true and manual focus is a breeze. Save some money over the branded issue of this lens...who knows it may be the same glass with different markings.

I'm sorry to say that the copy I received front-focused significantly at the wider apertures and closer distances. I returned it and got the 85mm f/1.4 instead, which was spot on. It is truly a toss of the dice with this one.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

This is not a general purpose lens. As any other 50mm 1.4 lens, the Sigma has a very narrow DOF. On a close-up portrait shot at f1.4, focused at the eyes, the blur will start at the ears. Some may consider this to be a weakness of the lens, it is in fact a great feature. The right combination of distance to the subject and the selected aperture gives you absolute control of what you want sharp and what to blur. The lens is very well built, a little heavy but not surprising with the strong body and all that glass.

This is one sexy piece of glass! I use this on my Nikon D600 and it is amazing the Bokeh is simply beautiful worth every penny. I know its more but if you are considering buying the Nikon 1.8 50mm save you money and wait to buy this you will not be disappointed nor will there ever be a need to upgrade later. Its on the heavier side of 50's but that is due to the size of the glass in this lens.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

I purchased this lens THREE times, including the copy I reviewed earlier this year. Suffice to say, I really wanted to like this lens!I arranged with B&H for a third copy of this lens, but experienced the same issues as previous, and as frequently cited. Front-focus issues, inconsistent AF, etc. This time, however, I arranged with Sigma to send the lens to their NY repair facility, along with my D3 (shudder) for calibration. So to give credit where due here. Paul from Sigma USA was courteous, communicative, and got me through the process. AND they performed the calibration and adjustments in just 24 hours. On testing the lens when I got it back, it's now all I hoped it would be - a better 50mm than Nikon's current offerings, to my mind. Focus is fast and accurate, AF consistency is way up (85-90% handheld @ f/1.4 in so-so light), color and contrast are really nice, bokeh remains excellent. All at a +/- 0 fine tuning after Sigma dialed it in. I still find it a little soft wide-open, but at 77mm, there's going to be a trade-off. Still five-stars in my book.I've now decided the inconsistencies with this lens were likely due to a third-party manufacturer like Sigma having to preset the lens' programming to fit so many different brands and bodies, rather than any defect (though nobody's perfect!). For the cost of shipping to Sigma, I got as good of a mid-range AF prime lens as you're going to find. I'm really impressed.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

This is fast becoming ny favorite non-zoom lens.
Fit and finish are first rate. I get great detail from side to side and beautiful bokeh at the open apertures. As it has been said before, focusing at f/1.4 takes a little practice, but the rewards are there.

Comments about Sigma Normal 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF:

This lens has gotten very high reviews by many photographers - this is one of the reasons why I purchased mine. I am loving this lens...it is extremely sharp at 1.4 wide open...I am about to sell my Nikon 50 1.4g since I was never able to shoot at 1.4 and get sharp images all the time...images with the nikon were always soft.

This is my first Sigma lens - I rate it a four star since I had to actually try out a couple of lens at B&H on my D4 until I found the one that had No back or front focus. I will suggest that when you purchase this lens to shoot it at f/1.4 and if you see that there is back or front focus return it and get another one or do AF Fine tune with your camera and lens.

My copy needed no AF Tune adjustment - it focus 100% accurate at all f/stops.

The contrast and color reproduction is just perfect. The out of focus - Bokeh - is exactly what I was hoping to get.

I will highly recommend to anyone to purchase this lens instead of the Nikon 50 1.4g.

Purchased this lens on recommendation of B&H sales associate when shopping for appropriate event photography lens on my first professional assignment, and I was thrilled with the results. Great in low light, the lens excelled in candid backstage shots that would have been hopelessly underexposed using a more general purpose lens. The lens is sturdy and autofocused well in challenging light conditions. I got superb results and recommend the lens without reservation.

I purchased this lens after having "hunting" issues with my Nikon 50mm. Well this lens is awful. Even after having it micro calibrated. It hunts, and its just a soft lens. Even at 2.0. Its looked like there was a plexiglass film in front of my pictures, and it missed focus more then it nailed it. Not only that but its heavy, heavier then my 85mm. It also wasnt all that great in low light compared to my nikon 50mm. Which is odd. This lens is on its way back to B&H.

I use this as my principal lens for portraits on my full frame camera. I also like to use it in low light situations like corporate events so I don't need to be intrusive with a flash. I am very happy with the image quality that this lens produces. My results are predicatble everytime I use it.
