Formatt Graduated Neutral Density HD Filters enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. Exposure can be increased by 1, 2, 3 or 4 stops to suit individual situations.

Often it is necessary or desirable to balance the light intensity in one part of a scene with another. This is especially true in situations where you don't have total light control, as in bright contrasty landscapes. Exposing for the foreground will produce a washed-out, over-exposed sky while exposing for the sky will leave the foreground dark and under-exposed. This filter enables cloud detail to be kept correctly exposed in the picture.

Soft/hard indicates the degree of transition.

A standard set of ND's is 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2. This represents 1 to 4 stops of light reduction 1

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

Neutral Density Factors

ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop, reduces ISO 1/2)
ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO 1/4)
ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO 1/8)
ND1.2 (exposure adjustment = 4 stops, reduces ISO 1/16)

Formatt Grads are Available in Four Types

Soft Edge - Half clear, half colored with a smooth transition to full density. Generally used with medium to wide angle lenses
Hard Edge - Half clear, half colored with a definite less subtle transition. For use with long focal length lenses
Razor Edge - As hard edge but with a solid transition line for shooting corners of buildings, knife-edge horizons or when a very bold transition is required
Blender - The grad line is right at one edge of the filter so the color change runs from top to bottom. Perfect for irregular objects and skylines

Ok, most importantly, the filter does what it should do very nicely. I like that it has 3 f-stops at the high end. Could even use more. I have been pleased with both still and video modes shooting with this -- in terms of the image -- which is arguably the most important part. Ok, now the downsides.
      1. My Canon lens cap kept falling off...so I left it off for the day because I did not want to lose it (the lip of the filter is not large enough to accommodate the grip for the lens cap).
      2. The filter is also very thick.
      3. There are no threads on the outside portion of the filter...again, not the end of the world, but the versatility is reduced.
      4. Ok...this is going to make me sound petty, and I know there are filter cases out there...but whereas most high end filters ship in in a good plastic container this ships in a utility cardboard box--it will arrive safe, but you will not want to use it in your gear bag.
      5. There is no really distinct marking to indicate where the "top" of the graduated filter is. Really important with a product like this.

All in all, happy to have it as part of my gear, but Formatt could spend a few more hours working on the functionality of this product.

Ideally, this would aid in landscape shots, but the 3 stops of ND are barely visible. I wouldn't get anything below a 1.2 ND in future.

Comments about Formatt Hitech 77mm Graduated Neutral Density (ND) 0.9 Filter:

This filter arrived dirty. Packed in foam rubber, particles had spread everywhere, and wiping them off was the wrong move. Very hard to clean.
.9 appears to be too dark to render a natural but still defined sky. .6 would be better.
This filter needs a mark (can be done easily by the buyer) to identify its position.
The filter is quite thick and caused significant vignetting on my 24mm lens. Also, it causes a mild blue cast—not exactly what I want when I take images in the light coming from an already blue sky.

A ND Grad filter makes such a difference when photographing landscapes. A must for balancing the exposure between sky and earth. The only real drawback is that if you want your horizon line to be above or below the center of the frame, the gradation of the filter cannot be adjusted.
