I am very pleased with my 430. After doing my own research i decided that i would be better off with the 430 over the 580 as my first external flash. I had a borrowed 580 for the first week of ownership with the 430 and did extensive comparison and dual flash experimentation. As well as two jobs; engagement photos and a dinner party.

The 430 is clearly not as powerful as the 580 and this is noticeable when bouncing light off a distant ceiling or in overly large rooms. (That is not say that the 430 is weak because it's not! It's just that the 580 is very powerful.) I was shooting a dinner party in a large stone mansion that was very dark. The photos with the 430 were a bit dimmer than those taken with the 580. The comparison photos were all using indirect lighting; i had the flashes pointed up to reflect the light off the ceiling. So if i were to do a lot of this type of shooting i would want the 580 but since i don't i cannot justify the expense. The only other significant difference between the two flashes for me is the wireless capabilities.

The 430 is a wireless slave only. But since i had a borrowed 580, which is capable of wireless slave and master, i had to try out the wireless capabilities. In less than 45 seconds i had figured out how to set the 430 as a slave and was taking two flash photo's within a minute after deciding to try it!

Also, i should note the durability of the 430. I neglected to lock it onto a tripod when using as a second flash and it took about a four foot tumble landing right on the head on ice and it continues to work just fine!

I also find the weight difference between the 430 & 580 to be surprising. The 580 is downright heavy. Even when i had both to use for a week i preferred the 430 most of the time just for the weight.

Like any speed light the 430 is prone to washing out when pointed directly forward if the subject is too close. I plan to try out some of the after market defusers for this. But for now, i generally point it up and use indirect lighting.

As many have said before me, the 430 is a great starter flash; powerful, easy to use and a bit less expensive than the 580. If/when the time comes that i require a 580 for certain tasks the 430 will probably remain the primary flash for general purpose. It is lighter and powerful enough for most situations. I should also mention that E-TTL II rocks! If you don't know what that is read about it before you buy any flash. The 430EX-II is a great flash that should not be underestimated.

This is definitely a flash for non-professional uses... If you're looking for a decent flash for a reasonable price, this is the flash for you. However, this flash will not cut it for professional purposes. The flash itself is very easy to use, and for the most part efficient for most purposes. The biggest downfall in this speedlite is its tendency to overheat. Even in the first few pages of the manual for the flash, it warns of overheating and flash degradation. It says "After 20 continuous flashes, allow a rest time of at LEAST 10 minutes." I can't really complain about anything other than what's already been listed, but it's definitely enough of a reason to deter me from buying this again.

Does not work for macro photography

Comments about Canon Speedlite 430EX II:

This flash works well, however it does not bend at less than a 90 degree angle, so it doesn't work for macro photography at all. If you want to use it for macro work, you have to use something else to make it work (I used a hydrostatic arm and shoe cord until I upgraded to the twin flash bracket) There's really no reason it doesn't bend at acute angles. How do they not think of this during their design process?

I was excited to find that this flash was smaller than my lumapro 160's a concern I had when choosing to get a higher end speedlite for event photography. the 430EX II is simple to use full fitted and the right size for a photographer on the go.

For my needs this flash does everything I need and more plus I have the Canon brand name and reliability. I especially like the fact I can set the 430 EX II speed light as a "Slave" unit that is triggered by the camera flash giving me greater flexibility with my lighting options.

Comments about Canon Speedlite 430EX II:

I have a wedding to shoot this spring. I was looking for my first flash. The 430EX II by Cannon was the obvious choice, for good reason. My concern was build quality between the 600EX and 430EX II. 600EX being the more robust and above my flash budget. The 430EX II meets all my needs and expectations. Excellent build quality. Same L series quality plastics we've come to expect from Cannon.

4 stars only because it's over priced. Works perfectly, but compared to my touchscreen Canon dslr it's attached to, it seems like over priced 1990's dinosaur tech. Again 100% reliability, good build quality, but the display and buttons remind me of a solar powered calculator I had in 1990. For $[$]plus I expected more

Comments about Canon Speedlite 430EX II:

I use it mainly indoor with Canon 6D and 24-105L lens. The pictures come out just great, all of them, no matter how I position the head of the flash, at the ceiling, or wall, or direct onto the object. It is also just great for outdoor use, when taking pictures of people at the sunset in the background.

I've bought a lot of items from B&H over the years so I knew I would be getting a quality, factory sealed product with full warranty at a good price. What I was not prepared for was the incredibly rapid delivery. I live in a state that borders B&H's home state but I ordered the product on the web at 2 PM and it was at my front to at 3 PM the next day - without a premium shipping fee. Nice job.

This is my first flash (on my 6d) and I could not be happier with my purchase! It was very easy to install and use. I bought this flash with a kit that included batteries, a charging station, and a diffuser. Every thing i needed in one kit. I love the results I get using this flash.

There is a lot more for me to learn about using this flash; however, it was quite easy to set up and begin using it in auto mode. The photographs are so much better than just using the internal flash of my Rebel 3ti. I'm very much an amateur photographer. B&H is a great place to order photographic equiment. They are trustworthy and orders are delivered promptly. Remember you will need batteries for the flash.

I used this flash along with the better beamer to photograph birds in the tropical areas of Panama. I have never taken photos of birds in low light before so I know nothing about flash photography. I was very successful so I am very happy.

What don't I like? Well, I hate having a big flash attachment but there is no other way to do it.
