If you use a Nikon camera and Photoshop, you are faced with the dilemma of whether to invest in Capture NX 2 or Lightroom. I recently upgraded to Capture NX 2 and Adobe CS 5, but had previously used Capture NX and earlier versions of Photoshop. I debated whether to switch to Lightroom as part of the upgrade, but decided to stay with Capture NX 2.
There were two things that carried a lot of weight in the decision. First, I read a review on a website comparing Capture NX 2 and Lightroom. The author noted that Nik Software and Nikon partnered on the development of Capture NX 2. As a result, Capture NX 2 did a better job than Lightroom converting RAW files generated from a Nikon camera into JPEGs. The review had some images that demonstrated the point. The images were different enough that it convinced me. Secondly, Nik Software makes some great stuff. I also own Nik's Complete Collection and its U-point functionality saves a tremendous amount of time in creating masks within Photoshop. That same U-point technology is in Capture NX 2 and it makes touch-ups on lighting, saturation or other attributes very easy.
Now that I have been working with Capture NX 2 and Adobe CS 5 for a while, I realize that the big drawback of Capture NX 2 is the lack of integration with the Adobe suite. I cannot cleanly open a RAW file using Capture NX 2 from within Photoshop and/or Adobe Bridge. As a result, I will sometimes resort to opening both Capture NX 2 and CS 5 which uses through a lot of memory and slows down the work flow. I modified my work flow so that I create the JPEGs prior to launching Photoshop and then make adjustments within Photoshop. As a result, I alternate between View NX and Adobe Bridge to navigate my images and directories. It is a reasonable work around.
My recommendation is if you shoot using a Nikon camera in RAW format and care about image quality, then definitely get Capture NX 2 and don't worry about the limited integration with Photoshop. Other camera users will like the U-point functionality within Capture NX 2, but if you use Photoshop extensively as part of your workflow, you might want to consider Lightroom.

I did have an install issue. Tech support line was NOT open 24/7 as advertised at Nikonusa.com, tech support people had no other option than reinstall the software, and basically were rude.

Over the years I've owned and still use Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro with excellent results. Nikon really improved the software making it more intuitive. I use this software Nikon's Camera Control and believe me it's a time saver when using both products together.

Comments about Nikon Capture NX 2 Photo Editing Software:
Before explaining the great things about Capture NX 2, I'll include a caution. The version sold in this CD is not the most up-to-date version. This is version 2.2; for digital download, Nikon is up to 2.3.0 with a 2.3.5 update. I started with the 60-day free trial download, which worked beautifully with the RAW files I shoot with a Nikon D5100. As my free trial was about to time out, I bought the CD--because it is significantly cheaper than the download--not realizing that it is an earlier version. Turns out that version 2.2 does not work with RAW files from a D5100: a fact I later confirmed with techs from B&H and Nikon. There is no download available from Nikon, on either its US or Asia site, that can make version 2.2 work with a D5100. Demonstrating their great commitment to customer service, B&H allowed me to return the CD for full store credit.
Now to what I like about Capture NX2. I am a fairly skilled amateur photographer, but with limited experience with sophisticated photo editing software. With the aid of Ben Long's outstanding book on Capture NX2, however, I was able to develop a firm grasp on the program's capabilities within the 60-day trial period. I found the software to be easy to use, and to enable me to make subtle and targeted enhancements to my photos. The selection control points, color and tone adjustments, shadow and highlight adjustments and retouch brush all work amazingly well. I especially love the High Pass filter, which, when coupled with an opacity mix, dramatically sharpens images without lots of sharpening artifacts. And the editing interface, which allows you to turn individual adjustments on and off with a single click, is extremely helpful, as is the before-and-after compare function.
Adjustments occur with adequate speed on my computer. I run a Mac with only a moderately fast processor--3.06 GHz Intel Core i3--and with most adjustments there is only a slight but (for me) perfectly tolerable lag.
In sum, I highly recommend this software, particularly for photographers shooting Nikon RAW files. My one caution is that, before you buy, check with Nikon to make sure that version 2.2 will recognize RAW files from your camera model.

Finally, and not advertised by the third party crowd of course, a software which is streamlining the workflow from capture to print. Based on Nikon proprietary algorithms (not being shared with third party developers)your in camera settings are being aknoledged in NX2 and the moving of sliders to achieve your camera output in 3rd party products is therefore obsolete.
With the color control point technology I have a very powerful tool for editing, an intelligent way of replacing masks.

Comments about Nikon Capture NX 2 Photo Editing Software:
Nikon Capture II is an incredibgly powerful editing software.
Its simple, easy to use design outperforms Photoshop in ease of use, simplicity and time savings. What takes 45 minutes in photoshop takes merely 7-10 in Capture. The innovative sliding "B-C-S" focus point tool makes editing a breeze and allows for more uniformed control over objects to be editied. My girlfriend and I use it for a multitude of photo-editing tasks from personal to professional.
The quick fix tool is another outstanding feature for red eye reduction and ridding of troublesome shadows that is a nightmare to work with in photoshop.
I have not found any deficiencies with the product as of yet, I suppose the welcome screen could be more visually appealing if I were to get really picky; perhaps a background color option as in the new Microsoft office suite, other than that no qualms.
I would highly suggest this product without blinking an eye. Add to cart and do not give it a second thought.

I am using a Nikon D7000 camera & I have recently added Nikon View NX2 and Nikon Capture NX2 to my post processing workflow. These two products work together very well in assisting me to obtain the results I want to achieve in making my photographs. This software is also designed to help you get the most out of your Nikon camera.
I have been using NIK Compete Edition for Photoshop and Lightroom for many years & am a proponent of the NIK U-Point technology which allows for placing control points onto a photograph and then using the sliders of the control point to adjust color, and many other aspects of the photograph. Capture NX2 was developed by NIK and uses their U-Point technology.
I am very satisfied with Capture NX2 and highly recommend this product.

I got Capture NX2 in all the photos that I edit. I bought it about the same time that Lightroom 4 was released. I initially had second thoughts on getting Capture NX2 as I have used Lightroom 3 i the past and was thinking maybe LR 4 was the natural next step. It gives me just everything that I NEED. I don't all the other fancy gimmicks on the features. I just need something straight forward -- and that is Capture NX2.
I haven't experienced a crash or anything. They say that it's slow but I think it's just alright. One thing I noticed though, the CD I got was of an older version so I had to go and download an updated version before I got to open NEF files from my D3100. After that, everything was just cruising.
