Note! Tripod and head are sold separately.

Camera Movement
From the ground level, the camera can be tilted up over 90 degrees, allowing the user to obtain a great perspective shot. I was looking for an inexpensive solution, short of a DIY crane. This exceeded my expectations by a long shot! Since I don't do a whole lot of jib work, the Backpacker made more sense as it collapses into a shorter (41") section for easier storage. Plus, someday, I might actually want to take it on a hike.

I found that for a Canon 5D MKII body and 24TS-E II lens, that it took 12.5lbs of counter weight. For me, that is 2-5lb weights, and 1-2.5lb. weight. I bought the Kettle Weights at W-mart. Depending on your lens, you would do well to also purchase a 2.5lb. wrist weight that allows you to slide it on the crane to fine-tune.

The only "issues" that I had were the attachment to my Manfrotto fluid head. If you have a tripod that uses the Manfrotto Octagon quick release head, you would do well to purchase an extra quick release plate with the 3/8" Euro threads and make sure you mount it on the crane with pliers to get it good and tight. The other issue is that I had some slight side-to-side wobble on some of the takes, but I think a lot of that has to do with practice. Some people are commenting on it being loose. There is a turnbuclke that you may need to adjust and bolts that occasionally may need to be tightened. This unit comes with an instructional DVD that shows you tips and techniques that aren't found on the web site.

I'm giving it a full 5 stars for solid value in an entry level crane kit. Very nice.

PS - You'll want to buy the carry case too. I thought I'd save some money and bought a generic tripod case but had to return it because it was too small :( You might find something that would work for at least 45" length and 8" width.

This crane is solid for the price. It can give you the basic low-to-high shot that a crane should without having to break the bank. I have 2 basic criticisms of the product, and one small warning for amateurs. First let's start with the criticisms:

    1. The directions are useless. I was able to figure the mounting out but could have made some ugly mistakes. If this is your first experience with cranes I would suggest assembling it with a friend who knows, or a going to a pro camera store that can make sure you have the right tripod and glide head etc.

    2. There is a little bit of jerkiness at first when panning side to side. Granted, part of this depends on your tripod head and how much resistance you set it at (and how much you practice), but there was some jerk to the movement at the beginning and end of pans. It isn't major and you should be able to get it after a couple takes.

Finally, the warning. To all amateurs who are looking to get this because you want to cut costs, be advised: you WILL need to spend good money on a video tripod AND tripod glide head that can handle weight. If you don't already have those, factor that into this purchase because trying crane shots without the proper equipment is a recipe for disaster. Other than that, it's fun! Cheers

      Comments about CobraCrane 5033 Backpacker:

I used this product to film commercials and advertisement clips for outdoor television-style products...ie: outfitters, ranches, hunts, etc. I've found that a straight vertical movement with this jib produces an incredible view as the scenery develops beyond what is in focus close to your camera. Keep that in mind and look for areas to move it vertically with close objects in focus and incredible scenery behind. Another strong piece of advice is to include a counterweight in your plans. If you try to run even a 5 lb. camera on this without a counterweight, your movements will contain several hesitations...less smooth, less professional. It is longer than I anticipated and not easy to take in luggage on flights. I've only found one bag big enough to support its size for flights. This is my only difficulty, but I fly a lot as I go to different locations to film.

        Comments about CobraCrane 5033 Backpacker:

I had been putting off getting this for so long and now I wonder why. Pretty simple set up, but the directions really didnt have decent visual support so the 1st time it took a while to get things going.

That said, I mounted my HPX170 and counter weighted 11.5 lbs and its worked real well. Obvious things I should mention is there is a reason you see added monitors with these tool. In my case without one I had to set focus before the shot and although this is smooth. It takes some practice to do it right. In summary a nice lightweight piece that if not overused can add some production value to your work.

Just as described in the tutorial video, this crane comes ready to use right out of the box. I am extremely impressed with the smooth pulley, and how quiet this crane operates. It's relatively light weight, but the best feature about this crane is the mounting! There are multiple holes for 3/8 or 1/4 inch screws for a camera plate which allows complete customization for which tripod set up you can use.

            Comments about CobraCrane 5033 Backpacker:

The Backpacker edition of the CobraCrane is great for beginners just cutting their teeth in the world of professional/semi-professional filmmaking.

The crane is SUPER easy to set up, and learning how to use it is just as fun as watching your footage go from shaky and precarious to smooth and thrilling.

One thing that is very misleading about the name of the Backpacker is that the product DOES NOT COME WITH A BACKPACK. I mean, that's my fault for not reading the fine print but maybe the name should be something more along the lines of COBRA ON THE GO or something else that does not include the name of a piece of equipment which would make one assume that said product is part of a set which includes the pieces named in its title... oh well.

Aside from that the action is smooth but just lacking the precision you would get from a sturdier crane, although the main purpose is being able to bring a hard to carry piece of equipment with you wherever you go, so when I'm carrying my crane on the subway to a shoot, I can forgive a little play sturdiness for the fact that I can have the piece of equipment with me at all.

I appreciate CobraCrane's attention to detail and their ease of use. I will gladly be stepping up to the CobraCrane II when my bank balance allows me to do so as I am very pleased with all of the support from the company and their help in making their products versatile and easy-to-use.

I wasn't about to spend thousands of dollars on a jib, but I still wanted jib movement and control for my 5D MKIII. After watching tons of videos online and reading reviews, I figured the best bang for my buck was the Backpacker Jib. Purchased some barbell weights for a few bucks at a local sporting goods store and I was in business. I had questions about the product, it's use and compatibility, and their customer service guys were eager to assist me going above and beyond the whole way.If you're buying a $[$] jib expecting to get a $6000 jib, you're fooling yourself. But I can't build a better one for less money and I know how to leverage all of the aspects of this jib in order to get the shot I want. Get it, get familiar with it, and make your shot happen... or spend a ton of money elsewhere. The market is saturated with unreliable and untested jibs, this one is reliable, and you can get your shot if you step back and look at everything this jib CAN do.

This crane was easy to assimble and use right out of the box. I figured this whole thing out and had it built in about 35 mins. I use this crane while streaming live muisc from small venues. Fits well in tight spaces and gives you that big budget look. Only downside to this is that there is a little bit of slop in the boom arm when moving left to right, however, with a little practice, like 5 mins, you can get around it right away. It's the trade off for small compact design and light weight I am sure.

I set the CobraCrane Backpacker up on a Sachtler fluid head tripod and this thing is a great, relatively inexpensive solution for the types of shots I was looking to do. Very smooth monvement both up and down and side to side. Just make sure to get some weights for the operating handle side to counter balance for your camera -- this really smooths out the movement. The Backpacker is a great bang for the buck product and really helps add that professional touch to your film projects. It's very portable too!

This crane works well and is a great value. I was interested in using it to film classical concerts to provide a higher eyepoint and some motion to increase the interest in the shots. It is great, but because the rig including weights is 20 pounds or so I had to upgrade my fluid head as well. The product literature is clear enough, so this isn't really a complaint, just a warning. There is some tendency for the crane to oscillate, and careful control is important.

This crane is great for intermediate/beginner filmers. Got it for my first jib arm/crane and i love it. Adds lots of quality to the production, easy to use and transport, and doesn't need too much counterweight. It is a bit shaky sometimes, but cant get it all for [$]. Overall a great product!
