The Gitzo GT2542L Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs is an eye-level tripod that uses advanced "Carbon 6X" carbon fiber material for its leg construction. This improved tubing is stronger, lighter and as resistant as its 12 layer predecessor. Carbon "6X" is manufactured using a complex, 3-D process weaving 6 layers of carbon fiber into smooth, solid constructed tubes.
The GT2542 is ideal for use with DSLRs with 200mm lenses (up to a 300mm maximum), lightweight camcorders, and spotting scopes. It offers an excellent load capacity rating of 26.4 lbs (12kg) and good torsional rigidity.

Comments about Gitzo GT2542L Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs - Supports 26.4 lbs (12kg):
Finally a lightweight travel tripod that's TALL enough for me without the center column extended at all! I'm not that tall (5'9"), but had trouble finding a lightweight tripod I didn't have to bend down to use. If it's windy out, I can hang my camera backpack from the center column hook to stabilize it. Great for taking out in the woods for landscape photography, or around the city. Excellent quality, as you would expect from Gitzo.

Durometer of stock feet rubber is a bit hard and size is small. Just get the spike foot kit - you know, the [$] item that should have been included - five stars if so...Yes, pricy Gitzo, but best if your around 6 foot!

Comments about Gitzo GT2542L Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs - Supports 26.4 lbs (12kg):
I already had a Manfrotto 055 carbon 'pod but heard so much about Gitzo I decided to take the plunge. I wasn't sure when I ordered it if I would keep it but wanted to compare it side by side to my Manfrotto. Once I had it in my hands I knew it wasn't going back. It's very well made, slightly lighter in weight and is a couple of inches shorter when collapsed. But more importantly, when the four sections are expanded it is actually too tall for my 6'2" height and I have to lower the legs slightly (a positive thing). And this is without raising the center column! That means no periscope to cause "wobble." The screw down locks are very tight with no give at all and while I wasn't sure that I would like them better than the Manfrotto snap-locks I find that I do like the Gitzo version better. Today I received the Gitzo padded case which holds the Gitzo tripod and a Markin ballhead perfectly. The Manfrotto came with the shifting middle section that converted to horizontal. I miss that part but Gitzo has an accessory for that purpose if I decide I need it.

I carry this tripod in the field and use with my 4X5 field camera. It gives me additional height and yet slight less folding size over my previous carbon fiber tripod of a different brand. Well worth the upgrade.

I had been looking at Gitzo tripods for quite a while, but I couldn't decide which one would best suit my needs. After chatting with a B&H rep, it was decided that the GT2542L would give me the best bang for the buck. This it has definitely done and I have absolutely no regrets in purchasing it. It has handled my Nikon D800 and Nikon 200-400mm f/4 VR II like a dream. I can't say enough how great this tripod really is!

Gitzo carbon fiber tripods are expensive, but it doesn't get much better. This tripod is solid, stiff and combined with a equal quality tripod head like RRS or Arca Swiss etc. provides what is the most important often overlooked ingredient to landscape or similar photography. This tripod is very light, center column can be removed for no nonsense low angle shooting, I personally don't care for fancy horizontal columns etc. My only concern was the twist lock style legs, I prefer lever locks but after short period found these excellent and very quick to set up.

Comments about Gitzo GT2542L Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs - Supports 26.4 lbs (12kg):
This is my first serious tripod. One that took me well over several weeks of researching. After much hesitation, I settled for this over the Series 1 Traveler GT1542T and never looked back. I use these legs with the Markins Q-Ball Q20, RRS B2 LR II 60mm LR clamp with dual mount as well as the RSS B5D2 L plate and together they're the perfect combo for what I do. I wanted a carbon fiber that I can stowaway inside a backpack or a carry-on in the overhead cabin. While its sibling, the GT1542T can do the first part perfectly, this tripod fits comfortably (without ballhead setup) when placed diagonally in my 22-inch carry-on. I pack this between my clothing for added protection. It is about 7 inches longer than the GT1542T but I wanted the comfortable eye-level height as well as a more solid footprint for shots in inclement weather. The Mountaineer GT2542L, in my opinion, is the best option for versatility, weight and stability in between the Traveler and the Systematic Series. I love this tripod so much that I decided to also invest in the Series 3 Systematic GT3542XLS for the best stability and added height for studio/traveling work. The Markins/RRS setup I already have work perfectly with both of these legs. While Gitzos are expensive, I only need to buy once for the best setup and peace of mind.

I bought this to replace a chinease copy, and couldn't be happier. The build, weight and size are ideal for me, and it is MUCH more solid than the "just the same" copy. Nevery again will I go cheap!

Very stable, love the 1/4 turn to lock / unlock the legs. I'm 6'3" and this fits works great on level ground without even raising the center column.
If you remove the center column, it will even fit in a 24" suitcase to take on an airline.

I primarily shot birds and this tripod is just what I needed to successfully support my Nikon body and Sigma 500 lenses. Mounting devices are well engineered and lock right in place. Carbon fiber makes it a light weight tripod and esay to carry around.

Comments about Gitzo GT2542L Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs - Supports 26.4 lbs (12kg):
I shoot a lot of landscapes and seascapes, so needed a versatile, well built tripod, but being 6'4" was sick of stooping over short tripods. The ability to quickly disassemble and clean the legs of sand and salt water is fantastic. I probably could have spent the extra to get the Ocean series but am very happy with this. Just be careful with rocks and the bottom leg section. When setting up for low level shots I am conscious of the exposed nature of the legs and have a couple of scratches. Carries an Olympus E-3 and 50-200mm perfectly.

Comments about Gitzo GT2542L Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs - Supports 26.4 lbs (12kg):
I chose this tripod because I was tired of always bending down to look through the viewfinder and/or raising the center post and losing stability. This tripod is tall and is perfect for average to tall people.
The weight difference over a shorter model is insignificant.
It allows me to shoot from the side of hills and sand dunes with two legs fully retracted and one leg fully extended with the camera at a good working position.
Sand does not seem to get in the locks.
Gitzos are worth the cost.

I am really enjoying the extra height and reduced weight of this tripod. The legs are easily set to whatever height the subject requires.
Some care is needed when attaching the Manfrotto 410 gearhead as the tripod setscrew is too short for the wavy plate on the heads bottom.
I will be looking for some foam pads for the upper legs and a sling to make carrying this on hiking trips more comfortable.

Incredibly well built, reliable, strong, light, tough and with silky smooth operation. I often use a tripod above eye level which is why I went for this model. Absolutely no complaints at all.

After upgrading from the Manfrotto, I am really pleased with this tripod. It costs a small fortune, but I'll never have to buy another one. When I take the center post out, I can get about 6 inches off the ground. Without the post, it is still eye level and I'm 5-10. Awesome!

I had been using my brothers Manfroto 190 for 2 weeks. When I tried this tripod at the Store I was hooked.
The legs are very easy to extend, and closing all segments with a single hand with 1/2 twist is magic.
The same night I took it for a large landscape of mahatma from the NJ side. The tripod was easy to setup even in freezing weather, very solid on the ground even with my big lens and camera.
Used inverted for macro shots as well.
Love this tripd. It is very light but my ball head is rather massif so there is no big difference to the manfroto it is just a bit taller and easier to work with
