This production slate is built very well. Easy to write on easy to clean off. My only complaint is that you probably want to check to make sure that all the screws are tightened when you get it. Mine were loose and flew off after I used it a couple of times. But once I tightened the screws everything was fine!

This device was purchased for the filming of a pilot episode for a new series. The product looks nice, has the appropriate sections, and functions in a very basic way. But after 2 days of principal photography (150-200 claps), the small metal magnets imbedded broke loose and emerged out of the under-clap side of the arm / base. Additionally it began to crack near the Ikan marque. Some reviews have mentioned it was very tight but seemed to loosen up after 15 or 20 claps.

Second issue. You absolutely have to purchase "Expo 2" or another Ikan suggested markers to use with the board. A total inability to locate "Expo 2" markers and increasing duties on my PA's led me to finally just purchase some special edition "now easier to erase" Expo markers. On the drive home I called Ikan and spoke with 3 different reps about the markers I had purchased, if it really did make a significant difference, and the conflicting instructions the slate came with.

The instructions suggest a number of acceptable markers to use with the board including "Expo 2" and lastly "any other low odor marker with the same chemical composition." The problem is that the original Expo IS a low odor marker and how am I supposed to know if it's of the same composition or not? I told the Ikan rep that I had tried 3 different shops and no one carried Expo 2 or any of the other pens Ikan suggested. I told them that one of the pen manufacturers listed on the instructions had actually changed company names since the directions where printed which made me assume that the directions were out of date. On top of the name change info the third store (specialty pen shop) gave me, the store employee added that Expo 2 was an older model Expo put out that she hasn't seen around in a while.

The rep was nice but it took a really long time to get a straight answer which was, "yes, the original Expo markers will destroy the board- we tested one as early as a month ago and it left streaks even after wiping quickly." The rep admitted that the instructions needed revision to read "any low odor maker EXCEPT Expo."

That was a few weeks ago. Halfway through this review I decided to call them again and ask them about the process of getting the thing replaced for a nicer edition. The representative told me the main difference between the nicer one and mine was that it was engraved instead of printed on. He indicated that the same composite wood (that broke on mine) was used for the nicer one and the only difference was the engraving. He told me that I had to send it back on my dime and the inspector would determine if it was user error or manufacturer defect. The longer I spent on the phone asking questions the more I got the impression that this was simply a low quality product.

The Ikan site looks nice, their other products look pretty decent, the reps were kind and one of them was helpful, but the fact of the matter is that I received THIS particular product so I'm reviewing THIS exact one. I don't really have a lot of time to give another one a try so I'm just going to have to return it to B&H. Some reviews here read along the lines of "yeah it's cheap but it gets the job done" but for the current price I wouldn't bother. If this was an "economy product" it would be exactly half of this price. I believe in cutting corners when you can but on something that's critical to a principle photography shoot, it's not worth it. What I'm probably going to do is just build something, which is not what I wanted to do when I've now got 50gb of footage to review and a second shoot to plan next month. I will probably inset a pane of photo frame glass in a wood frame with some foam rubber for shock absorption.

I took a lot of time with this review because I thought it might help others save a few irritating hours. I want to feel bad about this type of review but I don't. I actually just picked it out of our production crate to take a quick look before I send it back. Thinking to myself, "maybe this thing can just be used as is." The slate came right off the clapper in my hands. Unreal.

Comments about ikan PS01 9x11" White Production Slate:

I got this to replace an older one that broke on me. The item I received is slightly different than the one pictured. The layout of information is different and the "Cam" and "FPS" places are gone. It looks nicer and cleaner, but is something to note.
The clapper is attached with a few dabs of hot glue, so you might have to re-glue it at some point.

The biggest selling point for me is that the board itself is not transparent. This is a problem with several other ones such as the Pearstone ones, making it harder to read the text.

Comments about ikan PS01 9x11" White Production Slate:

I really enjoy this slate. I work with a local Film Festival (CineSol) here in South Texas. The festival twice a year sponsors a film race. We bought a variety of clapboards to use as trophies. We had a local trophy shop reproduce the content we wanted and print it on the slate. This clapboard was a little too nice for us to use on this occasion, but the idea went over very welll with the winners. It's big, and very sturdy. We're keeping this one for future use at the festival. And the price was pretty reasonable.

This is a good simple slate but check it out when you buy it because mine was badly scratched and where the surface is compromised a marker will not erase.

With the sound quality on HDLSRs being what it is (ie: crummy for the most part), things have come full circle with the need for external synch sound and this Ikan slate is perfect to help register that hand-shake. I like that the back doubles as a white card, too. I personally missed the days of having to call "Marker!" before a take and here they are again for us HD punks. I'll still call to check the gate after a scene, but it's mostly to amuse my old-school friends & confuse young DPs...

"magnetic."I received the slate in the mail today after buying from [...] and snapped some photos of the box (fig. 1) as well as the packaging and instructions for white board markers. Super simple stuff, seemed legitimate and quality. I opened up the packaging and was shocked by the looks of it. As you can see in Figure 2, the clappers are lined up unevenly, the paint is POORLY stenciled, and from operation, the sticks are incredibly stiff. I had to loosen the screws a good deal to get the sticks to even open and close at an audible click. After opening and closing a couple times, snap. The wooden sticks had come clear off the dry erase board. What was holding the two together, you ask? 5 dabs of hot glue. I will most likely be building myself a new pair of sticks to slap on the white board part of it, but I am pretty disappointed in the quality of this guy. Getting my hands dirty, I'm sure I can tweak it and fix it, but it's sad I pay [$] for this and get something so poorly crafted. Even found a fingerprint in the paint. Maybe I can track him (or her) down and give them a talking. Figure 1: [@]Figure 2:[@]

It does make a good clap, though.

I am a student at a college in New Jersey and often times create short films with other students for personal as well as school projects. This has made synchronizing audio a hella of a lot easier!!!! I don't know why I waited to so long to get it. I would also recommend purchasing Low Odor markers as they easily wipe off the board. (I also use a microfiber cloth to prolong the life of the slateboard. This makes an awesome clapping sound that is easy to find in the audio timeline. This is perfect for my budget now until one day I am able to afford a digital production slate

The construction of this production slate is solid and works well. I have had slates before that came apart. This one does not. Easy to hold, picks up good on camera, easy to wipe off. Wish these came with an attachment for a marker on the back side of the slate.
                              Good size.
                              I recommend it.

The slate works great and was less expensive than other slates, but the quality relating to the details (like paint, glue spots, etc) was lower. If these little issues are not important to you, than this is the route to go. For me, it was a great purchase.

Comments about ikan PS01 9x11" White Production Slate:

I've used this slate for a short, independent film. It was several days of intensive use (the nature of the film called for a LOT of short scenes, and due to the complexity of them a lot of takes were needed).
The slate managed it with no issues. Given, I always erased the markings every evening, but there are no stains in it. The magnet that holds the clapper together was a really nice detail for back slating.
After the shot, the slate still feels as sturdy as it did when I first got it.
For only about $15 more than the toy ones, this slate is a no-brainer.

Good quality slate, with good visibility on the front.

                                    Only problems are:

1 - the hinge is very tight, which makes the clapping slightly more difficult.
2 - the nut on the hinge screw came off and disappeared. Need to find another one to replace the tape that's on there now.

I use this production slate when I am shooting two camera video productions. It saves me tons of time in post. The price is right and it is all I need.

I just purchased a second slate to give to an intern as a gift.
