If you are looking for a compact, secure travel pack that carries a great deal of equipment comfortably, this is it.

As a documentary photographer who travels extensively to foreign countries/regions, I have been in a continual search for a pack that would carry my essential photo gear and other items such as a writing pad, guide book, map, compass, water bottle, etc. and still be compact and have quick access to my equipment. The Flipside 400 fits the bill.

In its main compartment, it holds two large DSLR bodies - one with a 17-35mm and the other with an 85mm attached and ready for action. Additionally, the compartments carries a 105mm micro lens, a 50mm lens, two Speedlight flash guns with wireless transmitter and a small video camera.

In the ouside pouch, I carry a field cleaning kit, a multitool, a white balance disk, small filter stack, remote shutter release cord, writing pad/pen, map and compass.

In one of the two outside pockets, I carry a water bottle.

    Other pros are:

    * Opens from the inside, which can be done while it is belted around your waist. This feature also keeps your back clean since the outside of the pack lies on the ground when it is set down to open. Also, this feature keeps you equipment secure when you are in crowded areas since the pack has to be off of your back to be opened - a real plus in foreign locations.

    * It's compact size holds a lot of gear, but still remains compact on your back. The muted color scheme and design don't screem "expensive photo gear inside." The pack easily blends in with other urban packs so that you are not immediately marked as a photographer.

    * Rain fly - a big plus while abroad carrying thousands of dollars of photo gear. I've been caught in the open under pouring rain several times that wold have soaked my equipment to the bone if I hadn't this feature.

    * Lowepro quality - it's a solid pack.

Traveling abroad, it carries all of my equipment, is comfortable to wear, blends in well with other "commuter packs", and keeps my equipment secure when I'm in crowded locations such as a market or subway. It's integrated rain fly keeps my equipment dry and dust free. It's a great pack for my needs. I am confident that it will provide me with many valuable years of service on future trips and expeditions abroad.

I would definitely recommend it any photographer looking for a compact, discrete pack that will provide a high level of protection and security without significantly decrementing rapid access the camera gear.

I bought this bag because I wanted to be able to carry a Nikon D3 and D2(infrared) plus four lenses into the field.

It does this *just* - but only if I mount a *short* lens onto the bottom camera - either a 20mm or a 50mm. It's possible to mount a 28-70/2.8 on one camera and a 17-35/2.8 on the other and get them into the bag, but getting the lower camera back out requires a tyre iron and bad language.

Note my largest lens is a 28-70/2.8 - I don't normally carry an 80-200/2.8, and wouldn't try to get one into the main compartment of this bag.

Also note that the main compartment tapers and is a little too shallow at the bottom to fit a D2/D3 without pushing the padding outwards a little - no big deal.

The tripod carrier is not good - attaching a Manfrotto 190 leaves it hopelessly out-of-balance on your back.  It's possible to side-mount a tripod using the mesh pouch to carry the 'pods centre column and run the compression strap around the head - not sure if that'd work for anything larger than a 190 tho'.

The secondary compartment is a little too small for a full safety kit - I have to choose one of the following to leave behind: (EPIRB/PLB, GPS, phone), (waterproofs) or (food/snacks).

I'm looking to add a lens case or two for extra carrying space - I reckon that'll sort out these niggles and give me a versatile carrying system.

The back-access is a good idea and works very well. Overall this bag is working well for me - if only it had a few extra litres of carry space in the secondary compartment I'd be wrapped and give it five stars.

So overall this pint pot doesn't have quite enough room for my quart - if only the next size up weren't so much larger I'd go for that.

Comments about Flipside 400AW Backpack (Black):

I'm giving this backpack five stars even though I had to return it. The pack is very sturdy yet lightweight, is well designed, and had room for my Nikon D5300 with a Tamron 150-600mm lens attached (after making some adjustments to the interior dividers.) The name 'Flipside' name means that when wearing the pack with the hipbelt on you can shrug off the shoulder straps, rotate the pack from your back to your front, and access your gear from the back of the bag without putting it on the ground- brilliant!. There is a raincover tucked in a hidden pouch at the bottom, and water bottle pockets on both sides (why does anyone build a backpack without water bottle pockets?). The problem? At 6'2"", I'm too tall. Even after extending the shoulder straps as far as possible, the hipbelt sits too high on my waist to support any weight. It's really unfortunate, because in every other way the bag is perfect.

Comments about Flipside 400AW Backpack (Black):

I have used this backpack a few times since it arrived. I love how spacious it is and it is extremely comfortable to wear while shooting. It is lightweight so it doesn't add to the weight of my heavy gear. I like the functionality of the flipside option, but I do wish that the bag opened a little more fully, though I don't know that is a design option due to the purpose and functionality of the bag. So far I am more than pleased and plan to use it almost exclusively. I am a sling camera strap user, which is not really an option while shooting with a pack on your back, so I will have to adjust to that.

I am glad I chose this backpack by Lowepro. I have experienced using the bag during major sporting events and find it highly practical. It accommodated two 35mm SLR bodies and many, many lenses. The rear access makes it extremely convenient. In addition, it is very comfortable to wear when fully packed. Awesome purchase...

Comments about Flipside 400AW Backpack (Pine Green/Black):

I'm going to give 4 stars, but it's definitely barely 4. Many people complain about the access to the main compartment being on the side facing your back. This is actually why I chose the bag. In Europe, a pickpocket can get into your pack without you feeling a thing. This bag eliminates that threat. The green color doesn't scream camera bag. It holds as much stuff as my larger Lowepro bag and its size is kind of deceiving. It's well constructed. I can fit: 5DmkIII body, 70D body, 70-200 2.8L, 400 5.6L, and my 17-40 4.0L, with the usual accessories. I can't fit everything I own in it, but it holds a good selection of large lenses for a day trip. Shoulder straps could stand to be padded better. The pack doesn't have too many external straps and attachments, which is nice when you fly - less stuff to snag things on and it fits easily in the overhead. It actually fit under the seat on the last few 757's I've flown on. It's a decent bag but nothing to get crazy excited about.

I Was looking for a bag that would stand up to the harsh trails I take most of the time. And I found it with this bag. I had a flipside 300 previously and quickly out grew it. So I looked at its big brother the 400. It has more then enough space for all my camera gear and trail gear I need for a long day of hiking. And all the padding is great to have while wearing it for 8 or 9 hours of the day. All around a great bag for a even better price. The only issue is that they could sturdy up the tripod holster and strap some how but it does its job.

Comments about Flipside 400AW Backpack (Black):

I do frequent day hikes for nature photography. This bag works out to be a perfect size. A bigger bag would just be more weight and bulk. I generally carry my camera ready to shoot anyway. So that saves room inside. My equipment includes Canon 70-200, 100-400, 100 macro, 18-55 kit, flash and 1.4 extender. And all spare batts and cards. I've seen complaints about access while wearing. It has not been a problem for me. Not putting small items on the bottom solves this. Unfortunately if you have a full size tripod you'll have to find a different way to attach it. My Gitzo and RRS head is too tall to attach the way they show. As far as the chest strap that I've seen complaints, I don't find it ever necessary. Overall it's a great bag for day trips. I would recommend this to my friends.

Lowepro does a great job with design, materials and construction of their backpacks and the 400AW does everything a great backpack must do.

For how much weight I lug around, this is pretty darn comfortable!! If you're looking for a top notch backpack, this should be VERY high on your consideration list!! I tried the sling (for the weight I carry, one shoulder strap wasn't cutting it, I'm 6'1" and >200lbs). I Choose to haul a lot of gear, because I can go from landscape to street, to macro on a moment's notice. So, this backpack is a necessity for me! I couldn't find anything close to it's quality and capabilities for the price. Having the "flipside" keeps things more secure from theft. Pullout Rain hood, Pullout Tripod-monopod base holder a HUGE plus!!

Comments about Flipside 400AW Backpack (Black):

I like this bag. I have the Mini-Trekker and the one thing I hated with that bag was the location of the tripod and the prism of the Camera body.... It also didn't help that the Mini-Trekker is so shallow.

This bag is deeper and can carry a body with a grip. Not only that but because it opens from the inside (the side against me back, the bottom of the camera is positioned against the tripod. The carrying harness and waist belt are well padded and I have carried this bag hiking in the mountains without getting sore shoulders or hips. I was carrying a D610 with an Arca L bracket, 20mm 2.8d, 50mm 1.8g, 85mm 1.8g, 300mm 4.0d, TC14 II, batteries, Tripod, etc...

The swing around feature does work, But I am a little over weight and my belly gets in the way to some extent. Doing this with the tripod attached can be tricky and I recommend finding a rock or some object to put one leg up on so it can be used to support the bag.

            A couple of minor things.

As an intermediate bag, half way between a city and expedition bag it loses its purpose. The attachment points on the sides are so close to the water bottle holders that if I put something on them I can't then use the water bottle holder. The pull out tripod mounting tongue is not wide enough. While in a store looking at this and the 500AW neither would accept the width of 6 foot tripod folded up.

I own a Sirui M-3204x which folds over on itself and carries the head between its feet. To fit this in the tripod holder was impossible. So, as indicated I have a Mini-Trekker which never carries a tripod. This became the donor for a tripod foot transplant. With the wider foot of the Mini Trekker in place the 400AW can now carry the M3204x.

This backpack is awesome. A lot or room, very versatile and I like the way it opens from the backside. Sleek design and a lot of storage space. Very comfortable also. Highly recommended.

Comments about Flipside 400AW Backpack (Black):

This pack has ample space to fit most of the camera gear you would want to take on a hike. If it fit any more, it would probably be too heavy overall to wear for more than an hour or so (I'm pretty fit. Trust me, if this bag were bigger and you put more glass in this bag, you will be toast on a long hike). The side pockets that hold a water bottle without having to buy an extra bottle holder is nice. The tripod holder and rain cover work well are well-designed. The waist strap is padded and comfortable. I've taken it on several trips, and it has held up well. The big issue with this bag that knocks it down from 5 stars to 3 stars is the chest strap. With the bag loaded, you need a chest strap to help tie the bag securely to your body. When a bag is secured properly to your chest and torso, it makes it feel lighter and will give you long-lasting comfort, even if it is fully loaded and relatively heavy. This chest strap is a joke. It's not securely attached to the shoulder straps; it's only clipped on to a seam on the shoulder straps. The attachment clips give way when the bag is loaded making the chest strap useless. Inevitably, you will lose the chest straps altogether because they come off so easily. Mine are somewhere out in Yellowstone. Very annoying.

As the amount of gear one accumulates grows, a bigger bag for carrying it will eventually be needed. This bag is more than ample for carrying a LOT of gear. Nikon D7000 with grip, Nikon 55-300/f4.5-5.6, Sigma 17-50/f2.8, Sigma 70-200/f2.8 chargers, tripod, lens hoods, accessories, and still room for another camera body or a couple more lenses. I really like the fact that there's plenty of room to carry the camera body with the Sigma 70-200 attached. There's even room to tuck in the Black Rapid strap without removing it. There are nice mesh pockets on the side for more accessories, or for a water bottle or two when out hiking. There are even a couple loops across the top if you want to attach a light jacket to bring along. The bag is lightweight, and fits well. It hugs your back so it doesn't feel as if it's hanging way out behind you. I really like the Flipside design, as if you're in a crowded area, no one is getting into your gear. The tuck away rain cover is an added bonus. I can't think of anything wrong with this bag. If you're looking for a good bag to carry quite a bit of gear comfortably and safely, this is the one!

Comments about Flipside 400AW Backpack (Pine Green/Black):

This backpack is well built with lots of useable space. I have my Nikon D810 with a couple pro lenses and a couple prime lenses in it as well as all my various accessories. I don't find the access from the back to be very helpful except that it keeps the back area clean when you are setting it on dirt. It's a little bit annoying that the zippers don't quite open enough for the flap to stay open on its own so it flops shut and makes the lenses at the bottom of the pack a little annoying to get in and out. Also the tripod strap doesn't do a very good job of keeping your tripod strapped on tight. Other than that the pack is pretty good and is comfortable to carry even with several heavy lenses.

I had been using and older and now discontinued LowePro Mini Treckker to carry my gear when flying, around town etc. Needed to replace and settled on the Flipside 400. Nice bag, roughly simmilar to the Mini Treckker in size. Overall very nice. Not going to give it 5 stars because from a suspension standpoint these LowePro bags do not allow enough customization to allow form fitting comfort for long hikes etc.

Comments about Flipside 400AW Backpack (Black):

This camera pack is well made and has space for one or two camera bodies plus several lenses, as advertised. It is quite comfortable for the weight it might carry. But be very careful about just how large your pack is because it can get quite heavy when filled, especially after several miles in the mountains. The inside zipper access to the main compartment, although perhaps secure in a crowded subway, is very inconvenient otherwise. No, you can't easily swing it around using the waist belt while on the trail, as advertised. You have to take it off and fight the awkward zippers. Had I know this I certainly would have purchased another design camera pack with outside zipper access.
