The Gitzo GH1780 Center Ballhead is a lightweight magnesium ballhead that incorporates many innovative and state-of-the-art features. It is designed to match the range of high performance tripods available from Gitzo. Not only does it guarantee a high maximum support load, but it also offers many other improved features, such as: smoothness, minimized drift angle, low gravity center, greater tilt angles, compactness, ergonomics and safety.

Exceptionally smooth rotation, positive locking and rapid camera mounting are all features common to the Gitzo designed range of ballheads. The graduated base, with independent locking facilities permits perfect panoramic photography. The design of the panoramic base permits the ballhead to be used for table top or near ground level work with or without the use of a tripod.

Series 1
Recommended for use with Series 1 tripods.
Safe Lock Disc
The Safe Lock Disc top plate, composed of a techno-polymer compound, makes it possible to control the locking torque without prematurely stopping camera rotation and ensuring that the camera is safely and effectively locked in place.
Spring Lock
The SADL (Spring Assisted Double Lock) combines two locking systems in one. It maximizes both locking power and ball smoothness. A high friction metal guarantees a high efficiency lock, and the PTFE bushing - controlled by a pre loaded spring - maximizes smoothness and control.
Bubble Ball
The Bubble Ball is produced as a completely round hollow sphere, with an ultra thin wall, for an incredible weight reduction. The Bubble Ball also features a perfected PTFE treatment that further reduces the surface micro roughness.
Extended Tilt Range
This head offers independent pan and tilt locks with 360° pan movement, +95/-13° tilt movement, and a graduated engraved panoramic base.
Supplied with a 1/4"-20 camera mounting screw.

Comments about Gitzo GH1780 Center Magnesium Ballhead - Supports 22 lbs (10kg):

Combined with a lightweight CF tri-pod, this helps keep my pack weight to a minimum. I am sure that my knees will thank me one day. So far it seems very solid, no problems. I love that it is not only small and lightweight but very simple with a large release knob that I can operate with heavy gloves on. I am curious how it will hold up in the Sand Dunes but so far, I have no complaints.

Comments about Gitzo GH1780 Center Magnesium Ballhead - Supports 22 lbs (10kg):

I bought this head to pair with the Gitzo GT1542T Series 1 Traveler 6x Carbon Fiber 4-Section Tripod w/ G-Lock. Together, they make a very light and compact set-up. Regarding the head, it holds my D800 with 14mm 2.8 perfectly stable at any angle. The ball rotation is not the smoothest and without a friction control knob you just have to get used to that. Panning is relatively smooth and a nice little feature is that the pan lock lever can be positioned at any angle by pulling it out and turning it while it's not engaged with the screw. Attaching the camera to the head is simple enough, if not as convenient as having a QR plate. The QR plate version would be a fine option too but if you're trying to cut weight and height for travel purposes, I chose this to be the better option. Basically, with this head you get Gitzo quality for [$]. Not bad.

Comments about Gitzo GH1780 Center Magnesium Ballhead - Supports 22 lbs (10kg):

The ballhead is smooth when the camara is used horizontally. But, when I shift to vertical, the camera creeps down. Most of my work is nature macro, so I simply hold the camera with my hand. Although not ideal, it works. My main reason for purchasing the head was to get something lighter then the three times heavier Gitzo that I have been using for four years.

Comments about Gitzo GH1780 Center Magnesium Ballhead - Supports 22 lbs (10kg):

I needed a lightweight head to take on backcountry expeditions and this was the ticket. Extremely lightweight and smooth. Holds my D90 and 70-300 lens firmly in place. The only gripe I would have is the panning feature. As has been stated the lever looks like it is vulnerable, but I don't think it should be a huge issue. Also the panning is not as smooth as I would like. If you only occasionally use the panning feature and want a ultralight head that has very smooth ball action with a firm hold than this is for you. If you do a lot of panoramic shots than I might look. elsewhere.

Comments about Gitzo GH1780 Center Magnesium Ballhead - Supports 22 lbs (10kg):

Sure there are better heads out there, but for the price and simpleness you can't get much better. Expect normal Gitzo quality and ease of use. The head is very stable and doesn't sink when tightened. Panning is smooth as is the ball, and tightening the knob won't make it feel as though your going to break it. The weight is a nice touch and you don't get any grabbing as with cheaper ball heads.

Comments about Gitzo GH1780 Center Magnesium Ballhead - Supports 22 lbs (10kg):

Needed a smaller lighter alternate to the larger AcraSwiss/Gitzo 3 series tripod setup. Using this head on with Gitzo Traveler series tripod allows for a "carry on" airline option and a weight saver on long hikes. Works well with my Mamiya 7 and Canon gear, upto the 300mm f4. With the Canon's longer lens or the view camera I would use the larger 3 series setup. The heads low center of gravity keeps the mounted camera manageable, the head does not have the falling break action that the ArcaSwiss head has. The locks are strong and postive, without giving the feeling that next time the nob could twist off before it stops the camera from moving. The movments are smooth and free of the "grabbing" found on other light weight heads. Cons, you will need to postions the head to allow for 90 deg change in camera orientation as there only one head postion that allows for this movement, I just move the pan around until the slot lines up.
