The Varizoom VZ-ZG ZeroGravity tripod head is an innovative design made to work with tripods and camera cranes. VariZoom's unique approach to this tripod head allows the user to exactly balance the camera's center of gravity without a counterbalance mechanism. The operator can adjust pan and tilt to any position without having to tighten the drag control.

Unique Design
The Zero Gravity design allows the user to tilt higher and lower than most conventional heads. A complete 360 degree pan or tilt is possible or it can be underslung on a camera jib for manual operation. All this without seeming camera top heavy.

Comments about VariZoom VZ-ZG ZeroGravity Tripod Head:

I have been working on a documentary on Birds of Prey. I am often trying to follow birds in flight a 1/2 mile away or more and at focal lengths of more than 2000 mm (35 mm equivalent). Lots of fluid heads work for pans moving horizontally on the smae plane, but it is difficult to move smoothly vertically following a bird in a flight or to move diagonally, both vertically and horizontally at the same time at great focal lengths following a small bird in a big sky. The zero gravity does the best job of this among all things I have tried. I use it with my new JVC GYHM700L17 with a special 2/3" long lens on it, and it handles this camera well. But I have also tried my Canon AI and a Sony FX7 on it and it works well with both. It is really amazing to have a variety of camera weights that all can balance perfectly at all angles and at all degrees. Because the JVC camera has a swivel viewfinder, I can follow a bird virtually 360 degrees both vertically and horizontally. You can vary the drag in both directions but I usually use it without any drag, simulating a steady handheld camera.

The Zero Gravity is not the easiest head to move place to place, but it does come with a nice travel case.

Comments about VariZoom VZ-ZG ZeroGravity Tripod Head:

Although I shoot news for a TV station, I bought this for my own personal and freelance use. I've always used very good and expensive tripods, but I've never been completely happy with any of them. I wanted something different, and the Zero Gravity head is certainly different. It takes some getting used to, since the controls are not where they are on other tripod heads. I also found that if I shot without tension on the pan and tilt controls, pushing the record button would cause the camera to shake for a couple of seconds. So I had to train myself to know where the buttons are by feel and to add some tension to the controls before getting still shots. But now that I'm used to the tripod head, wow oh wow! In the past few weeks, I've shot kayakers at a competition, college students playing Frisbee in a park, and jet airplanes taking off from an airport. I was able to follow the action so much better than with a regular tripod head. It just pans very, very smoothly and doesn't fight you when you tilt up or down. I can also get shots that regular tripods can't. For example, I took a shot of a huge, outdoor light pole. I positioned my camera against the pole and shot straight up. While my camera is too big to do a complete vertical 360 like smaller cameras can with this head (I use a larger, traditional-style camera), it's sill nice to finally be able to get shots like this while keeping the camera on the sticks. The Zero Gravity does add a little extra weight to the tripod, and carrying it can be a bit more awkward because of the extra few pounds up high. But I'm being very nitpicky. As far as I'm concerned, the added benefits of this head certainly outweigh the extra couple of pounds. And when I shoot on my own time, I always carry everything myself - the camera, tripod, etc. Another potential negative is that the head does not fit in the same case as the sticks. While the included head case is very well made, I'd prefer to have just one case that fit both. However, this is not much of an issue with me. The head attaches to the legs pretty quickly, and most of the time, I don't even put the sticks in the case. I just throw the tripod on a blanket in the backseat or very rear of my car and go.[...]when it arrived, I was pleased to discover how solid and well built it was. And the more I shoot with it, the more I like it.The bottom line for me is that this is an amazing tripod head at an unbelievable price. If you tend to gravitate towards really expensive gear like I do "because pricier has got to be better," it's probably worth giving this unit another look. I'm glad I did.

Comments about VariZoom VZ-ZG ZeroGravity Tripod Head:

The build and action are much more than I expected. This head is as smooth as silk, smoother really. It has a max load of 15 lbs which is fine for most small cameras. I use it with my HVR-Z1U and my PMW-EX1. For the price there is nothing out there that comes close. Beware that zero gravity heads do not work like a conventional head. They take some getting used to because the work on two separate axis at the same time. Once you have it down there's no going back.
