A tripod head is required and not included with these legs. Be sure you purchase a tripod head to attach to your camera.
The Gitzo GT1541 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs uses advanced "Carbon 6X" carbon fiber material for its leg construction. This improved tubing is stronger, lighter and as resistant as its 12 layer predecessor. Carbon "6X" is manufactured using a complex, 3-D process weaving 6 layers of carbon fiber into smooth, solid constructed tubes.
The GT1541 is ideal for use with DSLR cameras with 135mm lenses (up to a 200mm maximum), MiniDV camcorders, and spotting scopes. This Series 1 model is the ideal solution for photographers on the move or when space and weight are key factors.

Comments about Gitzo GT1541 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs - Supports 17.6 lbs (8kg):
Just by sight I could tell this is a quality product. It is very well made and there are no fiddly bits that can snap or break. It's clean, lean, light and very sturdy. I am very surprised by just how rigid and sturdy it is for such a light-weight tripod. I use it for field work and studio work. I can only recommend this wonderful piece of kit.

Perfect compromise of stability vs portability. Rock solid with a RRS BH-30 with my D7000/18-200 setup.
Column down height is perfect for me (5'-10").

Comments about Gitzo GT1541 Mountaineer 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs - Supports 17.6 lbs (8kg):
I've had for some years a Gitzo 1325 legset with Markins Q20 ballhead. That setup is very rigid, and fairly bulky. Though not overly heavy, I've not wanted to carry it around much either. But, when shooting my 300 f/4 AFS Nikkor, it is the tripod that I want.
When I want to shoot something lighter, such as a Leica M, or Rolleiflex TLR, the 1325 is overkill. I also had a Linhof Universal Ballhead 1, (rated 7.7lbs) left over from the past. First I tried the Gitzo 1542 Traveller. It is nice and light, but a bit short for my 5'11" height. I always had to raise the column to get it to eye level. So, I took advantage of B&H's great return policy.
Next was the GT 1541. It is light, and with the ballhead it will fit into the small Gitzo case (sold separately). The leg tube diameters seem a little larger than that of the 1542T. It is fairly stiff for its light weight. It is most stable without extending the lowest section of the leg. The new Gitzo anti-rotation legs make setup very fast. I even tried my 300mm + 1.4 teleconverter for a 420mm lens on this tripod just to check for stability. It will hold, as long as there is no wind, and you don't touch it!
The tripod's platform diameter is exactly the same as the diamter of the Linhof ballhead's base. It makes the appearance seamless. It will also crouch very low on the ground for macro use.
For my smaller and lighter cameras, this is just ideal. I don't mind its small folded size and light weight, so it can come with me to many more places. It will also fit in a full size luggage for travel use.

I am a nature photographer and do the majority of my photography on the trail. I am also a woman. This carbon Gitzo is just the ticket; sturdy, stable and very lightweight. A snap to set up and take down.

fast and easy to open- no levers to snap open. Very light- so light that the wind could flip, so may sometimes need to hang something on the center column to hold it down.

This an amazing tripod ! Super light, very small when folded, good height when unfolded.
There is one big con about this product: price. But once you make the decision, you won't regret.
Another thing that I am not sure, but I think that this tripod will require more attention (cleaning-wise) than my previous one. (Slik 300DX)

I love my big Gitzo, but wanted something lighter to use for hiking. The 1541 fills the bill perfectly. It fits on the side of my pack easily, yet offers enough support for my gear. Perfect.

We were hiking in UT and the tripod was the perfect weight and quality for our needs. I also love the fact that you can take it apart and wash it off after using it in dust, sand and water areas. Easy to use and set up and was more than stable enough to handle my 60D Canon with 17-40 ultra wide & 100 Macro lens.

I matched this tripod with the Gitzo magnesium ball head #1, and the combo is simply outstanding. Strong enough for my Rebel T2i + 100-400mm lens and yet light enough to stick in a backpack and not even notice the weight. Also collapses to fit in a carry-on or suitcase for travelling. Superior product.

Finally coughed up the dough for this tripod and only wished I did it sooner. Light weight and sturdy; I bought the BH-3 ball head and I am pleased as can be. I had been hauling around a nice but very heavy Bogen Manfrotto tripod with the BH-1 ball head and I was always arguing with myself " to bring or not to bring" No problem with this beauty it is light and opens up quickly. It fits in my carry on without disassembling and hangs off my back pack for easy reach...I don't even know it's there. Only complain is for the price I wished it could have come with a decent case.

I used the Gitzo GT 1541 tripod in the Sierras recently and it is light to carry. I found getting close to the ground plus using Canon's "live View" gave me amazing shots. Despite the cost, I would highly recommend it.

Bought this tripod from recommendations through Fred Miranda forums. The tripod is very stable for it's size. It is very easy to unlock and lock the legs. However if you extend all the legs, it starts to compromise on stability. Only extend the last section if you really need to.
