I bought both this lens and the comparable Nikkor to compare. When testing the lenses at B&H, the attendant assured me that the Sigma was much slower to focus than the nikkor. I was skeptical, and suspected the Sigma lens on display an B&H was broken (I couldnt focus on ANYTHING). I told the counter rep, and he assured me it was just the way sigmas are.Couldnt be more false. The Sigma is superior than the Nikkor 50 1.4G. Its way faster, way brighter, and produces crisp pictures with lots of contrast (was actually surprised in how "contrasty" the lens is).One note, this lens tens to overexpose relative to light meter (and i've tried all different types of metering). Could be a product of just simply how wide and how much glass this thing has.Would say its a bit heavy, and a bit unbalanced on smaller camera bodies. Cool at first (yo look at this hunk of glass), but can wear out your neck. All in all would highly recommend this lens. Good quality, good construction, great pictures.

Great bokeh and color, with decent af speed. Build is OK.... I would say that the new Sigmas definitely look and feel better built (my other lens is the 150mm macro which is great also). AF also seems pretty accurate, except for the issue below.
OK - the issue, on my D800 and D7000 the Sigma can not focus in Live View mode.... my Nikon 50mm 1.4D and Nikon 85mm F1.8G both work without issues on both bodies.
So - definitely a largish issue. I'm not extremely upset given the +ve qualities of this lens, but had I known about the live view issue it would definitely have given me pause....

I have not had any of the back focusd issues I have read about. Lens is fast and accurate, every time. Lens has a nice solid feel to it and it does have some weight. Front lens is a massive 77mm. Even at F1.4 I get nice clear shots. Stepped up to F5.6 and the result are breath taking. Well worth [$]$[$]I paid for it and I have no regrets. I use this Sigma lens on a Nikon D300.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

I photograph as side work for a magazine as well as tutorials for some "how-to" websites. Occasionally I will also do weddings and portraits. My other lens is a 28-300mm, and I was looking to add this Sigma 50mm to my collection for portraiture. All I can say is, "wow"! I was deciding between this lens and the Art, and I decided to go with this simply for the cost, and I am impressed with the image quality and soft effects this lens brings. It is slightly bulkier than what I have used in the past, but I just make more room in my bag for it. I shoot with a Nikon, and I was also looking into another brand of 50mm. This Sigma had much better reviews, and I am glad I chose this product.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

This lens produces amazing images when used correctly. The construction seems fine and the case and lens hood are included.
On my Nikon D7100, Nikon lenses are "plug and play". However, the Sigma requires you to think how you are shooting. It is somewhat soft wide open with a super short depth of field. You need to take this into account when focusing - I recommend using spot focus.
When stopped down to F4 it is still somewhat shallow, so again, care in the focus point. At F5.6 to 11 the sharpness is exceptional and focusing is much less critical. I have found the color and contrast to be very good after F2. There are some chromatic aberrations up to f5.6 in high contrast situations, so care needs to be taken. (I looked at my Nikon 50 1.8g and the CA's were there too in similar situations.)
The Bokeh is gorgeous smooth - better than the Nikon primes by a good bit.
The lens is heavy, so take that into account with your body.
So, overall, a great lens but needs to be used with some thought. I would not call this a vacation walk around lens. But for portraits on a DX body and other critical shots, it is really excellent.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

I was on the fence about getting an 85mm for my DX, but since the sigma 50mm comes close to that on a crop sensor, I decided to spend less and see if I would be happy with the focal length and quality in order to get the 1.4 I wanted on a budget.

I was pleasantly surprised at the sharpness, even wide open. This lens looks gorgeous, and it surpassed my expectations for sharpness at 1.4, however...

As noted in other reviews, this lens is plagued by focusing difficulties. I knew that in advance, and immediately began testing it and AF fine tuning it. I spent nearly a full day trying to get it tuned. I would think it was spot on, then 15 minutes later I would begin spotting back focus. In the end, I realized I was dealing more with focus shift (the focus was not consistently hitting on the same spot) than with simple back or front focus. It did have significant front focus, requiring a -17 on my D7100 to correct, but the bigger issue was that the focus fine tuning only applied to one range or another--close up or far away. If I tuned for 3-5 feet away, it would be spot on and sharp (when it hit focus), but 12 feet away would be front focused. In the end, I fought with this lens for a solid two days. I wanted to like it. The price is reasonable, and the sharpness is incredible, but I returned it.

I may try purchasing this lens again, because it really had unparalleled sharpness and DOF for its range, and I preferred the look of it over the Nikon rivals. I decided to go with the 85mm 1.8 instead, and I am ok with that decision. On a daily basis, I miss the 1.4, though, and there is really no substitute if that is what you want.

If you don't mind giving some TLC to the focus, this is a great lens, and well worth the price compared to the rivals. Although I chose to return it, I am still giving it a fair rating, and would recommend it to others depending on their needs.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

I added this 50mm prime lens to my Nikon D810 and the pictures come out beautifully. The auto-focus is quieter than I expected and the field of view is great. This is the first of my Sigma lenses but definately not the last. I have added two others because of the quality. It is heavier than the Nikon 50 f/1.4 lens, in my opinion.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 is my new "go to" lens. It creates great bokeh when taking portraits. This also makes it good for emphasizing objects so they will stand out and really pop when I want them to. I was just as pleased with the results when I wanted to capture a greater depth of field in my shots. The large diameter of the lens has allowed me to get better shots in low light conditions. I have also been impressed with the results when I use my camera in black and white mode. The autofocus works fast & flawlessly. The lens is very solidly built. Even though it is larger and weighs more than most 50mm lenses; I have not found the extra weight too much to handle. I highly recommend this lens.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

For a 50mm the size and weight is striking. I like both so that is not an issue. The upfront weight tends to balance my D800 so it is comfortable. But if big and heavy are not your thing this is not the lens for you. In operation it tends to hunt for focus in low light and it does miss sometimes going from infinity to close up. However it is optically better than my nikon 50mm 1.4D at wider apertures. The center sharpness is great and gets better stopped down up to the narrow apertures. Wide open the DOF is very very small so focus has to be spot on.The bokeh is really nice. I have heard of focus issues with this lens but this one does not miss much. It can be soft at the edges at narrow apertures but less vignetting and almost no noticeable barrel distortion. Like most lenses in the mid price range you can't get everything. I have the Nikon 1.4D if I need good performance throughout the aperture range and the sigma if I want better performance at wide open to middle apertures.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

This lens is very solidly built and whereas it is heavy for a prime, it isn't too heavy. It's definitely a very sharp lens, especially stopped down a little, but my only complaint is wide open. It looks pretty good, but I've seen other example of 50mm @ 1.4 that seem to look sharper. That could be based on me behind the camera, or it could be my copy. However, with that being said, I still think it is good enough to warrant keeping it, and it's very likely it could be me and not the lens at 1.4.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

After hearing lots of horror stories in reviews about focusing issues with this lens, I decided to risk it anyway and buy it. I needed a fast prime that I could use in low light, portrait and street photography. This lens is a BEAST. Luckily it seems I got a good copy because I haven't had any issues with it focusing on my Nikon D5200.

It adds a little weight to my light camera but nothing to break one's wrist. The image quality is sweet and the bokeh in the wide apertures is nice and creamy. You might need to get used to stepping back in tight spaces because on the D5200 it gives you an equivalent of about 75mm.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

I got this lens 5 days ago and I have put 200 shots through it, it works as I expected, I tested it in several lighting situations and it works very well and fast, I did check it for front and back focus, no issues on this,it is just right on the spot, sweet, acurate focus. I am very satisfied with this Sigma 50mm. f/1.4 lens I'll be looking for the Sigma 70-200 2.8 for my next purchase, Sigma you did it again, B&H keep up the graet work, excellent service, Thanks.

pretty much what I expected. You can tell the build quality is a little lower than a nikon lense, but it takes amazing quality images with my d600.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

At f1.4 the sigma 50mm it's quite usably sharp. At 1.8 and beyond, it's very sharp. The bokeh is really amazingly smooth. More so behind the DOF than in front though. Colors, Contrast, etc, all excellent. Great build quality, solid feel, free case and lens hood. Just a little on the heavy side. :)
