The 77mm Ultraviolet UV(0) Haze HD (High Density) Filter from Hoya is a wise initial investment. It helps protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs.
This filter, with its hardened glass, has 4x the tensile strength of traditional filters of similar fabrication. This filter is also of great use in today's digital market where sensors are more sensitive to reflected light. Hoya incorporates special coatings that reduce these internal reflections and, thereby, promote a clearer, brighter and sharper image. The multi-coating used in this filter is made up of 8 layers on each side that promote 99.35% light transmission.
Hoya is one of the largest manufacturers of glass in the filter industry. In collaboration with its parent company, Tokina Optical, Hoya continues to strive to produce some of the best glass on the market. Currently, they hold 40% of the world's market for optical glass.
The advantage of most Hoya filters is that Hoya puts, at least, one layer of anti-reflective coating on each side of their glass. It is not bare glass. Even if the glass is not multi-coated, this kind of production tends to minimize flare and ghosting.

I have one of these on the front of each of my lenses. Really durable -- like armor. I've accidentally banged these across a variety of objects that I was certain would leave a mark, but all of them still look like new. It also cleans incredibly easily -- a gentle swipe with a microfiber cloth and everything comes right off. Coatings are so good you hardly know it is there. With the first one, the price was quite a shock. But it was so much better than any other UV filter I had ever owned that now I just automatically think of the price of any new lens as having to include one of these filters.

I use these filters on all my lenses as protection, but also they are easier to clean than the lens itself as they resist dirt and finger prints.The multicoating works well, there is no flare or ghosting and no stops lost in light transmission... what's not to like?For the price it is cheap protection from the inevitable knock. A few years ago I reacted to someone dropping something and my camera banged a wall smashing the filter. The lens was not harmed at all. I had a spare at home, but instead of putting the lens away and waiting, I just took the smashed filter off and carried on.... sods law a similar thing happened later in the day and with no filter to protect the lens, the front glass was scratched.... my impatience cost me dear!I now always have a spare in my camera bag. If my lenses are not 77mm, it get a step up conversion ring so I only have to carry 1xspare 77mm filter, 1x77mm ND and a couple of 77mm Polarizers in case I need more than 1 lens with a polarizer.These Hoyas are great, skip the Tiffens or Nikons, just get these.

I bought this filter in the first place for the protection of my 80-200, due to the HD extra strong glass. Fortunately I was not in the situation to test its hardness, but it saved the 70-200 of a friend of mine. On the other hand the UV treatement does its job too.

I had both, this HD filter and the cheaper Hoya HMC UV(C) filter. I bought another one of these HD filter because I found the cheaper one was more difficult to keep clean. My only complaint is that the front lens cap never sits quite as well on a lens with a filter, but this is not something unique to this filter, all the filters I have used are the same in that regard.
