If you are looking for a compact, secure travel pack that carries a great deal of equipment comfortably, this is it.

As a documentary photographer who travels extensively to foreign countries/regions, I have been in a continual search for a pack that would carry my essential photo gear and other items such as a writing pad, guide book, map, compass, water bottle, etc. and still be compact and have quick access to my equipment. The Flipside 400 fits the bill.

In its main compartment, it holds two large DSLR bodies - one with a 17-35mm and the other with an 85mm attached and ready for action. Additionally, the compartments carries a 105mm micro lens, a 50mm lens, two Speedlight flash guns with wireless transmitter and a small video camera.

In the ouside pouch, I carry a field cleaning kit, a multitool, a white balance disk, small filter stack, remote shutter release cord, writing pad/pen, map and compass.

In one of the two outside pockets, I carry a water bottle.

    Other pros are:

    * Opens from the inside, which can be done while it is belted around your waist. This feature also keeps your back clean since the outside of the pack lies on the ground when it is set down to open. Also, this feature keeps you equipment secure when you are in crowded areas since the pack has to be off of your back to be opened - a real plus in foreign locations.

    * It's compact size holds a lot of gear, but still remains compact on your back. The muted color scheme and design don't screem "expensive photo gear inside." The pack easily blends in with other urban packs so that you are not immediately marked as a photographer.

    * Rain fly - a big plus while abroad carrying thousands of dollars of photo gear. I've been caught in the open under pouring rain several times that wold have soaked my equipment to the bone if I hadn't this feature.

    * Lowepro quality - it's a solid pack.

Traveling abroad, it carries all of my equipment, is comfortable to wear, blends in well with other "commuter packs", and keeps my equipment secure when I'm in crowded locations such as a market or subway. It's integrated rain fly keeps my equipment dry and dust free. It's a great pack for my needs. I am confident that it will provide me with many valuable years of service on future trips and expeditions abroad.

I would definitely recommend it any photographer looking for a compact, discrete pack that will provide a high level of protection and security without significantly decrementing rapid access the camera gear.

I bought this bag because I wanted to be able to carry a Nikon D3 and D2(infrared) plus four lenses into the field.

It does this *just* - but only if I mount a *short* lens onto the bottom camera - either a 20mm or a 50mm. It's possible to mount a 28-70/2.8 on one camera and a 17-35/2.8 on the other and get them into the bag, but getting the lower camera back out requires a tyre iron and bad language.

Note my largest lens is a 28-70/2.8 - I don't normally carry an 80-200/2.8, and wouldn't try to get one into the main compartment of this bag.

Also note that the main compartment tapers and is a little too shallow at the bottom to fit a D2/D3 without pushing the padding outwards a little - no big deal.

The tripod carrier is not good - attaching a Manfrotto 190 leaves it hopelessly out-of-balance on your back.  It's possible to side-mount a tripod using the mesh pouch to carry the 'pods centre column and run the compression strap around the head - not sure if that'd work for anything larger than a 190 tho'.

The secondary compartment is a little too small for a full safety kit - I have to choose one of the following to leave behind: (EPIRB/PLB, GPS, phone), (waterproofs) or (food/snacks).

I'm looking to add a lens case or two for extra carrying space - I reckon that'll sort out these niggles and give me a versatile carrying system.

The back-access is a good idea and works very well. Overall this bag is working well for me - if only it had a few extra litres of carry space in the secondary compartment I'd be wrapped and give it five stars.

So overall this pint pot doesn't have quite enough room for my quart - if only the next size up weren't so much larger I'd go for that.

Comments about Flipside 400AW Backpack (Black):

I bought this to carry my DSLR and lenses, with extra space for a small video camera and a point-and-shoot camera.

The backpack holds all of the gear, and is adjustable to fit most of the lenses securely, with extra pockets for memory cards, filters, spare batteries and camera manuals.

The big reason for getting the larger backpack was to hold the Tamron 150-600mm lens. Although it fits, when the lens hood is reversed over the end of the lens, it is a tight squeeze. A slightly larger backpack may work better.

It holds what I bought it for: a DSLR, 50mm, 20-140mm, 150-600mm lenses, a point-and-shoot and a video camera all fit as expected, but if I add any more lenses or an external flash, I'll need to upgrade.d

If you have large lenses, you may want to consider going with a larger backpack.

When I do a remote photo shoot I like to get all my electronics in a backpack. This way I can make one trip with all my lightstands and tripods in another bag. This is nice and big and just as important, is very secure on your back. Important feature when you have a lot of money in your gear.

Comments about Flipside 400AW Backpack (Black):

This is my third Lowepro bag / pack. Bought this to accommodate my new 150-600 tamron lens. That lens, my Nikon d600, and two other lenses + accessories fit perfectly. Spent a week lugging it around southern Florida without major issues.

My only complaint is that the bag is a little short so with the hip belt fastened the shoulder straps have to be loosened so much such that the chest strap is at its lowest attachment. Unfortunately there is nothing keeping it in its track and it kept sliding off.

Comments about Flipside 400AW Backpack (Black):

This is a well made bag. I am moving up from the AW Runner 200 because my gear load has increased. This new bag now accomadates my D800, 4 lenses and assorted other goodies and still has room to grow. As this is a back opening bag if you keep the waist straps clipped together as I often do to keep them out of the way, it does thend to restrict access to the lower inside of the bag. It's not a big deal but wortht mentioning. Like any other piece of new gear it takes a while living with it to really get the most out of it.

Comments about Flipside 400AW Backpack (Black):

The Lowepro Flipside 400AW backpack is a welcome relief to my right shoulder which used to take the brunt of weight while carrying around a Nikon body and several heavy lenses in a stadard shoulder bag. I can go all day without feeling the weight when it is distribued equally on both sides. This backpack has ample room for all by gear including an old 80-200 AF-S zoom with a 77mm front end. I've loaded it up with everything I need and there is still space for extras. So far, I cannot think of any downsides except that it needs to come off the shoulders to gain access, but that is true of any backpack. I plan to keep and use this for many years to come.

I had a flipside 300 for about 5 years, the breast strap buckle broke during the first year but other than that the 300 faired ok, it probably has about a year of survivable use left.I have only used the 400 several times to date, it has a larger capacity than the 300. The 300 could accommodate a 5.6f 400mm lens attached to a camera and a 70-200 zoom along side but that was very tight and probably put excessive pressure on the zipper. If you sweat a lot, i.e. hiking or biking moisture will wick inside, if hiking or biking I would put my lenses and cameras in a plastic bag. These bags are well designed, but the materials could be a little better quality, i.e. the buckle that broke could not easily be replaced as it was stitched into the pack and the breast strap seems to help reduce lower back pain.

It is a nice snug fit and the materials are very high quality. I love how the inside is very transformable. When fully loaded and put on, the pack doesn't feel too heavy, as it balances the weight very well. Definitely recommend for day trips, hikes, the city, etc. Might not be as good for very long excursions. Glad I bought it!

I've had this bag for about a year now. The only drawback for me is that the zipper does not go all the way to the bottom. Accessing anything at the very bottom could be easier.

Definitely the bag I need, its a little big but the comfort factor is the winner here. I love the tripod holder and it is perfect for hikes when you have more than just a camera and lens. A plus yo!

This pack is one of the best I have 2 of these because they're perf for day trips one for wedding gear and one for nature and sports. The nature back I have a sigma 150-500, a canon 70-200f4 and a 24-125 along with a 6D the other has 3 flashes and some radio gear along with 4 lens and 2 bodies. The bags are deceptively big. Over all great bags and comfortable.

I'm giving this backpack five stars even though I had to return it. The pack is very sturdy yet lightweight, is well designed, and had room for my Nikon D5300 with a Tamron 150-600mm lens attached (after making some adjustments to the interior dividers.) The name 'Flipside' name means that when wearing the pack with the hipbelt on you can shrug off the shoulder straps, rotate the pack from your back to your front, and access your gear from the back of the bag without putting it on the ground- brilliant!. There is a raincover tucked in a hidden pouch at the bottom, and water bottle pockets on both sides (why does anyone build a backpack without water bottle pockets?). The problem? At 6'2"", I'm too tall. Even after extending the shoulder straps as far as possible, the hipbelt sits too high on my waist to support any weight. It's really unfortunate, because in every other way the bag is perfect.

Has just the right amount if space. I can fit 2 camera bodys, 3 lenses and more. I really live that the zipper to open the bag is against my back when on so no one can unzip my stuff.. Thank you Lowepro for such a great idea!!

I have used this backpack a few times since it arrived. I love how spacious it is and it is extremely comfortable to wear while shooting. It is lightweight so it doesn't add to the weight of my heavy gear. I like the functionality of the flipside option, but I do wish that the bag opened a little more fully, though I don't know that is a design option due to the purpose and functionality of the bag. So far I am more than pleased and plan to use it almost exclusively. I am a sling camera strap user, which is not really an option while shooting with a pack on your back, so I will have to adjust to that.

I am glad I chose this backpack by Lowepro. I have experienced using the bag during major sporting events and find it highly practical. It accommodated two 35mm SLR bodies and many, many lenses. The rear access makes it extremely convenient. In addition, it is very comfortable to wear when fully packed. Awesome purchase...
