I bought both this lens and the comparable Nikkor to compare. When testing the lenses at B&H, the attendant assured me that the Sigma was much slower to focus than the nikkor. I was skeptical, and suspected the Sigma lens on display an B&H was broken (I couldnt focus on ANYTHING). I told the counter rep, and he assured me it was just the way sigmas are.Couldnt be more false. The Sigma is superior than the Nikkor 50 1.4G. Its way faster, way brighter, and produces crisp pictures with lots of contrast (was actually surprised in how "contrasty" the lens is).One note, this lens tens to overexpose relative to light meter (and i've tried all different types of metering). Could be a product of just simply how wide and how much glass this thing has.Would say its a bit heavy, and a bit unbalanced on smaller camera bodies. Cool at first (yo look at this hunk of glass), but can wear out your neck. All in all would highly recommend this lens. Good quality, good construction, great pictures.

Great bokeh and color, with decent af speed. Build is OK.... I would say that the new Sigmas definitely look and feel better built (my other lens is the 150mm macro which is great also). AF also seems pretty accurate, except for the issue below.
OK - the issue, on my D800 and D7000 the Sigma can not focus in Live View mode.... my Nikon 50mm 1.4D and Nikon 85mm F1.8G both work without issues on both bodies.
So - definitely a largish issue. I'm not extremely upset given the +ve qualities of this lens, but had I known about the live view issue it would definitely have given me pause....

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

I added this 50mm prime lens to my Nikon D810 and the pictures come out beautifully. The auto-focus is quieter than I expected and the field of view is great. This is the first of my Sigma lenses but definately not the last. I have added two others because of the quality. It is heavier than the Nikon 50 f/1.4 lens, in my opinion.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 is my new "go to" lens. It creates great bokeh when taking portraits. This also makes it good for emphasizing objects so they will stand out and really pop when I want them to. I was just as pleased with the results when I wanted to capture a greater depth of field in my shots. The large diameter of the lens has allowed me to get better shots in low light conditions. I have also been impressed with the results when I use my camera in black and white mode. The autofocus works fast & flawlessly. The lens is very solidly built. Even though it is larger and weighs more than most 50mm lenses; I have not found the extra weight too much to handle. I highly recommend this lens.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

For a 50mm the size and weight is striking. I like both so that is not an issue. The upfront weight tends to balance my D800 so it is comfortable. But if big and heavy are not your thing this is not the lens for you. In operation it tends to hunt for focus in low light and it does miss sometimes going from infinity to close up. However it is optically better than my nikon 50mm 1.4D at wider apertures. The center sharpness is great and gets better stopped down up to the narrow apertures. Wide open the DOF is very very small so focus has to be spot on.The bokeh is really nice. I have heard of focus issues with this lens but this one does not miss much. It can be soft at the edges at narrow apertures but less vignetting and almost no noticeable barrel distortion. Like most lenses in the mid price range you can't get everything. I have the Nikon 1.4D if I need good performance throughout the aperture range and the sigma if I want better performance at wide open to middle apertures.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

This lens is very solidly built and whereas it is heavy for a prime, it isn't too heavy. It's definitely a very sharp lens, especially stopped down a little, but my only complaint is wide open. It looks pretty good, but I've seen other example of 50mm @ 1.4 that seem to look sharper. That could be based on me behind the camera, or it could be my copy. However, with that being said, I still think it is good enough to warrant keeping it, and it's very likely it could be me and not the lens at 1.4.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

After hearing lots of horror stories in reviews about focusing issues with this lens, I decided to risk it anyway and buy it. I needed a fast prime that I could use in low light, portrait and street photography. This lens is a BEAST. Luckily it seems I got a good copy because I haven't had any issues with it focusing on my Nikon D5200.

It adds a little weight to my light camera but nothing to break one's wrist. The image quality is sweet and the bokeh in the wide apertures is nice and creamy. You might need to get used to stepping back in tight spaces because on the D5200 it gives you an equivalent of about 75mm.

I got this lens 5 days ago and I have put 200 shots through it, it works as I expected, I tested it in several lighting situations and it works very well and fast, I did check it for front and back focus, no issues on this,it is just right on the spot, sweet, acurate focus. I am very satisfied with this Sigma 50mm. f/1.4 lens I'll be looking for the Sigma 70-200 2.8 for my next purchase, Sigma you did it again, B&H keep up the graet work, excellent service, Thanks.

At f1.4 the sigma 50mm it's quite usably sharp. At 1.8 and beyond, it's very sharp. The bokeh is really amazingly smooth. More so behind the DOF than in front though. Colors, Contrast, etc, all excellent. Great build quality, solid feel, free case and lens hood. Just a little on the heavy side. :)

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

I have mated thia lens to my Nikon D7000 and have not been didappointed. This is a very fast and ultra sharp prime lens. I have used it in a number of situations and in all cases it has performed well from street to landscape I am getting some really nice results. I woulld recommend this lens to anyone looking for aa fast, quiet, sharp prime lens.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

Adding primes to your kit is a must for the serious photographer. Prime lenses change your perspective when shooting. Yes, zooms have certain advantages but nothing works like a prime. I wanted a new fast 50mm and doing my research I discovered the Sigma 50mm f:1.4. Rated as high as the Nikon equivalent for a lot less money. This lens is smooth, sharp and built well. I must say also that over the past year (2013), I've added 18 lenses to my kit; four are not Nikon. I would also say that I must be the luckiest photographer in the world because I've never received a lens that back focused, front focused or had any issues intrinsic of the lens itself; unlike so may of the PRO photographer reviews knocking everything that isn't first party. AF is fast and true and manual focus is a breeze. Save some money over the branded issue of this lens...who knows it may be the same glass with different markings.

I'm sorry to say that the copy I received front-focused significantly at the wider apertures and closer distances. I returned it and got the 85mm f/1.4 instead, which was spot on. It is truly a toss of the dice with this one.

Comments about Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon F:

This is not a general purpose lens. As any other 50mm 1.4 lens, the Sigma has a very narrow DOF. On a close-up portrait shot at f1.4, focused at the eyes, the blur will start at the ears. Some may consider this to be a weakness of the lens, it is in fact a great feature. The right combination of distance to the subject and the selected aperture gives you absolute control of what you want sharp and what to blur. The lens is very well built, a little heavy but not surprising with the strong body and all that glass.

This is one sexy piece of glass! I use this on my Nikon D600 and it is amazing the Bokeh is simply beautiful worth every penny. I know its more but if you are considering buying the Nikon 1.8 50mm save you money and wait to buy this you will not be disappointed nor will there ever be a need to upgrade later. Its on the heavier side of 50's but that is due to the size of the glass in this lens.
