This light is convenient because it uses the special mini-accessory shoe provided on the Canon HFG10. It draws power from the camcorder battery, making it small an light. You can toss it into your gear bag and always have it without having to worry about carrying yet another battery and charger.

It is a small, 5 watt light however. This makes it good for filling it a face when shooting a backlit subject, or providing some illumination in dark environments. It is not a replacement for studio lights! If you want to light objects that are far away, or fill an entire room, it is simply too small. Use it as it was intended, and you will be happy.

The video light that I received came in packaging labeled VL-5 by Canon but it does not look like the picture and it clearly states on the Canon packaging this:
    Main Specifications
    - Bulb: 5.7 V/3 W- Weight: Approx. 43g - Power Consumption: 3.3 W

So, what I received is labeled as a Canon VL-5, doesn't look like the picture on any websites I visit, including B & H and clearly states it is 3 W instead of 5 W. I'm not happy with the discrepancies.

Not sure what I think of how it performs either. I need to put on my TV screen to check it out further. This was a gift I'd requested to go with my M30 video camera.

I was expecting this light to be brighter for the cost. It's not every as bright as a flash light.

It can basically light up one face in the dark.

I got this for my Canon HF-G10 camcorder. It's bright and does the job of lighting the subject, although it's too bright and blinded my subjects and it was very hot. Not sure I'd recommend it.

I am a Canon Product lover, but the VL-5 video light was one that did not get it for me. it did not provide much more light then the light that is built into the camera. plus, when you did get to close to people with it, it was to bright for their eyes, mainly because it was more direct then the built in one. sorry, but was not for me.

Comments about Canon VL-5 On-Camera 5 Watt Video Light:

I was hoping for a powerful lighting system that could help illuminate video subjects during a shoot. What this light does is give you a way to shoot video in the dark, and in very poorly lit rooms. However, keep in mind this will NOT help you if you're in a room with poor lighting. If it's not dark or near dark and you want to improve the lighting, you'll need something else. This one will not have any impact on that scenario.

This 5 watt light takes all the guess work out of filming. The auto mode on the light kicks on when there is not enough natural light to achieve brilliant picture quality. No more grainy under illuminated home videos. Easy to attach and doesn't drain the camera battery as quickly as past lights I've used.

Comments about Canon VL-5 On-Camera 5 Watt Video Light:

Surprisingly powerful. Well made, as is the case with all Canon products. Does get quite hot and you will need to carry a backup battery with you as this drains power quickly. A bit pricey, but probably worth it.

I use it w/ vixia HF10, in low light conditions it has resoved the grainy appearance for subjects in close proximity. Lightweight, easy to use!

Works well. No shadows appear behind the lit subjects. Would be a bit better if it light just a bit wider. When at full wide angle edges are a bit under lit.
