The MDR-AS40EX active-style headphones from Sony combine the stable designs of both earbuds and earclip-style headphones into a single product that's great for people who are constantly on-the-go. The headphones include three different sizes of detachable ear hangers, and three different sizes of earbuds, allowing you to find the most stable and comfortable fit possible. You can also choose to remove the hangers completely, and use the headphones as standard earbuds.
In addition to the sleek and comfortable design, the headphones also offer outstanding sound quality. The neodymium drivers provide a wide frequency response with deep bass and crystal clear treble. Other great features of the headphones include moisture guards, to keep sweat at bay, a detachable extension cable, a cable clothing clip, and a hard carrying case.

The headphones are made especially for the gym. They are very well built and for this reason fit very well in the ear (they do not hurt at all like other headphones and one can hardly hear what is happening in the outside world). The cord is extendable and the case (little round case) is very practical. I just loved it. A real bargain for the quality you get. I forgot the principal: the sound is amazing!

I purchased these headphones about 9 months ago to listen to my iPod while I run. The design of the over-ear clips is nice, and the ear cushions are very comfortable. Sound performance was also solid. However after about 9 months one earpiece stopped working. Although these headphones are not excessively expensive, I'd expect them to work for at least a few years. I have a similar pair (without ear clips) that I listen to when I'm not working out and have never had a problem. I do not recommend using these headphones for exercising.

Comments about Sony MDR-AS40EX Active-Style Earclip Headphones:
Everyone's ears are different, I know. I use my headphones outdoors while doing various active things like yardwork, construction, and so on. None of the earphones I'd used before would stay in. These, however, are light, comfortable, and they absolutely do not fall off. The multiple-sized tips enabled me to get a very good fit in the ear canal so they screen out a lot of surrounding noise while delivering good sound quality.

Comments about Sony MDR-AS40EX Active-Style Earclip Headphones:
I spent about $800 looking for a decent sound quality headphone that would stay on me while running regardless of speed. I finally purchased this pair and I wont look at anything else. They have been washed and dried with my clothes, several times, and I have not had any problems in the three years that I have had these. I have a background in studio audio recording, and I have yet to find a better audio quality then these. I run with them often, never fall off. They are comfortable, stylish, nearly impossible to break.
Comments about Sony MDR-AS40EX Active-Style Earclip Headphones:
I absolutely love these headphones! The sound is great. They stay in place while I'm running. They are great for connecting to an iPod (with the short cord) or using on a treadmill (with the longer cord). I was SO BUMMED when I went for a run one day though only to realize that the sound in one of the headphones had totally stopped working. No matter how much I played around with them, I still couldn't get the functionality to return. This was about 9 months after I had originally bought them.
Comments about Sony MDR-AS40EX Active-Style Earclip Headphones:
I noticed a lot of negative feedback for these, so I HAD to post a review so people reading don't miss out on a great product. I've had them for over a year, and i've put them through running, work outs, mowed lawns, skating (and a lot of falling), and last night, my wife washed AND dried these, and they're STILL going hard. Great headphones, strong, and sound great! For in ear design, these are by far the most durable headphones out there, and they sound great too.

Use the product: Working Out.
Pros: They stay on the ear, even while running. I haven't had any tangle issues so far either.
Cons: Cord is short, but they include an extension... and it can be too long.

These are lightweight and comfortable and great for running, biking and other physical sports. The ear clips obviously help keep things in place. The price is right and the quality, though not the best I've ever heard, is fine for exercising. On the downside, they have a tendency to pop out if sweat gets in your ear.

Comments about Sony MDR-AS40EX Active-Style Earclip Headphones:
I bought these headphones for my 15 year old son. He says the sound quality is better than any other headphones he's used. And the (removable) clip is perfect for when he goes running. He's very happy with these!
Comments about Sony MDR-AS40EX Active-Style Earclip Headphones:
They stopped working after 2 months. Normal use, no jogging or working out with them. Just walking. I've never had a problem with a Sony product in the past 20 years, but this purchase will definitely make me think twice before I buy their products again.
Comments about Sony MDR-AS40EX Active-Style Earclip Headphones:
I use the M and S ones and you cant fined any of them at the store's. I lost my hangers and ear bud's. so I found them again only on line good for keeping the papers. I just wish they sold the bud's and hangers.
Comments about Sony MDR-AS40EX Active-Style Earclip Headphones:
These are the best earbuds I've found yet! I have very small eardrums, and most earbuds are either painful to keep in my ear, or constantly fall out. The option for different size earpieces, for both in the ear and the over-the-ear piece, make them feel very comfortable, and stay in place without pain! I had given up on earbuds until I found these. I've had them for 1 1/2 yrs, and have to get another pair only because I lost them...they still sounded just as good as when I first bought them. I hope they never discontinue these!!!! I'd hate to be without them.

Comments about Sony MDR-AS40EX Active-Style Earclip Headphones:
I have had these headphones for a little over a year now, and haven't had the first problem with them. My ears are oddly shaped, so I normally can't use in-ear buds unless they have over-ear hangers. I also wanted some that I could use while working out. These are perfect for working out because they're waterproof and pretty much stay put. They tend to slide out of my ear when I'm talking, but all ear buds do, so I can't complain about that. But the interchangeable sizes make them stay put much better than others I've tried.
The sound is great for such inexpensive headphones. I've seen some reviews here that say the sound isn't great, but I'm a minor in audio engineering and often use these to evaluate my music while I'm on the go. Of course they're not up to the same quality as the more pricey Sony headphones, but they are exceptional for ear buds. And I've recommended them to some classmates who don't have the funds to go out and buy really nice headphones. I give them two thumbs up.

I got the sony mdr-as40ex headphones and was excited to try them out. [...]While Sony's packaging was impressive, and even came with its own plastic case, the true test would be in the sound. I was replacing a pair of sensa headphones that came with my mp3 player. The Sony headphones have a nice ear strap that holds well. Comfort is decent and they stay in place during exercise and moving about. The problem with these headphones is a complete lack of depth and no real bass. They were not as good as the sensa's i was replacing. For the money, the sound quality was dissappointing. I am putting them in the junk drawer with the rest of stuff I have wasted money on, hoping they would be something they're not. TWO THUMBS DOWN!

Myself, my husband and brother owned these headphones. All three pairs broke within three to four months of purchase. As other reviews have stated, the sound goes out in one earbud. I am disgusted that Sony has not corrected this problem or taken these headphones off the market seeing such poor reviews online. I wish I would have read the online reviews prior to purchase, however, we assumed Sony would not sell such poor quality items. Please do not waste your money on these headphones!

I have owned 3 pairs of these ear buds and every single one worked for a few months and then the left channel disappeared. These are way too pricey for something that only lasts a few months. I see that others have had the exact same experience. Clearly Sony is only interested in getting your money and does nothing to fix this systemic problem. Bottom-line, they produce junk, don't waste your money.

I don't usually do reviews, but I had replaced a set of Sony headphones I have been using (same type) the last 6 years with the MDR-AS40EX. I was concerned with headphones staying on during exercising and the comfort of the headphone over hours of wear. Neither have been a problem and I think I prefer the earclips to the headphones I have used in the past. For me, the sound has been fine, not the best, but more than adequate. I have been using them often for the last several weeks and I am happy with them. I have a flight to Asia coming up and this will be my only headphone I take on the trip.
